Looks like another action-RPG. Can't say the art-style is too
appealing; it reminds me a lot of the early days of 3D when everything
looked ever so slightly deformed because it was made out of a minimum
of polygons. The deformation of the models in this game is purposeful,
however, and not a result of technical limitations. Maybe it's an
uncanny valley thing? Or maybe I just don't care for cartoony games.

Well, click-to-add anyway. No sense letting a game get away just
because I have no immediate intention of playing it. Who knows; I
could change my mind.

I do wonder if Epic will continue giving away games, though. The last
news we had as to their plans was that they would continue the
offerings "into" 2022, but that doesn't mean we'll still be getting
free games at the end of the year. While there certainly would be a
backlash if they shut down the program, I can't imagine they are
seeing too much real benefit from it anymore; I doubt they are
attracting or converting significant new customers. They are probably
better off switching to giving away $10 coupons each month than entire
games; at least that impels customers to actually spend money in their
store.

Still, it's not as if Epic is running short of money and - while its
amazing growth has slowed dramatically - Fortnite is still a huge
success for the company. Still, I suspect a lot of the reason Epic is
still giving away games - aside from hopes of customer retention and
conversion - is to 'stick it' to Valve, which does not offer a similar
program. ;-)

Which is, of course, the wrong way to go about things. Clones rarely
do as well as the original. Building a better mousetrap gets the world
to your doorstep, not building the same old mousetrap but with a
slightly prettier appearance.

Still - and I'm sure Epic is very much aware of this - video-games are
a very fickle market. It's even more the case when your primary
audience is in the 12-24 age group. "What, you're still playing
Fortnite? That was so last year, loser!" While it is unlikely the
income from Fortnite will ever dry up entirely - there will always be
the diehard fans - nor will it diminish overnight, that flow of
never-ending money can disappear pretty quickly.

Seeing as how so much of Epic Games is now dependent on that torrent,
that's got to be quite frightening. When you're a C-level executive
trying to plan out a year's budget, knowing that in six months your
primary income stream might be halved or quartered because your
product is suddenly no longer the popular hang-out has got to make for
some precarious predictions. It is unlikely the company will stumble
upon any similar level of success again - Epic doesn't develop a lot
of games to begin with, and while their products (Unreal, Gears of
War, Infinity Blade) are popular, none of them have in any way neared
the mega-success of Fortnite.

Which is, of course, why Epic is trying to leverage its success with
Fortnite into becoming a publisher and sales platform, like Valve used
"Half Life" to push Steam into prominence. It is a race to see if Epic
can cement their place in the marketplace before the Fortnite gravy
train runs dry.*

Of course, Epic has a much harder job at that than Valve. As much as
people bitch about Valve's 30% cut, when Steam was new it really was a
significant improvement over what brick-n-mortar stores were taking.
The entire digital sales market was fairly new too, with only a few
tiny competitors. Nowadays, there are dozens of other storefronts Epic
has to compete against, and the barrier of entry is much higher; there
is a expectation that the storefronts will have at least a minimum of
features. This is something Epic took a long time to learn (but hey,
at least their client /finally/ has a shopping cart!).
