I'm back in Mageia 8. I couldn't use Mageia 8 Alpha1. I have difficulty
installing some programs. One of them is Opera. It is not in the Mageia
repositories and I didn't find a generic pack to Linux.

The last version of opera packaged for Mageia was 12.16 for Mageia 4, the
version I use for email, usenet, mailing lists, and usenet, and limited
browsing.

The current opera is not packaged for Mageia as the overhead of adding another
chromium based browser isn't worth the work to maintain.

For the current version there's an rpm available
https://download5.operacdn.com/pub/opera/desktop/94.0.4606.38/linux/opera-stable_94.0.4606.38_amd64.rpm

I've tested installing it using urpmi ./opera*.rpm on both m8 and m9 installs
and the browser is working.

Go to https://www.opera.com/download

Scroll down to Opera Browser for Linux

Go across to Prefer another package? RPM / SNAP . Click on RPM.

Opera-stable....rpm should start downloading.

Cheers!

The Opera browser has the differential of having a VPN already
configured. Most of the time I use Brave. Brave is also not packaged
for Mageia but there is an AppImage package for it.

Recently, I could find no package of Opera that Mageia could install. I
simply gave up.

Today I successfully installed Opera for Linux 94.0.4606.38, RPM from
Opera.com.

During installation RPM shows a message of unsigned packages, just
ignore that and click ok, then everything works fine.

Do not use the default download offer of the deb. package, but go to the
> Downloads section > For Computers > Opera > Opera Browser for Linux.
(there are also downloads for Windows, Mac, Android, Chromebook etc.)

Marc.

Worth knowing. The warning about "unsigned messages" is a security
check, but since you downloaded from the official Opera site, you should
have nothing to worry about. The default .deb package can be converted
to a RPM with alien, but having an RPM created by Opera themselves is
better. Ubuntu and its derivatives seem to be the most popular distros,
so it seems odd that the RPM package was selected as the preferred format.
