Well, a "sudo apt-get install mpage" said that nothing was found.

Is there a repository or update I need to add/do?

I've never had it fail over all these years.

I did see an mpage rpm for centos, but I don't think that there's a "yum"
for ubuntu/mint.

Two tactics suggest themselves. Go to the Mint page.
Or go to Distrowatch and download their latest version.

Looks like mpage was removed from Debian a few years ago and as Mate is
based on Debian it's gone from there too.

You could convert the rpm to deb with alien if that's in Mate. It might
still depend on things not in your system but mpage doesn't seem to have
many dependencies.

Or build mpage from source. Or look for another tool, a2ps or enscript
might do what you need.

Just a wild guess. Reading the man page (not mpage ;-)
<https://linux.die.net/man/1/mpage>:

| mpage reads plain text files or PostScript documents and prints them
| on a PostScript printer with the text reduced in size so that several
| pages appear on one sheet of paper.

my guess is a2ps might otherwise do a similar job:

| DESCRIPTION
| | Convert FILE(s) or standard input to PostScript. By default, the output
| is sent to the default printer. An output file may be specified with
| -o.

It also knows about the "size" option. a2ps should be available in any
Linux distribution. No need to install or convert external packages.

Based on the description "several pages appear on one sheet of paper",
I'd suggest psnup as an alternative. It's part of the psutils package
in Debian (and derivatives).

Haven't used it in eons, but I remember the suggested a2ps can do this
too.

Also have psnup installed. Seems also to be able to do the job.

Anyway (because I have both installed and never use sources out of the
package manager (in Debian)), both a2ps and psnup seem to be able to do
what the OT asks for.

Thank-you for these links.
I'm embarrassed that I don't know what to do manually with the tar.xz
files...I'll read up on it and see if I can do it before I come crawling
back.

The instructions are probably there in it.

Thank-you. I'll read up on a2ps. I simply want my list of phone number to
come out on 1 page instead of two or three. mpage -2 | lpr was all I needed
to do. Although now I'll probably need 'mpage -4 | lpr'

I'll look at a2ps...

'pr' can make columns, but mpage made nicely smaller fonts.

Ah! This looks like it will do the trick, looking at the man page. I'll go
install psutils......

Thanks, everybody. I'm sure this will do the trick.
Luckily it's a simple problem.

You can dig in the man pages, google, and then write it down in a
personal file of notes for fast access next time :-)

OR, you can use a file browser like Midnight Commander (mc). It works
inside a terminal, it is actually text mode, but nevertheless it is the
most powerful of all filebrowser, except that it doesn't do graphics.

Just hit enter on the archive.tar.xz file, and it will automatically
decompress (in /tmp) and let you browse it, view inside files, or copy
it all or partially to anywhere else.

It also lets you create tar.xz and other variants.

That's interesting. I never used MC and almost never ranger because I
find the command line faster. BUT, browsing inside archives file is a
very interesting feature. Thanks.
