It's free to all so I picked it up, also since it's GoG. But boy are you right about that genre. I've been surprised
before though.

I hate freebies I cannot benefit from because, of course, I already
have the game. Darn you, my over-eager purchasing decisions! Then
again, with this game I might not be so upset.

Although it is a well-regarded adventure game in some circles, it's
not one I particularly enjoyed. Part of the reason I didn't care for
it is usually the reason so many people praised it: the game is based
on a short story by Harlan Ellison. Personally, I never cared for the
man's stories, so that left the game to stand on its own merits.

Unfortunately, the game isn't all that much fun to play. It's
incredibly depressing tale to begin with (the short story takes place
in a post-apocalyptic world where the last human survivors are being
tortured for fun by the world-conquering supercomputer), and none of
the characters are anyone you'd want to spend time with. I mean, when
your protagonists includes a Dr. Mengele-wannabe, its hard to justify
spending ten to twenty hours with them. The gameplay is bog-standard
early-80s point-n-click adventure game, with all the nonsense puzzling
that implies.

The worlds aren't fun places to explore (unlike, say, "Monkey Island"
or "Kings Quest", where clicking on random things to hear (or read)
the descriptions was half the fun. The visuals are depressing as the
rest of the game, and lack the life and luster of its contemporaries.
It's a grim and unpleasant game in almost every respect, and if it
didn't have Ellison's name associated with it, it would have been
quickly forgotten. Even Ellison - who voices the antagonist - sounds
annoyed and bored with the whole project.

But I suppose if you're a fan of the man's books, or a die-hard DOS
adventure game fan it might be worth taking a look at it. Me, I worked
my way through the game once, and I've no desire to ever do so again.
