What's the story on running Alpine on apple hardware? Specifically
on an M1 MacBook Air.

On my x86 Macbook, I clone the git repository, configure it like this

./configure --enable-from-encoding --with-local-password-cache-method

then type make and it works. Try it. I'm not aware of anything that
would depend on an x86 architecture.
