Not sure when Apple in its wisdom decided to remove the search function.
Search is now termed ‘Filter’ and is still available but you must hit
option+command+f to make it available.

I make great use of this function and dearly wish I could make it permanent.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any consideration

command-f puts the cursor in the Find field on the left sidebar. This
works all the time, regardless of what is selected.

Command-Option-F puts the cursor in the search field for song lists and
other library views.

Make what permanent?

If you specify what it actually is you want, probably.

Meh. Not the same as it used to be. Search field used to be part of the tool
bar, similar to what you now get when you hit command+option+f. The sidebar
search does not provide results as does command+option+f which is what I said
I wanted to always be available.

How so? I've used every single version of iTunes and every single version
of the Music app. And the search facility has returned the same results
all of that time up until now.

Maybe rather than stating the search function has supposedly been
"removed" when it hasn't, and that the search function supposedly
doesn't "provide results" when it does, you should explain exactly what
your problem is...

I still have no idea what you are talking about. The filed in the
sidebar absolutely does provide results to a query.

It is the "Search" box in the upper left vs. the "Filter" box in the upper
right. Tim likes the Filter box, but it is not visible or active by default.

The Search box is always active, and it shows results from Artists, Albums,
Songs, and Music Videos when something is entered into it with separate
sections in the results for Artists, etc.

The Filter box is called up by option-command-F or by View -> Show Filter
Field, but only when one of Artists, Albums, etc. is selected in the
left-sidebar. It then shows only results from that category. It goes away when
you select another category and is always off when you start the Music app.
(This is with version 1.1.6.37 of the Music app on my system).

Tim would like the Filter box to always be visible and active and is hoping
there is a preference to make this happen.

It is if your press the command key combination without taking any
other action.

"off" is meaningless here, pressing the command key comvination (which,
of course, you can change to anything you want) reveals the field AND
puts the cursor in it.

> Tim would like the Filter box to always be visible

I doubt that is possible.

> and active

Is is active as soon as you press the key combination.

> and is hoping there is a preference to make this happen.

No, I do not think there is. But he can change the key combination to
anything he wants. Even something like F14. Or switch the command F and
command option F key combos.
