Well, the 'official' c.s.i.p.g.action Holiday Give-Away may be over,
but Epic is still at it. Here's what they are offering this Boxing
Day:

Control
https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/p/control

This is another repeat (last offered back in June this year), so you -
like myself - may find you already have this game. But if you missed
it when it was free six months ago, you have another 24 hours to claim
it. I'd recommend you do so; it's not a great game (it's a bit
repetitive, it lacks in visual spectacle, and the story is a mess) but
the gameplay is fairly solid and it's a joy to play with the physics
engine. I love ripping up chunks of masonry from the floor and
throwing it at monsters. It's definitely something you should add to
your library.

Thanks Spalls. I think I remember a couple people here saying they
liked it and I have thought about buying it a couple of times.

I grabbed it and am actually installing this freebie now!

You are correct again. I already have it.

Since you apparently can remember Epic's freebies, and all of my Epic
games are freebies, I am sure that basically means you know what is in
my Epic library better then I do.

It is a very good game. Went mostly under the radar for many people, I
guess they want to build a franchise hence they give it away so many
times, they probably cash in for the the money they get from those
freebies and hope to cash in for a second part now that many people know
the game.
Sort of like the first shot is free.

Ditto. Web site will just tell me if I have it already or not. Hey, I might
have missed something in the past. ;) Or worse, a web site glitch. :P

I got it free from Amazon and it had been on my radar for sometime due
to the favourable reviews. When I played it, I can't say I really like
it mostly because it seems to have a story but a story that I'm not that
interested in seeing how it plays out. Maybe I'll give it another try
just to see if there's something I'm missing.

If the gameplay isn't grabbing you, I don't think playing the game any
further than you did will bring you any happiness. The story and
setting aren't "Control's" strong point, and - after a few hours - you
probably have seen enough of it to have a good idea of what is to
come. There aren't any real twists or revelations; it's just more of
the usual "urban supernatural" that come back into vogue every few
years. "Control" build up its atmosphere and suspense, but it doesn't
really do very much with it and the payoff at the end is fairly
disappointing. What enjoyment I got from the game - besides marveling
at the technology - had to do with the game's connection with the
"Alan Wake" franchise, and even that required the addition of DLC.

I think "Control" is an excellent game, but not one without faults,
and it is a game with fairly niche appeal. You're judgment after a few
hours is likely accurate, and while I wouldn't want to dissuade you
from playing the game to completion, you should go into it with
tempered expectations.

Playnite - a games library manager - has a "date added" field, which
lets me reference when I got the game. This is useful for telling me
when a game first was offered on Epic (since invariably I grab the
freebie there), but not if it has been offered a second or third time.
Whenever I announce a freebie on Epic that I already have, I just
check that field to see when they offered it previously.

It makes me look cleverer (or more anal-retentive?) than I actually
am. ;-)

You're organized. I am not. Haha. I just hoard them. I have SO many free
games now. I won't remember where they are. ;)

Good to know as I found the gameplay itself rather uninspiring so I was
hoping that a good story (to me anyway) would keep me engaged. Looks as
though that's not going to be true.

How does Playnite work Spalls. How does it detect all the games
someone has from all the clients someone has.

I downloaded it but am sort of afraid to install it but if you are
using it then it should be okay.

It works quite well, although I completely understand your hesitation.
In order for it to work, you need to give it (or at least pass through
it) your passwords for Steam/Origin/etc. and it took me quite a while
to cross that hurdle. This is third-party software made by some
unknown guy on the Internet; I recognize I'm taking a risk every time
I use it. Still, it's available for years and thousands - millions? -
of people have used it, so (I blindly assume) if there was some
maliciousness to the program, it probably would have been discovered
by now.

Once you get past that hurdle, though, the software is nice. It pulls
your libraries from a variety of sources* and displays it as a single
list. It will automatically import game information either from the
storefront or from IGDB.** You can display as grid or list. The search
features are fantastic; want to find all games made by Psygnosis in
1992 but only for XBox? You can.*** You can import your own games that
aren't hosted on a digital service - either games you've got installed
on your PC, or just a list, and customize their entries, including
custom covers or screenshots. You can link directly to their manuals.
I've added my list of "games I have on CD-ROM and floppy that I
haven't found digital versions of yet" and my on-disc "DOSBox games"
collection. It also has robust support for emulation programs.

Using the program is simple; import your libraries, tweak them (or
not) to your hearts content, and then marvel at all your games in one
giant library. Clicking on an uninstalled game prompts you to install,
clicking on an installed game launches the program. It does this
through the official clients - so you still need Steam/Epic/Uplay
installed - but you have the option of having Playnite launch (and
optionally quit) the storefronts whenever you fire up a game.

Its biggest downside (aside from its origins) are that it doesn't
handle duplicate games very well. Or rather, it handles them by
showing all the duplicates. If you have a copy of "Alan Wake" on Steam
and GOG and XBox, you'll have three entries. There are third-party
hacks and supposed plans to better this issue in later versions, but
at the moment, duplicates are just... duplicated.

Another limitation - but not one that is necessarily a downside - is
that it is primarily focused on being a game launcher. It has only the
most rudimentary support for social activities (essentially, an icon
that links to Steam's chat client). It doesn't currently display
things like achievements and has only a rudimentary support for how
long you've played a game. There's no storefront on Playnite; if you
want to buy a new game, you need to go to the individual clients or
their websites.

GOG's "Galaxy" client shares many similar features, but it has less
support for other clients, and far less customizability. Its search
features are less robust, and I find Galaxy to be slower and I prefer
Playnite's visual aesthetic. Still, if your gaming library isn't as
widespread as mine is, you may prefer it to Playnite, given its more
'official' origins.

Myself, I'm sticking with Playnite. It's a great way for me to keep
track of all my thousands of games - I've even imported a list of XBox
games into it. I can't play them through Playnite, but at least it
reminds me they exist - and I like how all my games look in a giant
list. It's not a program for everyone - it's aimed mostly at people
like myself who have an ungainly number of games - but for those who
need something like this, it's far preferable to any alternatives.

IMHO, as usual.

* Steam, Origin, GOG, UPlay, Twitch/Amazon, Bethesda, Epic,
Activision, Itch.Io, Playstation and XBox. Possibly more.

** International Games Data Base, a website that hosts information
about games.

*** You won't find any, since the XBox wasn't released for 15 years
past that point, but you can search.

Sounds like an impressive piece of software! Isn't Galaxy supposed to
do something like this, and GeForce Experience?

GOG's Galaxy also has the ability to combine your libraries into one
massive list and - props to the developer - it handles duplicates much
better. On the other hand, it has far less robust and sorting options,
is far less customizable, doesn't handle quite as many sources (for
instance, no official Itch.io or Amazon games support), has no
emulation support and doesn't allow manual adding of games. Plus, I
prefer Playnite's interface and find Galaxy sluggish in comparison
(especially with regard to library imports/updates).

On the other hand, GOG.com/CD Projekt RED is definitely a more
reputable source than 'some guy on the internet'.

GeForce Experience is a horse of a different color altogether.* It's
not really intended as being your primary one-stop launcher for all
your games. Its main goal is to stream games from nVidia's cloud
servers. You can import some of your libraries** into GeForce but it
will only show you - and allow you to stream/play - the titles where
nVidia has made agreements with the publishers to stream those games
(that's maybe about a quarter of my Steam library, for instance). No
launching or installing of the other games, even if they are on disc.
So it is far more limited, and that's even before you consider its
lack of search and customizability.

As a streaming platform, it's probably my favorite... but as an
all-in-one launcher, it lags far behind the others.

But, again, depending on your library of games and on your needs as a
gamer, it may be perfectly suited for how you play.

Maybe I should see what GOG Galaxy can do. Sometimes I think it would
be nice to see all my installed games in one place. Maybe uninstalled
too.

I use StarDock Fences to organize my installed games by client.

What exactly does streaming your games from nVidia do for you?

Given the choice, I usually prefer to run games locally. However, I
like GFN for a variety of reasons. Firstly - and perhaps most
importantly - it's free. Okay, nVidia does offer a premium version
too, and the free version has a number of disadvantages (the most
notable being the wait time before you can start a game), but since I
use its service so rarely, this doesn't affect me too much. I also
like how GFN streams games I already own in my library, rather than
requiring me to subscribe to a service's selection or buy them anew.
And while streaming games can't match the latency and quality of
locally-installed games, GFN still provides an acceptable experience.

When do I use GeForce Now? In those rare instances I want to quickly
check out a game without the bother of having to install it first.
"What does 'Control' look like with RTX enabled?" "Did 'Black Mesa'
start with a tram ride like the original?" "Is 'Dead Age' the sort of
game I should install and play?" It's a quick way for me to preview a
title without any real muss. As such, it's not a product I'd ever pay
for, but as a supplement to Steam/GOG/etc., I find it useful.

Wait. How does it know you have those games? Do you have to connect your
online game services (Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, EA, Batte.Net, Bethesda,
etc.) to NVIDIA's account or something? Or can you use ANY installed
games (I currently have Quake 1, D&DO, & LOTRO)?

I did try GFN once to see how it was with Portal 2 (finished it a few
years ago) a couple years ago or so, but geez that took forever to start
playing due to a hour queue wait. Also, I noticed its slight delay lag.
I don't know if it was my Internet or my over decade old, updated 64-bit
W7 SP1 HPE PC. :(

You need to link your Steam (or Ubisoft, or Epic) accounts to you
GeForce Now account. It then parses all the games in those libraries
and displays the games it has license to stream. This will not include
your entire library (example: "Dark Souls", which is in my Steam
library, does not show up in GeForce Now because there is no agreement
between nVidia and the game's publisher that it can be streamed).

There is no option to play locally-installed games through GeForce
Now. You don't need Steam (or UPlay, or the Epic Games client)
installed to stream games on nVidia, although you will obviously need
an account with those services.

Yeah, the queue can be annoying, although wait times can vary
dramatically. Sometimes I get in on five or ten minutes, other times
it can be close to an hour. For larger games, it's still about the
same amount of time I'd spend downloading the game though. Of course,
if I was playing the game more than once, the queue would be a
deal-breaker but - as I said - since I mostly use GFN just to check
out a game once, it's an acceptable penalty. And, of course, the queue
only is forced upon free users; premium users who pay for the service
get to play games almost immediately.

There is a definite hit to quality and latency, but I don't find it
that noticeable. With regards to the visual degradation, I really have
to squint to see the compression artifacts. Usually it's fine and
doesn't really affect my gameplay. The latency is a bit more
noticeable; it's not game-breaking except for games extremely
dependent on timing. For most single-player FPS games, adventure
games, and RPG or strategy games, it's not an issue. For online FPS
games or racers, there may be moments when it's a problem. But that's
highly dependent on your Internet connection.

One thing I liked about GeForce Now was how well it scaled. Playing
something like "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" at maximum quality on a
ten-year old super-cheap Acer laptop was a treat.

Hmm, that might make it worthwhile since getting a new VC is currently
next to impossible right now, especially with several games that
while my computer can run, it doesn't run them great, and a number
of games I really want to play, but my VC is well below recommended.
