Last night I noticed the MS prompting to upgrade to Win 11 for free, so
I took it. Unfortunately I discovered that they left out a convenient
screen snipping tool. Instead they offer the WinKey+Shift-S key combo
that sucks, frankly. Anybody knows a better way?

You didn't mention cost as a criteria.

For free (private-use only), I used PicPick (https://picpick.app/).
For paid, I currently use Clipmate (http://www.thornsoft.com/), and have
for many years. I never used the snipping tool in Windows as I wanted
something more robust.

If free is required, alt.comp.freeware may have more suggestions.

Did you type "snippingtool" in Start : Run, then pin to taskbar ?

What is weird, is if you upgrade from Win10 (Insider) to Win11 (Insider),
the pinned Snippingtool icon becomes "blank" and you have to type
Start : Run : snippingtool and actuate the Windows 11 version, and
when that is pinned to the Taskbar, it has its own colorful icon.

*******

One other *very important* thing to note.

In Windows 11, not all screen capture tools, are capturing
the same colors. They've buggered with the screen buffer somehow,
perhaps to ruin low-speed 4K video capture or the like. If you use
GIMP to do screen captures, you might get different colors than
the SnippingTool (or prt-screen).

Compare carefully, and decide what tool or method to use.

It's possible the title bar on a window will come out weird.

I wonder if that is why two of my monitors now show colours
differently, darker, from the other two. All the same maker, two
different sizes. I'll have to investigate.

Microsoft had a problem with that in the past.

The monitor driver consists of three files.

x193w.cat <=== installer security details
x193w.icm <=== colour profile, the colour palette for correction of colour
x193w.inf <=== installer for hardware (incl. PNP numbers)

The problem was, the monitor arch in software, didn't support
"one monitor - one .icm". A person would install one .icm, it
would apply to two monitors, even if the monitors were different
brands. But that bug was fixed a long time ago, like back
in WinXP era.

Not all monitor brands, provide the monitor driver and .icm colour
calibration. (The calibration is generic for the model, and is
not generated with a Spyder for your specific monitor - still, it
should make the monitor pretty close to calibrated colour for the
chosen colour temperature.)

NEC is pretty good about it. Westinghouse brand, does not
provide a driver, period and end of story. My Acer monitor
had a driver.

You can go to Device Manager (right-click Start), and
ask Windows Update to update the Monitor driver for each one.
Then, if the brand is generous with their drivers, Windows
Update will install it. The INF file provides a text string
which "decorates" that Monitor entry in Device Manager, after
installation is complete. If you want to know what Device Manager
will call the monitor, after the monitor driver is installed,
that is declared near the end of the .INF file.

The example above, is the Acer driver. But the number in
the file name, is not the number printed on the back of
the monitor.

The monitor "internal" model number, can be determined from the
EDID table the monitor is sending via the "Real Time" option here.
It could be the "Plug and Play ID" number. But if Windows Update
is doing a good job, you likely don't care about this level of detail.

Luckily I've found the old Windows 10 SnippingTool.exe in the System32
folder of Windows.old folder. I pinned the exe file to the Start menu
and it works the same way as it was in Win-10.

Make sure you move/copy it out of the Windows.old folder. Windows.old
will be removed when Windows cleans up after upgrade.

The "snipping tool" is probably my favorite Windows 10 feature over
Windows 7. Fast and convenient.

Huh? Do you mean you like the Windows 10 Snipping Tool better than the
Windows 7 one? Or are you saying that Windows 7 didn't have a Snipping
Tool?

If the latter, then I think you are mistaken, because (at least)
Windows Vista already had a Snipping Tool, so the later Windows 7 would
have it too.

The Windows 7 snippingtool, has no "delay time" option. That sucks.

The later versions of snippingtool, do have a "delay time" option.

That's the difference that matters to me, as having some
"delay time", allows me to use the mouse to re-open the menu
I want to photograph.

On Windows 7, I use GIMP for screen capture, as it too has
a "delay time" specification so you can open a menu just
before the capture happens.

I was thinking about copying it out of there, but then the .exe file
might be tied to some running lib modules which should probably also be
moved with the .exe file, right?

Is the Snipping Tool a mouse-driven tool? I can see losing elements in
a program's GUI if you had to click somewhere else. You open a menu,
click somewhere to start the snipping tool, and the program's menu
closes because focus changed to a different window.

I've not ever used the Snipping Tool. Do elements in the program's
window disappear (those that would when the window loses focus) if you
instead of mousing to capture you use the Winkey+Shift+S key combo?

Many things interfere with the capture of menus.

Consequently, the good version of SnippingTool is a prime
candidate for the job.

On OSes where this is not possible, GIMP will do the job.
As it has all the same desirable characteristics (delay timer).

Currently, Windows 11 is the only place you have to be
*really careful*, as not all the tools capture colors
the same way. Compare your Win11 Snippingtool output,
to your PrtScn and your GIMP, before deciding what to do.
Maybe they'll fix it, but my experience is, issues of this
sort hardly ever get fixed. The phantom dialog ghost in
Snippingtool took years to fix.

The Win11 Snippingtool has picked up a Linux affectation,
and does an imitation of a photoflash shooting the screen.
Which adds nothing to the exercise particularly. Gaudy.
