I write again only to conffirm now Eudora works very well.
In your opinion, disabling that encrypted web
scanning, I will get some safety issues?
Thank you!

I really don't know, but frankly if switching it off enables Eudora to work properly, and you still want to carry on using Eudora, leave it switched off!
I would very much doubt that it would open up a big security hole in your system, it's very common for some facilities on security software to cause issues with some other software and have to be disabled. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Note that Eudora uses a two-step system for inbound email. The first
step saves the message in the spool directory. THEN the spooled messages
are processed into the IN box (or filtered to other boxes).

As a result, one seldom needs to have virus checkers checking the
network traffic -- they only need to check the spooled file WHEN Eudora
starts processing it into a mailbox.

I would just like to inform you that a very strange thing has just
happened to me.
Eudora hasn't downloaded one message that is in my account on the web.
It is not in a Junk folder.
I had to go online to be able to read mymessage that Eudora didn't
download.
The same email was sent to ....@gmail.com and ....@tin.it
I didn't get both.
Such a thing had never happened to me.

I've never had that happen to me either, but I have heard of it happening occasionally to other people.
Unfortunately I don't think the cause was ever determined.
I would think it's possible that the message won't work with the POP message retrieval system for some reason (assuming that's what you're using) rather than an actual problem in Eudora. No other POP e-mail client would retrieve it either if that were the case.
Is there anything odd at all about the message? Is it just plain text or does it contain HTML and/or embedded images?

It's a message youtube sent me. Nothing in particular. But the
strangest thing is that the other Eudora I have in another laptop
managed to download it. It is incredible but true.

That is strange, I've had loads of e-mails from YouTube over the years, and they've always been delivered fine.
We'll probably never know, but it could have been something with had nothing to do with Eudora at all.

The names of my Eudora 7.1 mailboxes and folders have special
characters. Would they get corrupted in an automatic port to Pandora?

I vaguely recall hitting a problem like this years ago. It may have
been from an earlier version of Eudora to a later version - or
something like that. Anyway it didn't go entirely smoothly and I recall
some names gave trouble.

Does a migration to Pandora go smoother than that?

Why don't you try HERMES Mail? We have a real continuation of Eudora for Windows running on a modern PC; if you have been following our story, we have had to change the name but we are running the historic Eudora 7.1 code base, improved to work with Unicode and modern OpenSSL. This is not a re-creation, but a real revival of QUALCOMM Eudora.

We did a few little fundraisers before Covid hit, and that bought us time to get running, but until now our finances have been essentially a blank slate. The software is now, for all intents and purposes, complete. This time, we have a FIRM commitment to release to our testers on 1 AUGUST of THIS YEAR!

As proof positive that we have a product to release, please see our screenshots: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aLvQTdHW3x01RJG52oPaw-ujni09XyhC/view?usp=sharing and https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vmTxCRbEPdhAPOHJzMrZ5ovtimvDkEFB/view?usp=sharing

If you wish to become a tester and be among the first to get access to this product, please chip in here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/hermes-mail-8-0-the-final-stretch#/ Throw in a dollar, ten, or a hundred; any amount will get you access when we release in August.

In view of our proven success in this area (albeit delayed), we're aiming for five thousand Canadian dollars this time. That'll allow us to continue developing the Windows version (which will also run on Linux), and begin development on HERMES Mail for Mac.

In my opinion, you should migrate from Eudora to MS Outlook. It is easy, updated, feature rich and easily available for everyone. Supports multiple file types and it is extremely simple to migrate Eudora to MS Outlook. You only need a reliable tool to read Eudora mailboxes and one such solution is https://www.magustools.com/mbox-conversion/pst.php

Question: is MS Outlook on my computer, storing my files "here"?
Or is my email being stored on Microsoft's computer?

Pandora http://www.drivehq.com/web/brana/pandora.htm (small cost for
major upgrades and initial version if one wants to unlock all features --
demo only supports one personality/server) is a work-alike for Eudora
(there are some minor things that behave differently).

It has capability to directly import personalities, mailboxes, etc.
from Eudora -- no conversion tool required.

My experience with Outlook is that it is focused on corporate mail
structure, wherein replies use top-posting, with quoted material treated as
a "courtesy copy". I don't think I ever managed to get it to work with
interspersed and/or bottom posting, which is most common for general email.

Thanks.

I may migrate - some day. But for now, Eudora works.

What do you think about the new Eudora 8.0.0 beta-9 announced at https://eudora.en.softonic.com/
Did anyone do a test?

Eudora 8 is a fake. It's just the same Thunderbird that has been redressed with Eudora clothes. Nothing new.

I've used Outlook in the past and it is the biggest piece of... let's just say it's not for me. ;)

Mostly it's problem is being Microsoft, they want to own you, and never really tell you what they are doing. Eudora may be a piece of crap as well, but it's *my* piece of crap that I *know* and love... well love/hate.

I really am ready for an update. Something has happened over the last year that many emails won't really show. I have to open them in the browser. The weird thing is, I thought it was new emails that use modern HTML features, but even older emails that used to display in Eudora have to be opened in the browser as if Eudora took at step backwards.

Anyone know the current status of Hermes? I've been tired of waiting for a couple of years now. Mostly it bugs me that there isn't more reporting of what needs to be done and where the project is currently. Sometimes I wonder if Hermes is about anything more than beer money. Anyone seen a real sign of life? Above, Theodore said they would be shipping to "testers" in August. I think we are past that point, no?

> > This time, we have a FIRM commitment to release to our testers on 1 AUGUST of THIS YEAR!

My real problem is, I have no way to test a new tool, without risking the continuity of my email archives. I guess I would need to set up something where I continue to use Eudora as usual, and run Hermes without deleting any email from the server. So Hermes could read all my email all the time, then I run Eudora once in a while to download the emails and remove them from the server. Or I could do it the other way around and send my replies from Hermes. Either way, very messy.

If you really like Eudora 7.1 (I've been using it since the early 90s) There are new files that you can use to update it to modern security features. Google "Hermes Project" and download the .zip file from Sourceforge, follow the instructions and Voila. Your Eudora is good for at least a couple more years.

Hello Dave, I see your post is from a couple of years ago, but seems you went through the same problem I encountered right now.
I am another "die hard" eudora user, and have the TLS v1.2 connection problem - can't connect to the server. I tried to copy Herm SSL files but it didn't work for me. Could you post any tips? May be I am missing something.
Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Barbara, sorry for the delay in replying.
How did you apply the Hermes update, did you use the full installer or the zip file which just contains the updated files?
If the latter, as you seem to be saying, you should have replaced the libeay32.dll, QCSSL.dll, ssleay32.dll, and rootcerts.p7b files in the Eudora program files folder with the versions in the zip file. Did you also extract the vcredist.exe file and run it? It contains a system update which you may need. If you just get an error message when you run it, just close it. It means that the update is already installed.
HTH. Dave.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for your reply!
I extracted the files and run the vcredist, but it says it's already installed on my computer, and that I should uninstall the existing one first. I am not sure if it's needed.
I copied the files you listed above into the eudora folder, and still does not work.
I will contact my hosting company again tomorrow, but they were no help last three times I called them (they don't even understand why would anyone want to keep their mail client/program). Basically, I think it has to do with SSL/TLS connection authentication, as the TLS1.2 is the new current one?
I know it's too hard for you to guess what's wrong with someone's set up, but the conflict came upon me so suddenly, I am still in shock and don't know where to turn.
Thanks again, Barbara.

Just to confirm, you do have 'Required, Alternate Port' selected in 'Secure Sockets' for send and receive on the persona you're using?
What happens if you click the 'Last SSL Info' button after trying to receive or send? Does it say there was a connection made, and if there was, what was the SSL version used?

I didn't have "required, Alternate port" checked, but it doesn't work either. The last SSL is blank. It says "I have never done any SSL negotiation with any personality since last time I started Eudora" This box used to be grayed out (sort of) but after I started changing the files from Hermes, I must have wiped it out.

Rather than just saying, "it doesn't work", it can be important to provide the details of the error message, sometimes...

One time I moved my domain to a new hosting provider and they gave conflicting information on how to set up the email accounts in Eudora. They actually gave zero advice for Eudora, but generically, they told me how to set up for SMTP3 or whatever the protocol is that isn't IMAP. The bottom line was, I kept focusing on the meaning of the rather generic error message, when the real problem was, the password was wrong. I think someone here suggested that I have Eudora forget the password for this account, which would prompt for a new one on the next email access. Sure enough, that did the trick and I was back on the air.

In the menus, Special, Forget Passwords. It's a bit like falling back to defragging your hard drive, but it's easy enough to try.
