I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro laptop (2016). Because it is a laptop and I move
it around some, I don’t keep my Time Machine Disk constantly connected. I
usually go through the backup process, twice a day, one in the morning and
once before I go to bed. Since upgrading to12.0.1, the cleaning up process is
taking longer than usual to complete. Sometimes takes 4 or 5 minutes, which
is ok, but just not the way it used to be. What exactly does cleaning up do?
Is a slightly longer period for this to complete a sign that the disk may be
having some problems and I should replace it?

How much space is available on the backup drive?

Have you run Disk Utility on the backup drive?:
