Well I'm surprised.

Apparently Cisco IOS for S/390 is software that runs on the mainframe
(as an application inside of MVS). It seems as if it provides more
standard Open Systems (TCP/IP) services and functions as an application
layer gateway to the mainframe.

Most of the links end up redirecting so I can't see much of what it is.

On the other end there are some parallel and escon cards for the Cisco
7200 and 7500 that can do SNA and TCP/IP, I think the emulate a common
channel controller so no special software on the mainframe side.

Yep. Channel Interface Processors (Cisco parlance).

I know a company that was still using this very thing ~6 years ago.
