My Dell computer uses the Intel CPU (i7-8700). Does this mean I can
safely delete all the AMD64 files in the C:\Windows\WinSxS directory?
According to Agent Ransack, there are 28,453 of them.

Danger Will Robinson ... on multiple levels

AMD64 files *are* for intel CPUs as well as AMD CPUs

There may be tens of thousands of files in SxS folder, but they're hard-linked
all over the place, you *need* them.

Look at running the clean-up wizard in Admin mode, and tick whatever options
amke sense (i.e. if you want to lose all your download are, go right ahead)
that'll safely remove stuff.

AMD invented the x64 ISA for the processor ecosystem
it shares with Intel.

In its honor, the industry calls 64-bit code "AMD64",
because it invented the x64 ISA first.

You could (in theory) delete "ARM64" or "Itanium"
content from an x86 or x86-64 system, because those
are entirely different architectures.

*******

Five years ago, there was a thought that WinSXS was
a "projection" used for Component Based Servicing (CBS).
The SxS stands for Side-by-Side.

And, that if you deleted the contents of the folder that
"nothing bad would happen, just Windows Update would not
work and maybe program installations would be broken".
That sort of thing.

Well, I finally got around to testing that. I erased
everything in WinSXS and left the WinSXS folder. And
guess what ? The OS would no longer work :-/ Oops.

I restored from backup.

*******

# Research material... No comment.

Dism /Image:C:\test\offline /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

Dism /Image:C:\test\offline /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Dism /Image:C:\test\offline /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

*******

And while we're at it, the files in WinSXS, many can
be hardlinked to C:\Windows\System32. This means, if you
"measure" the size of WinSXS by itself, you're double-counting
the storage. File Explorer is no good for component measure,
because two windows will be double counting the LBAs.

In Windows 10, only the "Properties" circle gives accurate
storage numbers. Thus, if you deleted WinSXS say, you would
use C: Properties before deleting WinSXS and after deleting
WinSXS, to figure out the real WinSXS incremental storage
requirements.

On a brighter note, the Properties in Windows 11 is broken.
The size shown for C: is now incorrect in Windows 11. Enjoy :-)
Of all the things to fucking well break... I tried to figure
out if there was a theme, but I'm not going to give an
opinion on why this happened. Somebody cut too many corners
with their "it's still NTFS 3.1" schtick. You may notice that
Macrium indicates a different partition size during backups,
versus what Properties shows.

I think what I may have done, as an independent measure, was
to run NFI and total up all the LBA contributions. And that's
where I noticed the disparity. I have a script I can run over
an nfi.exe output, to determine total storage space. The
estimate done this way is not accurate (so what else is new),
but the error contribution is way way smaller than the large
number of gigabytes in error. I'm not taking Macriums word
for it. I compare NFI to Macrium and those agree to a much
greater degree, whereas the Win11 Properties number is
anomalous.

Just keep an eye out for that.

Like Paul, I once explored this, when winsxs first came
out. Soooo many files. It's basically an install DVD plus
everything that happens by over time. Why? Because MS
want people to have an experience of "it just works". So
they don't ask you if you'd like to keep 5-40 GB of drivers
and runtimes. They just do it... so when you buy a new printer
it will just work... so long as you buy it soon.

I tried deleting files. The trouble with that is that you
need to research each one. I tried moving the whole mess
to a different partition. That worked fine, surprisingly, but
didn't seem like a good solution. I tried removing it. Everything
went haywire.

Since then I've taken the approach of accepting the
outrageous bloat of later Windows and maintaining disk
images. So if I want to reinstall, or if the whole whole
thing just gets too fat, I can clear it out and copy in
the disk image. A disk image now takes 2 DVDs instead
of 1 CD, but that's manageable.

Component Store Cleanup of the WinXs folder via Disk Cleanup?
- Yes
Does it do a good job?
- Not as well and with less information than DISM

One could also use Task Scheduler's built in component store cleanup
Task Scheduler Library/Microsoft/Windows/Servicing
- Run the task, don't interrupt, wait to finish. Though again, less
information on what was accomplished.

DISM running before and after provides comparison and more options for
deeper clean-up
e.g. For Windows 10 and later
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase
Removes all superseded items.

Note: If upgrading from W10 to Win11, might wait for the 10 days expires
to go back to 10 then run on W11 if removal or checking is desired.
- i.e. Don't reset the base until the desire to return to W10 has past.

That give-away was for March 1 anyway, so expired before I read these
posts. (Today's seems to be some PDF tool.)

That's one of several methods given by How-To Geek in this article:

"How to Reduce the Size of Your WinSXS Folder on Windows 7, 8, 10,
and 11"

<URL:https://www.howtogeek.com/174705/how-to-reduce-the-size-of-your-
winsxs-folder-on-windows-7-or-8/>

The article is dated March 2, which makes me wonder if someone there
reads this newsgroup.
