Is that like 16-bit software ?

I tried the following search:

Lotus Word Pro for lawyers

and found this. So at least there's a picture.

Does that even exist anymore? I remember using it in the 90s. If anyone's
still using it I'd recommend they move to libreoffice.

We all have different tastes. If anyone's still using it, I recommend
that he move to WordPerfect, which in my opinion, is much better than
Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, or Open Office.

Smart Suite free download, if you can figure it out:
https://archive.org/details/LotusSmartSuite99

About 25 years ago, I created some custom icons on
the icon task bar and linked them to scripts I had
created.
Now I can't figure out how I created them. I was
able to port them to another installation by copying
the resulting configuration:
Work around:
from
/home/OurStuff/SmartSuite.reg/WordPro/icons/ or
/home/tony/.wine/drive_c/lotus/wordpro/icons/
copy
FixCell.bmp
PasteObjectAsText.bmp
PastePartsFromApproach.bmp
universe.smi
to
C:\lotus\wordpro\icons
But I do not know how I created the icons, if I ever
want to add anything else.

I only have one listserv someone gave me a link
to, and they're whittled down to nothing and only
have a couple Excel lists.

In a Facebook decade, nothing lasts forever.

Like, if that popularly runs under Win95 or Win98,
the comms on the machine would make it a virtual island.
Hardly a good place to "work". No vid, no browsing, etc.

If it was known to run well in just about any 32-bit
environment, maybe it would have stood the test of time better.

Paul

Didn't you find it a least bit odd that icon files in your above
workaround were bmp extensions instead of *.ico extenstions.

Never used Lotus WordPro, so can't help with that software.
- a variety of graphic programs are capable of saving an image as a
*.ico file though not as many programs capable of creating a *.smi file
the extension used by Lotus SM.

I do remember that I was the one who created the bmp's.
I did a contents search to find my bmp's and a subsequent
hexedited of the smi found my scripts and extensions in it.

I suspect that the Lotus software probably created it's own smi file
extensions when using one of its features to add icons to the thing you
referenced as the icon bar.

Afiak, that era Lotus smi as an icon file is obsolete, since the smi
extension was later designated as media related file extension(and a
text file) for adding/storing subtitle text for display/use in files
played in media players(VLC, Media Player, etc.)

Unless you really need Word Pro, there are free alternatives to the
Microsoft products that can do every thing MS does, and more.
One free MS replacement is LibreOffice
https://www.libreoffice.org/

When I tested this it did everything the MS Office did.

While there is a cost, I finally went with Corel's WordPerfect suite.
It is available at Office Max for about 70. No other cost except tax.

I personally prefer Word perfect as the formatting is much easier and
the navigation is much simpler. (No ribbon bar to contend with.)

I use Word Perfect and Quattro Pro (The Spreadsheet in the Suite) and
never felt that it was in adequate.

While I prefer the Corel product to the MS product, The clincher was
the fact that the cost was a fraction of the cost of the MS product.
and there is no subscription nonsense.

I occasionally look for alternative, but have found none
the also have division tabs. I also wrote my accounting
software in Approach and the others are not friendly with
Approach. The custom scripts are for porting data from Approach into my
invoices. (I have yet to do my invoices
directly from Approach as Approach is clunky at that.)
I also use Free Office and Libre Office. By Word Pro
runs circles around them. And LO is such a bunch
of F*** Ups.
Word Pro is great at envelopes, tables, division tabs,
is fast, no idiot ribbons. It just works. And
I have too much &*%*ing drama in my life fixing other
peoples stuff to have to constantly fix my own too.

(Including whatever it was the original poster wanted to do in Word Pro?

The few other WP users I know also think it is better (though I suppose
they would). From what I remember from many years ago, it _was_ better
in some respects.

I use Word 2003, which has no ribbon either - I've not seen _anything_ I
want in later versions. (There's very little in 2003 that I use that
wasn't in the '97 version of '95 I had; the only one I can think of for
now is some table cell alignment options, and I _could_ live without
those if I had to.)

To be fair, I _think_ you can still buy a (fairly) up-to-date version of
Office that isn't on the subscription model (though I think it costs
several limbs).

That may be true for MS Word, though I'm skeptical.

As for MS Excel, it is emphatically not true, since (to the best of
my knowledge) none of the free Office clones support VBA (Visual
Basic for Applications).

I'd be delighted to be proved wrong, since I have several Excel
workbooks that I use multiple times a day, and all use VBA.

As I said I use Corel WordPerfect suite, which does support VBA, and
cost a lot less.

Yes, of course.

To me, it's always been better in almost all respects. It was the
office standard and industry leader until version 6.0, which was
extremely buggy. Its being so buggy caused many companies to drop it
and move to Microsoft word, which has been the industry leader ever
since. WordPerfect 6.1 fixed the problems, but it was too late.

It's still much better as far as I'm concerned, but when it comes to
word processors, Microsoft now has its claws into the great majority
of users, and it's not going to let go. WordPerfect will never get
anywhere near its old market share back again.

Quattro Pro is OK, but as far as I'm concerned, Microsoft Excel is
better. That's the only program in Microsoft Office that I regularly
use.

The choice of stand-alone Microsoft 365 Office(Click to Run) vs. the
subscription from an economic stand point is the length of time on
planning on using the stand-alone version.

The subscription cost for M365 is approx $70 per year/single user vs.
$100 per year/up to 6 users across multiple pcs.

M365 Home and Business(includes Outlook) is $250, Home and Student(no
Outlook) is $150. Both are single user, single pc.

Just a matter of figuring out the economics.
At the minimum cost for subscription vs stand-alone the latter would
need to be used for slight more than 2 yrs.

Poor business decisions on Novell's part prior to selling the Word
Perfect and Quatro Pro and other progams to Corel. Then Corel completely
mismanaging what they acquired.

The downfall was not entirely MSFT Office, much of the cause wasa Novell
trying to package/promote Word Perfect and Quatro Pro as replacements
for other same type application software.
- Never a good fit.
In 5 yrs, a year after Corel bought Word Perfect and Quatro Pro and
other apps from Novel(3/4 of a $Billion dollars less than Novel paid for
it) Word Perfect market share dropped from 50% to 5%.
Corel was probably the worst company to package and market a word
processor and spreadsheet that never really fit as an alternative to a
better packaged and sensible integrated suite of products.

I've never liked the idea of an integrated suite of products. I
believe in using what I consider to be the best product of each type
without regard to what suite it's in. So as I said, I use WordPerfect
and Excel, even though they are in different suites.

Oh, they call the stand-alone one 365 as well, do they? I always assumed
anything with 365 in the name was time-limited, perhaps to a year from
the name. I thought the non-time-limited versions were called after a
year - e. g. 2016, 2019. But I haven't kept track, since as I said I've

Depends what mean you by everything. Frankly none of the suites can
replicate ppt. Sure you can make presentations with the others, but they
simply look awful and have limited functionality.

I tried for many years to avoid MS Office but it just isn't possible if you
need to work with other people. Nowadays the integration with Teams is
great and impossible to replicate.

If you're the only one creating files and then printing or sharing them,
that's probably fine.

The Office products)subscription and stand-alone) are all found under
Microsoft 365 offerings on MSFT's web site.
The difference is how they are packaged, sold, and updated.

Subscription models get new features, stand-alone is a fixed point in
time feature.
The stand-alone current is 2021. At the time of 2021 release the two
types(subscription and stand-alone) would be identical feature products.
Since then 6 additional features have been added to M365 Personal and
Family, thus the stand-alone is 6 features behind. Additonal new
features will likely continue for another year or two - with
stand-alones being released in the past every 3 yrs up until recently
with 2021 replacing 2019 stand-alone editions.

Unless one really needs the new features, it remains an economic and
length of use decision for stand-alone vs. subscription
- but if there are multiple users then the subscription model for
Family with the availability for any 6 users(not same pc or same
household)to be invited and use as long as the subscription is active
starts to be a better deal(which works out for 6 users to ~$17 per year
per user). The restriction on multiple users still applies - MSA
required and can only use on one device at a time. For stand-alone an
MSA is also required(though it can be ran in a Local Account with an MSA
sign on in any Office application) but limited to one user, one device.

For a while I have seen 365 to be behind stand alone.
And "new features" is a double edged sword. Means
new bugs and new incompatibilities too. M$ is
a bunch of screw ups when it comes to updates.
The last M$ word processor I actually liked was 2003.
I can't stand the bloat on the newer versions, not
to mention the monopoly price.
And who the h*** thought those ribbons was a
good idea? OBNOXIOUS time wasters.
