I like to ask this question another way.

"How many times has your computer done something,
for which you have no explanation?"

For this is a measure of how safe you really are.

I've only had one piece of malware on a computer,
in twenty three years.

But on the other hand, I've probably had unexplained
behavior in computers a hundred times over that period.
Some of them, persistent for a year or a year and a half.
(I can't really be sure that was due to bad RAM in low
memory, but that seemed to be the root cause.)

As time passes, what the computer is doing, is becoming
less and less observable. Thanks to virtualization.

*******

I keep a Kill-O-Watt meter connected to the computer. I don't
have it positioned for constant monitoring. It sits over
next to the Test Machine.

Well, yesterday, the idle power went up by four watts.
(No, the line voltage does not matter, because the computer
runs at "constant power", and if the line voltage goes up,
the line current goes down automatically. I checked line
voltage anyway, it was "normal".)

I check Task Manager. Nothing.

I start and kill some virtualization, to make sure the
virtualization is stopped. No change.

I check for GPU activity. The equivalent of NVIDIAsmi
says nothing is going on. There is some video card memory
usage, but it seems to be at a normal level (enough memory
to do compositing).

I reboot the computer, and let it settle. The 4 watts
of mysterious consumption, is gone. And it's still
gone right now.

Now you know why I keep a power meter, connected to a computer :-/

Because I cannot trust software to tell me stuff I need to know.

So now the unexplained computer activity counter reads 101.

You can't be "Apple Smug" about computers... Always
keep your eyes open.

Paul

Well, as I write in my previous thread, Linux OS has many tools to test
if a PC has been (or not) by viruses, malwares ... or other craps like
that. These tools are, for example, tiger, chkrootkit, rkhunter...

Thank you for explaining, Paul. I would have never thought about a
Kill-O-Watt meter, but I understand why you do that.

I still haven't switched to Linux, only played with it, and I could
claim I've kept my Windows clean for a couple of decades, but there's no
way of knowing that for sure. For all I know something was running in
the background, but at that time, I did not have the knowledge on how to
check that.
