USB.

It is an ancient Canon Pixma deskjet which I got at a greatly reduced
price when I bought a desktop on sale. Theoretically it has both color
and black cartridges, but I have never printed in color w/ it and for a
very very long time I've been buying refill kits for its black
cartridge. A kit has 60 cc black ink.

Back in the day when I used to buy black cartridges, it was very often a
problem about jets getting clogged. Since I've been refilling, clogged
jets are never a problem. That might be because nowadays my needs cause
me to do a little bit of printing every day, about the equivalent of one
page.

And since this is a LM group which LM I'm in almost all of the time,
I'll add that I do my tiny amount of printing from Win7 PDFXChange viewer.

Most of the time that desktop is booting various live linux distro/s on
a Ventoy stick, not Win7, and I'm not printing w/ the linuxes.

Or, said yet another way, which sounds sorta biased, I prefer to do my
occsl printing from Win software and drivers.

Oh well, that does not help me choose a printer for LM. Ever since my
upgrade to 20.3 I have not been able to print. I have tried a number of
time to get to work but no luck. Using a Brother MFC490cw, wireless,
inkjet.

Brother's released v. is dated 08/19/2021 - (2.2.3-1)

I don't know if there is 'significance' to the fact that your LM is
newer than their release.

Linux packages for that printer have been around for years. I see Arch
drivers dating back to 2015. Sometimes 'old' driver support gets lost,
but one would hope not.

You can install the drivers you need from this website.
https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc490cw_all&os=128

Download the Driver install tool, and both drivers. The cupswrapper
and the LPR. Follow the directions.

I had to do the same using MX Linux for a Brother laser printer.

I have a MFC480DW and it works well.

As other poststers have said you need to go to the web site and install the
drivers for printing and scanning. The scanning has a trap in it that as
installed Xsane only works from root. The normal user needs to be part of
the scanning group (from memory) in order for it to work.

The whole process is somewhat clunky.

Get the installer and run it. Follow the instructions on the screen and all
should be okay.

For those who don't print much:
According to my impression, Canons are much more sensitive to clogging
than Epsons. Is this because of diffenent printing technologies?
Canon presses the ink out by vapor bubbles (heating the ink), whereas
Epsons use Piezo-expulsion.
I never succeeded in making a dried up Canon working again, whereas
with the Epsons flushing of the print head was generally successful.

H.
