As has already been pointed out, automobiles have interior lights.
While stopped by the side of the road (which is the only time a
driver should be using a laptop in the car), turning on the light
solves that problem.

A car has interior lights, a phone has a light.

If not capable of quickly figuring out which side of the USB stick
should be up or down, put a piece of masking/duct/velcro on the 'up' side.

Stan,

I see you just skipped the "what am I missing" part, where the OP mentions
he *doesn't* want to unplug the keyboard. Suggesting that very thing
nonetheless - without any kind of explanation - is just plain rude.

> As has already been pointed out, automobiles have interior lights.

Yep. Though the OP mentions "in the dark", which is something you should
either work with *or* ask him why he doesn't consider/use it.

Rudy Wieser

Take a wild guess why those people flip the USB stick/connector upside-down
*twice*.

(hint: its because they had it the right side up to begin with.)

Personally I just look at the (full sized) plug itself and determine the
"up" side from there. Most of the time the "thick" side goes either down or
to the right.

Just disagree with my suggestions, and get over yourself.

So, in the meantime since you mentioned a USB adapter cord having a
switch, have you found one to show micky? It'll add more overall length
to the keyboard cable. Here's the one micky had to find himself:

https://www.amazon.com/Switch-Extension-Upgraded-Strips-System/dp/B07T9BRNHW/

micky needs to make sure whichever one he gets isn't a dimmer switch.
Many of these are advertised as LED strip dimmers.

My impression from micky's post is he doesn't want to add more hardware
for a solution, so I gave some software solutions while also mentioning
simply unplugging the keyboard before moving it. Herbert wondered about
the extra wear on the USB port with repeated insertions, so I suggested
a shorty USB extender that's left plugged in, and do the disconnect and
insert at at the other end.

I mentioned using software, like Nirsoft's USB Device Viewer and Device
Manager, but those have you wading through their displays to find the
keyboard to then disable it. Plus, with the laptop's keyboard and the
USB-attached keyboard, micky might not know which keyboard device to
disable. There are software keyboard lockers, like:

http://www.keyfreeze.com/
https://kidkeylock.en.uptodown.com/windows
and
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11570/disable-the-keyboard-with-a-keyboard-shortcut-in-windows/
(an AutoHotkey script but compiled into an .exe, so just run it, or use
a shortcut to it)

When micky moves his keyboard (because he doesn't want to use it for
awhile), maybe micky is also not using his laptop during that time. You
can lock Windows to prevent accidental keypresses. Hit Win+L to lock
Windows. Only the Ctrl+Alt+Del key combo will unlock. When desk space
is tight, I've used Win+L to lock windows when I've have had to lay
something atop the keyboard, like a folder from the desk's file drawer
when there is no space on the desk, or I don't want to disturb other
stuff on the desk. Windows lock is also helpful when the cat jumps up
and wants attention by walking on the keyboard (it learned not to wait).
Unclear is if micky still wants to use his laptop, or usage is paused
until he returns to using the USB-attached keyboard.

That reminds me of a previous life and a specific location where if you
saw a car pulled over with the interior light on, it was a sign that its
female occupant was available for adult activities. Our name for the
road provides the clue: 40 Mark Road, as in Deutsche Marks, which also
indicates how long ago that was, as well as which part of the world.

Vanguard,

> Just disagree with my suggestions, and get over yourself.

If only they where suggestions. Instead all you did was to make an
accusation, based on absolutily nothing.

Heck, if you would have left the accusation out I would not have given it
much thought. People make mistakes. But you conjuring up your own truth -
by, on purpose or not, skipping relevant information - and than trying to
slap other people with it ticked me off. Its also not the first time you
did it.

> So, in the meantime since you mentioned a USB adapter cord
> having a switch, have you found one to show micky?

And why should I have done that ? Are you suggesting that micky is stupid
and not able to do a search for it himself ? You really think lowly of
other people, do you.

Than again, you already called him, based on nothing, a PEBCAK ...

> It'll add more overall length to the keyboard cable.

And water is wet.

But hey, why are you telling /me/ that, and not micky ? Maybe he's as
stupid as you think, and didn't figure that out himself yet -
nonwithstanding him having already found and seen such cables - and you
would stop him from making a mistake.

> Here's the one micky had to find himself:

Oh my, you mean he's capable of looking for and finding one himself ? Who
would have thought. :-p

Also, old news. You might have not noticed it, but he posted that in a
direct reply to yours truly. Hard to miss.

> My impression from micky's post is he doesn't want to add more hardware
> for a solution,

Kid, you know better than to bullshit me. 'Cause that is all you are trying
to do here. Trying to come up with a reason why you didn't think of what I
thought of. As if you not having done so (because you never saw such a
cable ?) somehow makes you less than me.

Kiddo, it doesn't. You suggested some Nirsoft program to switch the USB
port on/off, and maybe its what micky can use. I did not think of it. Than
again, I got the impression that he didn't want to "removing its USB

As for the rest of your message ? Why do you think I'm in any way
interrested in it ? Why haven't you put that in a post directed at micky ?
As such, ignored.

Ehhhh... if you didn't see it yet, thats a power-only cable. No signal
lines. Unusable for what you need it for.

You have to thank vanguard for telling me the "news" that you found a cable,
and that it adds to the overall length (he somehow seemed to think that
neither you or I would have realized that). Which for some reason made me
take a peek at the cable to see how long it is. I must say, I did not
expect it to be 40 inch (a meter).

IOW, although I think vanguard is a bit of an ID 10-T, he's been helpfull by
accident. :-)

You certainly are striving to be a troll, aren't you. Um, YOUR

suggestion was the only proper one.

Wow, and you called me stupid for thinking micky doesn't research before
asking (despite that's his modus operandi), and now you're calling micky
stupid because he surely cannot manage to read other subthreads.

Vanguard,

>> Are you suggesting that micky is stupid
>> and not able to do a search for it himself ?
>
> If you have read his past articles, micky doesn't research before asking
> here.

An accusation belied by your own telling me he did find a cable himself.
Also, I don't respond well to hearsay. Somehow I always get the feeling
that whomever is using it has something beef to grind with whomever is
targetted. So, whats your beef ?

Also, if that is something you do not like, why were you suggesting I should
have done such searching for him ? That doesn't make much sense, now does
it.

> Um, YOUR impression was micky wanted to add more hardware,

Nope, I wasn't under any such impression. You really have no clue to why I
did suggest that "hardware", do you ? Even after I pretty-much already
spelled it out for you ...

> so, of course, your suggestion was the only proper one.

Did I say any such thing ? Oh well, lets go thru out old song-and-dance
again :

1) I respectfully demand from you to put your money where your flap-traping
mouth is and post a quote of where I said any such thing - or even where I
/hinted/ at it.

2) You will bluntly ignore it, refusing to post anything of the kind - for
the simple reason it doesn't exists - and try to change the subject, likely
by conjuring up some other accusation.

And by the way, you *again* seem to have "missed","skipped" or "ignored" the
part where I actually said the opposite - in my previous message. Wel done
bub. not.

> Wow, and you called me stupid for thinking micky doesn't research
> before asking (despite that's his modus operandi),

You may think whatever you like. I've only got a problem with you stating
such thoughts to me as if they are facts and expect me to agree with them.
You've already shown and confirmed that you have no problem with ignoring
relevant data and than make up accusations from whatever is than left.

> and now you're calling micky stupid because he surely cannot manage
> to read other subthreads.

Nope, I call *YOU* stupid for - again - expecting / demanding that the OP
reads all messages in a thread he started, even when they are not directed
him. I guess finding one of mickys posts, press "reply" and than put your
"this is for micky" stuff in there is just to much effort and possibly /way/
to complex for you to manage ...

.... On the other hand, there is a distinct possibility that you have no
consideration for whom you are talking to (as you might consider yourself
talking the only thing important). That would certainly explain you making
(purposely?) baseless accusations and posting stuff supposedly(!) directed
at micky in a post adressed to me.

Kid, go take a hike. Instead of explaining yourself or just saying "I made
a mistake" you try to conjure up stuff that can't be verified in any way -
even directly opposite to what has actually been posted by the OP.

I don't trust you. And you keep re-affirming that with every contortion you
try.

Goodbye (otherwise you will keep yip-yapping until forever).

Regards,
Rudy Wieser

In case you don't visit subthreads looking for further suggestions, as
Weiser, my stalker, inferred when I replied to him instead of to you,
here is a copy of some of my other suggestions in that pissing contest
subthread with Weiser:

There are software keyboard lockers, like:

http://www.keyfreeze.com/
https://kidkeylock.en.uptodown.com/windows
and
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11570/disable-the-keyboard-with-a-keyboard-shortcut-in-windows/
(an AutoHotkey script but compiled into an .exe, so just run it, or
use a shortcut to it)

When micky moves his keyboard (because he doesn't want to use it for
awhile), maybe micky is also not using his laptop during that time.
You can lock Windows to prevent accidental keypresses. Hit Win+L to
lock Windows. Only the Ctrl+Alt+Del key combo will unlock. When desk
space is tight, I've used Win+L to lock windows when I've have had to
lay something atop the keyboard, like a folder from the desk's file
drawer when there is no space on the desk, or I don't want to disturb
other stuff on the desk. Windows lock is also helpful when the cat
jumps up and wants attention by walking on the keyboard (it learned
not to wait). Unclear is if micky still wants to use his laptop, or
usage is paused until he returns to using the USB-attached keyboard.

You don't need to install software if Win+L will work for you.

This is a good suggestion, IMHO. I use the Win+L combination in
similar scenarios, and I wish I'd thought to suggest it.

I have the lock screen suppressed, though, so I get the login screen.
But the chance of the cat walking across the keyboard in precisely
the right sequence is essentially nil.

My gosh, life is complicated. I wonder what people do who don't use
newsgroups or have some other good source of info.

I'll have plenty of time to check details like this when I get home.
In my defense, I might have noticed this problem before I actually
bought it. But now we'll never know. You ruined that for me. :-)

The "303 switch" is meant to imply a 3PST switch is
used, interrupting D+, D-, VCC and leaving ground
connected. Which is the same as unplugging.

There are five connections, D+, D-, VCC, sig-GND, shield-GND
and the last two can be left connected without interference
with the source device. It will not think anything is
connected when D+, D-, VCC disappear.
