I have been using Angry IP scanner for a number of years with any problems.
Very recently I upgraded my Linux Mint to 21.1, and now when I try to
run the said program et a popup message saying I need to have
Java/OpenJDK11+ to run the program.

My Java version:
rob@rob-Z97:~$ java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_352"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_352-8u352-ga-1~22.04-b08)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.352-b08, mixed mode)

If I have OpenJDK Build 25, surely the said program should run, butb it
doesn't

You probably already know this, but I'm pretty sure you can download
Oracle's version of the Java runtime. I did it once upon a time.

I realize this report may not be helpful, but...

I booted a live LM 21.1 Cinn, dl/ed the ipscan 3.9.0 deb from the
angryIP scanner site, checked my default openjdk w/ java -version which
said 11.0.17 date 22-10-18 and then used GDebi to install the .deb which
install completed w/o problems. Then I ran the graphical Angry IP
Scanner from the menu where it was in the Internet section. It ran fine.

So what is my openJDK version as I am a bit confused by the numbers given
Is it Version 1.8 or 25.352

java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_352"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_352-8u352-ga-1~22.04-b08)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.352-b08, mixed mode)

Yours is 1.8, not 11.

Our java version reports are not identical, what I posted before was not
pasted like this one is:

$ java -version
openjdk version "11.0.17" 2022-10-18
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.17+8-post-Ubuntu-1ubuntu222.04)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.17+8-post-Ubuntu-1ubuntu222.04,
mixed mode, sharing)

If I go into the live Synaptic and search for openjdk, I see one of the
results which is installed is called openjdk-11-jre and that looks like
what you should/could install from your repo/s.

In the past, I've read articles which like Oracle's 'better' but I'm
just saying what is installed by default in the live LM 21.1 Cinn (and
in the repo/s).

Strange as I downloaded openjdk as per:
sudo apt-get update && apt-get remove openjdk*

I would have thought it should be version 11 or more!!

In synaptic it is saying that default jdk installed version is 11.0.17,
so I reinstalled it and tried Angry IP scanner again. No, it is still
saying I need openJDK 11

I think it is kinda wacky that the/your server vm build is reported to
be such a high v. My server vm matches my runtimeenvironment v.

I think there are two problems here:

- your openjdk is too old; it should be 11.0.7
- your 'server VM' (openjdk) is 'outawhack', it should have come from
the same openjdk build 11.0.7

I have no clue as to how the server VM got to be that way; and I also
have no clue as to what is the/your problem w/ removing the 'bad'/wrong
openjdk and installing the correct openjdk from the repo/s.

In my case, I didn't have to do any of that; I had the correct openjdk
version, build, and serverVM from the live gitgo default.

So, somehow your 'pre-existing condition' (update or upgrade) is getting
in the way of doing/getting the right thing, openjdk-wise.

I don't know this scanner's feature set or what you need specifically,
but i can't imagine how it's any better than nmap. It may even be using
nmap for scanning. There are some GUI interfaces for nmap available. And
no java dependencies.

Running

Make sure you have at least Java 11 or OpenJDK installed - check your distribution.

Last version with Java 8 support was 3.7.6 <=== AngryIP version

*******

Usually, stuff like this is protected with wrappers.

#!/bin/sh
java=$JAVA_HOME/bin/java
[ ! -e $java ] && java=java
$java --add-opens java.base/java.net=ALL-UNNAMED -jar /usr/lib*/ipscan/ipscan*.jar "$@"
[ $? != 0 ] && notify-send "You need Java/OpenJDK 11+ to run ipscan"

There are probably several situations where that error message comes back.

For example, let us say that $JAVA_HOME does not point to the correct install point.
That might break the thing. It could be, you do have a correct Java
installed, but nothing corrected the $JAVA_HOME.

It's not using your PATH variable to sniff for the thing.
It is cheating.

And the script above, is about the only barrier to success in there :-)
It's got "Guilty yer Honour" written all over it.

In synaptic it said that I have also got version 1.11.72, so I removed
it it., but I still get this:

rob@rob-Z97:~$ java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_352"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_352-8u352-ga-1~22.04-b08)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.352-b08, mixed mode)

Is there a sure fire way of removing openjdk1.8

I also see that there is also openjdk17 as well as openjdk11

Thanks

In a ubuntu machine the java version shows exactly the same is in my
Mint machine.
In my other ubuntu machine Java was not installed so I installed
openjdj11, and that is what it shows by usion java -version.

When I did the same in the Mint machine , it said that version 11 was
already installed!!!

Are you sure you don't have another installation of Java earlier on your
path, that's perhaps not managed by apt/synaptic? What does `which
java` show?

It may also be informative to see what you get from:
update-alternatives --display java
and
apt list --installed 'openjdk*'

My mint 20.x (so versions might be a bit different from yours) gives:

$ which java
/usr/bin/java

$ update-alternatives --display java
java - auto mode
link best version is /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java
link currently points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java
link java is /usr/bin/java

The program uses a script that uses $JAVA_HOME
to find the "version" of java. If that is pointed
to the wrong place, you're never going to get it
working at this rate.

whywhywhy...

A puzzlement is, -- how did it get/come to be that somehow his 'route'
of an update/upgrade to his pre-existing install became 'incompatible'
w/ the angryip's java?

That is, 'outofthebox' a fresh LM 21.1 + angryip (from the site's .deb)
is NOT incompatible; works just fine.

But, his java situation somehow got to be in a condition that was not
compatible and also not 'simply' remediable by ordinary means to us mortals.

What sets $JAVA_HOME ?

What if the variable isn't even set ?

Is this a variable that every installer sets ?

In my experimental live LM 21.1 Cinn, none of the instructions I've
found for 'finding' $JAVA_HOME are giving me any answers; but I know it
must be set/working because when I install the angryip .deb from its
site, then it works properly.

In the live LM 21.1, there is no 'need' to install or configure the
openjdk first because it is installed by default as indicated earlier.

In a lengthy 2017 discussion of how to find java_home, (only) one person
said that it had been deprecated in linux and was no longer used, which
is consistent w/ my experience so far.

I'm sure a bunch of stuff can set vars like $JAVA_HOME.
But you can check out current environment variable with commands like:

env | less
set | less

env | less gives my jave path;

JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/

set | less doesn't show me anything regarding to java, unless I didn't
look closely enough

What I can't understand is why I seem to have different java / jdk
version on my mint desktop. Synaptic says I have open JDK11 , but when I
use: java -version, it says I have

rob@rob-Z97:~$ java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_352"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_352-8u352-ga-1~22.04-b08)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.352-b08, mixed mode)

Then the JAVA_HOME says I have java 8-openjdk

Confused I will be!!
