GOG is trying to hustle in on Epic's generosity; they're giving away a
game too. What game? Why, it's:

X-Morph: Defense Complete Edition
https://www.gog.com/game/xmorph_defense_complete_edition
I know it's wrong to judge a game by its title, but wow, that game
screams Indie jank. But is it? I've no idea. It's a shooter/
tower-defense game, though, so you can't go too wrong. Then again,
with the limited mechanics of a tower-defense game you can't go too
right either. It looks colorful and the reviews are fairly positive,
and you get all the DLC, so there's that. Get it knowing that it's a
game of limited sophistication and niche appeal. And, most
importantly, free.

I won't complain too much. It's rare that there's a freebie for a game
I don't already have a copy of it on one service or another, so I'm
grateful. You have 45 hours left to claim the game, after which
they'll expect you to pay for it (the capitalist fiends!)

Took it.

Their free game giveaway also worked. I bought Witcher III, which
is 80% off, since people say that's the best one.

I quite like tower defence games just not on the PC but instead the
iPad. There's an appeal to playing a game for 10, 20, 30 mins when out
and about and then putting it down.

I'm not quite sure what it is (the same with the Steam controller) but
it's only on the PC that I can spend 1hour+ playing a game. I even got
Sunless Seas for the iPad and even though a used to play two or three
hours on the PC, on the iPad I just lost interest after at most 20mins.

Some games are designed for play only in quick spurts. There's nothing
wrong with this sort of game (I enjoy a few myself) but they tend to
have simplistic mechanics and gimmicky gameplay. They give you a quick
high or adrenalin rush, and then the cycle repeats with little
variety. It's perfect for mobile games, where you might pull out the
phone or tablet while waiting for a train or (back in the day, when
such gatherings were common) for a friend to show up at the
restaurant. You didn't want a longer experience because you were
likely to be interrupted just as you were getting engaged.

But that gameplay works poorly on the computer, where you make effort
(and this have expectations) to have time to play for a while (unless
it's a game like Solitaire, which you usually squeeze in between tasks
at work ;-). You want that long-term engagement, and the limitations
of mobile games quickly becomes obvious. But those longer games work
poorly on mobile; they require more time than you usually have to give
(oops, here comes the train! Hey, Buddy's just arrived for dinner),
and their more complicated mechanics usually demand more finesse than
a touch-screen can provide.

Both game styles are great; they just show their weaknesses when
transferred from one platform to the other. You can, of course, enjoy
full-length games on a tablet and mobile-style games on a PC, but you
usually have to struggle a bit more at it because they aren't playing
to the device's strengths.

IMHO. YMMV. OAAOD*.

That's my semi-official plan for "Cyberpunk 2077".

Well, maybe not free, but drastically dropped in price. It's already
being sold fairly regularly at half-price; I expect in another year I
might get it for $10. In two more years, $5, and after that? Who
knows, it might be as Ant suggested, a freebie.

But it's not just frugality and hard-earned wisdom that's leading me
down this track. The mixed reviews of the game and the genre are
mostly what's keeping me from buying right now. I'm not that big of a
fan of cyberpunk, and the first-person, action-heavy gameplay just
aren't what I want from that sort of game. I'd mostly be getting it to
marvel at the tech and visuals, and I'm not sure that's worth $30
(much less $60).

"Witcher 3" is easily worth a tenner, though.

That's really the reason I brought up Sunless Seas. It plays really
nicely on an iPad and I'd go as far to say at least as good as on a PC
but I just couldn't into to playing it. Maybe it's the environment where
when I'm in the PC room that's what I'm doing whereas when I'm on a
train or plane that's not what I'm doing.

I must have better tower defense games in my library, like C&C
remastered and FrostPunk (which I totally did not do my research and
it turned out to be something much different than the name sounds - I
thought it would be something like CyberPunk! :).

But, what the heck. It's free and I don't have to download and
install it. Even though I can't stand GOG Galaxy's interface.

Well, that is an advantage of GOG; you don't need to use Galaxy. Just
download the game's installers from their website and never look at
Galaxy again.

I'm not a fan of Galaxy myself; I find it rather sluggish and limited.
I wish they'd kept the original's "wooden bookshelf" aesthetic. I fire
it up once a month or so to update the game's libraries (its connected
to Steam and Epic) but it's just so slow that I never use it past
that.

Ehh. I find it refreshingly fast whereas Epic and Steam really like to
take their time, at least when starting up. Then again, the only game my
Galaxy is aware of is Cyberpunk 2077.

With patching Galaxy does something really weird. It takes a very long
time but doesn't use much CPU or disk so I don't know what it actually
does. I guess that kind of light patching can easily run in the
background without slowing down a running game but other than that it
makes no sense.
