Is there a way to add some comment or text to a downloaded file. As an example: I downloaded a video in mp4 format, is there some software that will allow me to enter some descriptive text that my file explrer can see and access?

You can try attr(1); but it's not installed by default on most linux
distros; so chances of the file explorer looking for / caring about them
are probably pretty close to nil.

However, there are media-specific metadata tools (e.g. id3 tags for MP3)
that will probably be viewable / usable within your chosen media
player/library manager.

You could create a spreadsheet containing a list of links to files you
are particularly concerned about, and store all sorts of information
about the files there, dates, etc. The only disadvantage I see is see if
you delete the file, then you would need to update the spreadsheet. I
know this is not exactly what you wanted, but it would get the job done
in a reasonable way (I think).

Apparently you can do this with ffmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy -metadata title="Your Title" -metadata
artist="spaceman" -metadata comment="Comments go here" output.mp4

https://superuser.com/questions/1644304/how-can-i-edit-a-video-files-comments-field

Haven't tried it myself yet.

There are a number of out-of-band metadata
methods for packetized multimedia files.
EXIF, ID3, and other schemes, use codes
which the multimedia parser just ignores.

You still need a tool to add the info.

Files which are not packetized (.pnm), there might
not be standardized ways of adding info to them.

File systems which supported a comment field,
you could do Properties on any file, and check
for comments. But then again, the OS with that
did not have the ability to search the comments.

This means there are all manner of full solutions
and half solutions.

This one reads ID3, but does not write it.

https://linux.die.net/man/1/exiftool

So that one supports JPEG and EXIF, as a combo, and
can write that combo (save EXIF into a JPEG).

MP4 in the table in that one, shows as ReadOnly.

When you have the name of a tool, you can try this in Google.

alternativeto exiftool

*******

Some general comments here.

https://kdenlive.org/en/project/adding-meta-data-to-mp4-video/

It says FFMPEG can do it. FFMPEG can do everything (of course)...

No, I will not stop PGP Signing my messages.

Thunderbird (your NNTP client) should offer a methodology for hiding of
the signature text in the message display window. In slrn (my client),
it's "]" .

Actually it doesn't, but there appears to be an Add-On that provides the
option called 'Disable Signature'.

But don't do it - it's terribly important that we can verify the
authenticity of Usenet posts. ;)

Aw, that's unfortunate. I haven't used tbird since you needed enigmail
to do gpg signing, must've been an enigmail "feature" then.

Or at least know that someone saying completely off-the-wall things
isn't actually the 'common' name in the article list. (yeah, yeah "oh

Enigmail was a great enabler for Tb.

The enigmail dev doesn't support Tb anymore since v 78.xx, just
interlink, epyrus, and postbox. I tested the newer Tb v/s some time
back and found them 'unsatisfactory' for pgp related purposes.

Today I tested v 102.4.2 (not the latest) by using its openpgp manager
to create a keypair, and used pgpdump on your sig block to get the keyid
(yes I know there is a fingerprint in your sig) and fetched your pub key
from the ub keyserver and imported it.

BTW, I find such 'popular' methods of getting public keys such as those
used to authenticate linux distro/s to be a 'corruption' of the
recommended ways of verifying pub keys which are 'impossible' these
days. Fortunately the key managers provide sufficient options to
distinguish such imported keys from those which were *truly* verified.

Tb's openpgp function satisfactorily verifies the msg part (exclusive of
your sig) and reports what it has verified and displays that (absent the
sig).

Tb can NOT display your msg w/o the sig block and its delimiters. So I
would say that the current Tb's pgp is 'operational' but inferior to the
older Tb + Enigmail. It is possible to use such as Tb 78.14 + Enigmail
and have a 'better' pgp agent. It is very very common for Tb to lose
good features during its 'evolution'; that has hurt Tb a lot over the years.

Quite so. Shame that it misbehaves in that manner. :(

More about Enigmail.

I heard (somewhere) that Texstar aka Bill Reynolds dev of PCLOS had
compiled an Interlink mail/news client for pclos, so I grabbed a 2023 v.
of his KDE Darkstar. Interlink is a linux mail/news that enigmail supports.

That pclos boot led to a lot of trouble for me to get its live boot res
and gfx driver corrected, which I finally did (thread in aol); I went
around the mulberry bush before I finally simply used modprobe.

Then I found PCLOS interlink in the repo/s and booted it. It looks just
like Tb, except that it can access its own add-ons which include
Enigmail. Installing the add-on works like it did in Tb, providing a
separate menu.

However, as far as I can determine, it still doesn't hide the clearsign
block and delimiters.

If I had known how much time I was going to spend trying to fix the gfx
display problem in pclos, I might've tried to compile the interlink for
something else.
