Why don't use Google and search for: windows 10 all-in-one for dummies free

I just took a look at it, it has 1154 pages. I think it is much easier to
ask Google if you have a problem with Win10 than reading this book.

And that's a later version than the free one.

That could be a copy of an unlocked one of these. Version 4e.

Looking only at Paul's information, I ran a split-second search for "Windows
10 All-in-One For Dummies" which instantly found six copies of that book
online if I got the name of the online PDF book right.

1. All-in-One For Dummies - 2nd Edition (2016), 2016-09-25, 79.77 MiB
2. All-in-One For Dummies By Woody Leonhard 2018-07-27, 90.87 MiB
3. Windows 10 All in One For Dummies (10 Books in 1) 2018-09-02, 90.87 MiB
4. All-In-One For Dummies 3rd Edition, 2018-07-10 84.81 MiB
5. Leonhard W., Rusen C. Windows 10 All-in-One For Dummies 4ed 2021, 2021-01-21 93.5 MiB
6. WINDOWS 10 ALL-IN-ONE FOR DUMMIES, 2017-07-18 60.98 MiB

Which of these (if any) is the one the OP is asking about?

I always hate the idea of any book called "...for dummies," but since
this one is written by Woody Leonhart, it's probably very good.

I'm just quibbling, of course. Missing from the dictionary definition
is that "temporarily" is usually understood to mean "for a _short_
time", not merely for a limited time. By the dictionary definition,
the Sun is shining only temporarily.

The unavailable offer is for the 2nd edition. The 4th edition, in
case you haven't already found it yourself, is available here for
$27:

I "think" I was "temporarily" able to torrent the title Paul referenced.

I'll hold it _temporarily_ as I don't want it nor do I need it but I wanted
to simply download it to be able to tell the OP definitively whether it
could easily be found and downloaded (where I make no bones about how it was
done) as my credibility is my most valuable asset on Usenet.

Name: Windows 10 All-in-One For Dummies - 2nd Ed (2016).pdf

The fourth edition only had peers and no seeders when I tested it earlier.
"Leonhard W., Rusen C. Windows 10 All-in-One For Dummies 4ed 2021"

I don't want to publicly say too much but you can read into what I wrote as
to how I found it in seconds, & how it took only minutes to torrent the PDF.

The OP can have the book (3rd edition anyway) in less time than it takes to
read this thread if he knows the basics about magnet URLs and torrenting.

I'll hold on to them for a day or so to answer questions and then delete
them as I haven't read a PDF book that big in my entire life & I'm not
starting now as I do Windows things ad hoc (aka, when I need them).

OK. Notwithstanding Stan Brown's dictionary definition showing that it's
not wrong by the (well, one) definition of the word, I'd have thought
tradepub would have changed their wording by now.

That seems to be 4th edition, for $47.99 or $43.19. But so does the
libribook one, so thanks again.

From the web site you mentioned:

"Thank you for your interest in Windows 10 All-In-One For Dummies, 2nd
Edition ($19 Value) FREE For a Limited Time."

It for an old 2nd edition (the current one is the 4th edition). It was
for a limited time. Guess the "limited time" has expired. From
https://www.tradepub.com/?pt=main&page=home.contact, and other web pages
there, this isn't a piracy site, and instead a B2B (Business to
business) document sharing service. Perhaps Wiley, the publisher,
allowed them to make the book available for a short time to drum up
sales. It was a limited promotion. Maybe when Wiley comes out with the
5th edition they might make the 3rd edition available for a limited
time.

The public library in my metropolis has that document (c.2021, 4th
edition) available as an eBook, so it would be free. I don't remember
the term for checkout, but I think it is 3 weeks. The paper copy is 937
pages, so not sure you could read it all in that time. You could read
what you can, and renew the checkout. Might have to wait until any
holds are first satisfied. My library shows the number of holds, and
they don't have any at this time, so renewal would be immediate (you're
at the front of the line to reserve to ebook).

https://www.amazon.com/Windows-All-One-Dummies-4th/dp/1119680573
$27 new from Amazon. Cheaper than from the publisher at $40:
https://www.wiley.com/en-us/Windows+10+All+in+One+For+Dummies,+4th+Edition-p-9781119680574
but they have an eBook version for $24.
https://www.target.com/p/windows-10-all-in-one-for-dummies-4th-edition-by-woody-leonhard-ciprian-adrian-rusen-paperback/-/A-81623563
$24 there for the paper copy. Cheaper than at Walmart ($32):
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Windows-10-All-In-One-for-Dummies-4th-ed-Paperback-9781119680574/634123065

At the publisher's site, they have a link to show the Table of Contents:

https://www.wiley.com/en-us/Windows+10+All+in+One+For+Dummies,+4th+Edition-p-9781119680574#content-section

It obviously has tons of uber-boob fluff that you should already know
since many topics are not specific to Windows 10. My guess is half the
book, or more, is worthless to you.

You have to be quick to hit the 'download' button before the
anti-add-block system kicks in. For a few pounds I'd rather buy a
printed copy (£16 plus postage in the UK)

Thanks for that advice where I am always on a random VPN with a random
timezone and a hardened browser that _only_ does such things (that's why I
have a score of browsers set up - one per task).

As you noted, they make those download sites pernicious on purpose but what
we (royal) have to have is a bit of intelligence and persistence which I
only proceeded for the OP to see what it was that they were talking about.

The torrent route is a lot simpler and less fraught with shenanigans, IMHO.
But the point is that if the item is on the Internet, we can always get it.

All we need is the correct name of the item, and if it's on the net, we can
get it by the various means we all know about so there's no need to expound.

Sure. I just thought the use of "temporarily unavailable" a bit
disingenuous, as - to me, anyway - it implies it might return. Had they
said "no longer available", I'd not have commented.

If I actually had W10, or helped people who do _for pay_, I might
actually buy it - though not sure which; both paper end e have their
advantages. (I remember where things were better in a paper one, and on
the whole probably prefer one [you can annotate it too], but you can
search more easily in an e.)

Yes, probably. I was favourably taken with the Dummies series by (the
general idea! And) the one for (I think it was) Windows 95 by Dan
Gooking: I got that for my mother, as his sense of humour matched ours
quite well, and the level it was pitched at suited Mum (I think) without
driving me nuts. Other Dummies books I've leafed through seem not bad
(and better than most alternative series), though without Mr. Gooking's
humour. Though that's obviously a very personal taste.

Make up up your mind yet ?

Woody, a former colleague, is pretty much retired having turned over the
reigns of AskWoody to my friend, colleague, Susan Bradley.

Buy the book(and support Woody's retirement) or download the free
libribook written by Woody Leonhard and Ciprian Rusen

No clue, though that Amazon offering of the 4th edition indicates a new
version available, when that newer version is the 1st edition.

A reach out informed the 4th edition should be the preferred choice.

Also of note - for other Windows topics and information consider

Thanks for posting the link, Andy.

I've downloaded it. The PDF seems well-constructed; page numbers in
the contents are links, for example. But I wonder just how legal it
is. The book seems to be a legitimate PDF (as opposed to a scan from
some paper copy), but there's a difference between getting a free
ebook for personal use from the publisher's web site and posting that
ebook for anyone to download without reference to the publisher.

I read their "about" and "DMCA" pages, and this seems to be a project
by a few amateurs. (There are a lot of typos too, like "reslut" in
search results.) Maybe I missed it, but they don't seem to explain
how they are able to offer all these books legally. I'm not saying
they're necessarily doing anything wrong, but I would feel better if
I had some idea of what makes their business model legitimate.

Arrggh! "reins", not "reigns". Woody and Bradley are not monarchs of
a sovereign state. The idioms come from horse tackle, not royalty.

Not to rag on you in particular, but this error is distressingly
common. <https://ahdictionary.com/word/search.html?q=rein> gives
relevant examples of the right usage:

"3. often _reins_ A means of controlling or directing: _the reins of
government_.

"give free/full rein to
To release from restraints; allow to go unchecked: _gave free rein to
her emotions_."

One of our local newspapers goofed in
<https://www.tehachapinews.com/news/jeanette-pauer-takes-the-reigns-
at-tehachapi-chamber-of-commerce/article_d7c71464-91e5-11ec-81ff-
2fcbc89d3931.html>
"Jeanette Pauer takes the reigns at Tehachapi chamber of commerce"

It set my teeth on edge, and now I'm noticing the same thing in other
places.

I'm not a lawyer and I never will be a lawyer (as I'm too old now); but
there are something like a dozen (or so) tenets to copyright law which
allows "fair use" which even Google seems to have won on in court, haven't
they?

If people are saying it's illegal before they read these URLs, then they're
making statements that might not be based on the actual facts of the matter.

Note I'm not saying it's the same here as with Google Books; I'm just saying
almost nobody knows anything about copyright law when they make their claims
(just as almost nobody knows about Covid when they make their claims too).

A lot of people "think" everything about it is just what they know about it.

The only "legit" Dummies I have here, is
a "Linux For Dummies" PDF and a
"Next-Gen 802.11ac Wi-Fi for Dummies" PDF which
is compliments of Intel according to the front cover.

I didn't know I had them, until I scanned the big
disk for them :-) I can see why I downloaded the
"Linux For Dummies" one, for the ironic impossible
nature of such a book (you cannot document 500 distros
in a book).

Both of them have "WileyFont" in them. Whereas
the 995 page PDF for the Windows 10 one was
generated by iTextSharp and the fonts have been
anonymized to some extent. Can't see a reference
to a WileyFont, but some sort of font substitution
has been done.

Both of the legit Dummies PDFs were generated by
Adobe InDesign and an Adobe backend, which makes
sense considering there are artworks in these books.
It probably helps with the print version too, in that
such a workflow could do colour separation for the
print shop.

If there was any sort of legitimacy, the author having
"let the item go in the wild", there would be certain
things you could see in Properties, similar to these
ones that really were released into the wild. The Intel
one for example, is "compliments of Intel", which means
Intel never really had any intention of selling the document
as a print book, and it just contains marketing material.

*******

It took me a while to think of a good keyword, but
I also have as a PDF

"Windows 8 for Dummies" 147 pages Andy Rathbone
Dell Pocket Edition

and that has no Wiley EULA in the back at all. That
one is output by Acrobat 10.1.2 and has the Wiley font
reference as well. But it also has this at the bottom
of every page

"These materials are the copyright of John Wiley & Sons..."

to prevent someone from selling the document.

When I see "anyways" I feel the same way as you did with 'reins'.

I just ran a search for you on a.u.e to see if it has been discussed:

To write that someone "took over the reigns of office" is an understandable
mistake, though definitely a mistake. To say that someone "gave their deputy
full reign during their absence" might just be creative use of language,
possibly as a play on the clichéd term "rull rein". There's a zone of
uncertaintly between creativity and bad English, innit...
