My standard environment is lightdm + dwm. Now I've installed KDE because some
apps I like seem to be somewhat better integrated, but when I go back to dwm
(started via .xsession) I'm still stuck with the KDE cursors from (I believe)
the "breeze" theme which I don't like in this minimalistic environment.

I don't mind the breeze cursors when using KDE, but how can I switch back to
the standard cursor set when I start a dwm session?

I tried "xsetroot -cursor_name X_cursor" but it doesn't do anything.

Do you have dir ~/.icons ?

If so, see if ~/.icons/default is linked to something.
I have it linked to PolarCursorTheme and I get
those cursors in fvwm2. So make note, remove link
~/.icons/default and restart.

I'm using fvwm3.
According to my notes I got different and bigger pointers
by creating ~/.config/kcminputrc.

Mine contains:

[Mouse]
cursorSize=64
cursorTheme=Adwaita
