I thought I'd investigate this possibility, haven't seen it talked
about here. One site said download MediaCreationTool as first step. I
tried it, won't run on my pc, no reason given. Is it still supposed to
be a free upgrade?

Qualifying OSes are Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 (not 8.0).

Name: MediaCreationTool22H2.exe
Size: 19,463,448 bytes (18 MiB)
SHA1: 1BF5F814FFE801B4E6F118E829C0D2821D78A60A

Popped the executable into Windows 7 and got this. [thanks to goog]

installing the update in KB3140245.

That was already installed on mine.

This was next. Changes the default TLS standard used by the machine

to the geriatric IE11.

And that fixed it. On the next run of "MediaCreationTool22H2.exe", it worked :-)

You can always buys a cheap SSD, then install Win 10 into it using the
Win 7 product key.

Why not v8.0? What's Microsoft's reasoning?

Does that invalidate the old W7 key if it is still in used?

This is their notion of "support". To allow the tooling
to work with Windows 8.0 would require verification testing.
And to do so, the OS would need to be "officially supported".
Since Windows 8.0 was retired (can't get security updates for
it), there is no upgrade strategy for it. You would install
Windows 8.1 as an upgrade, then from Windows 8.1 you would
install Windows 10.

I don't know the timing, like whether both W8.0 and W8.1
had SHA2 signing, but that was an issue for Win7. And you
would likely benefit from SHA2 signing before doing the
Win7 SP1 upgrade.

The purpose of a license, is to operate a copy of the OS on one computer.
To use the license, to run the OS on two computers would not be right.

W7 | Machine 1 |

W10 | Machine 2 | <=== using the W7 key to do this would be wrong

It's not a problem to do this. Nothing has happened to the key.
Nothing has been invalidated. The W10 is traceable to a W7 Free Upgrade.
The machine details remain the same (Machine 1). This is what my Test Machine
is doing right now.

No, this method of upgrade-install-ing Win 10 gives you a "digital
entitlement", not a real product key as in buying a real Win 10 (retail
box or OEM)!

But you can always re-install all programs. However, I dunno what would
happen to programs that were explicitly tied to Win 7.

Ah. Assuming both are retail keys, can I still use them on completely
different hardwares (e.g., different motherboards)?

Retail box keys can be transferred from PC to PC. So are digital
entitlement keys.

OEM keys are supposed to be non-transferrable. But you can phone
Micro$oft to beg for it by offering a good excuse. :)
