There are gated moderated hierarchies from Fidonet. I'm going to guess
that's what it is, that someone misconfigured something so it couldn't
use the fido7 gateway.

No, the group I saw in the log was odessa.news, no direct relation to
Fidonet.

Well, short of looking at the article's headers, I couldn't possibly
guess. Is there a way to set up a News server for pseudo newsgroup, say
control.unwanted, to store sample unwanted articles that one might review
for curiousity's sake?

We'll have to assume it's from a local hierarchy somewhere that leaked.
