I am starting to run up Mint 21.1.

After Cinnamon comes up I get a "System program problem detected" message.

Unhelpfully it does not point to further information. :(

Have you run system reports? In menu.
Where do you see this error? Is it in a window? No title or whatever?

System reports declare no problems.

The error message is displayed in a small window in the centre of the screen.
It doesn't stop me from trying to get other programs working.

https://itsfoss.com/how-to-fix-system-program-problem-detected-ubuntu/

The crash reports are stored in /var/crash directory in Ubuntu.
If you look in to this directory, you should see some files ending with crash.

...delete all the content of directory /var/crash. This way you won’t be annoyed
by the pop up for the programs crash that happened in the past. But if a program
crashes again, you’ll again see "system program problem detected an error".

You can either remove the crash reports again like we just did, or you can disable
the Apport (debug tool) and permanently get rid of the pop-ups.

Anyway, dunno if Mint is the same, but you could look there.

Paul

Nothing in my /var/crash folder (dated 2023-04-11), despite the problems
I had a few days ago - see previous thread "21.1 and waking up after
suspension".

Maybe the "21.1 and waking up after suspension" problem created my
folder but didn't put anything in it, or did and it's since been
deleted. I didn't know it existed until Paul's post.

So this means we have to discover what new thing,
performs this same function.

There's a reference to the Ubuntu Way, here.

https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/apport

However, my Google attempts aren't providing traction. Using
Apport as a search term, isn't helping.

Your link leads to <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport> which has a lot more
information (but is pretty incomprehensible to non-techs like me). There
are lots of further links to Ubuntu pages in that Apport article,
including the last section "Further links". One interesting thing is
that the page was last edited 6 years ago.

What I was looking for, is if anything had replaced Apport.
I do notice that different subsystems have different
places to store crash traces.

I was looking for a knowledgeable overview of some sort,
to make sense of it.

If Mint just copied the Ubuntu way, then you'd expect /var/crash
and /var/log/crash or similar.
