For many of us, Friday was a mile our lives, the 1950 census was
released. Now we can find ourselfs in the same records that we have
searched for our ancesters for decades.

Depends which country you live in! It's 100 years before release here in the UK so
I doubt many of us will be around and still interested by then... :^(

We all have so much in common it is easy to forget our differences.

Of course I suppose we should forget our differences, AND concentrate on
what we all have in commong

You're probably right. At present I _intend_ to live that long, but
statistically I probably won't.

If Mr. Putin presses his button, then "incoming!" will indeed be
relevant (and we will indeed have it in common):

1921 due in UK but not yet available on Ancestry, our wonderful
government chose to let a set of crooks have the information who charge
much money to view the results.

Findmypast said the 1921 Census will not immediately be free to view -
but you can access it via any subscription, including libraries. It will
only be available via pay-per-view access for the initial period,
Findmypast said.

It does have to be transcribed and indexed so that you can search it which costs
money! - I've transcribed around 200,000 entries myself in the past and it can be a
bit of a challenge! Not everyone could write legibly in those days (or now for that
matter with most only using keyboards!)

Is this available online? My father and his family would all be there
and probably my great-grandmother though not her husband (who died
1946)

Or do you have to go through a paywall to get at it?

Given the current balance of power three things seem certain: (1) the
West would win a very pyrrhic "victory", (2) there would not be much
left of Russia or likely her near neighbors as well. (I am talking
80-90% of the Russian population KIA) (3) the ultimate winner could
EASILY be a neutral China

How any of this could be a good thing either for the West or mankind
generally is a total mystery to me.

I have been quoted UKP 4.50 simply to see my great-grandfather's Royal
Navy 1914-18 discharge papers (he commanded a minesweeper and was a
commissioned officer).

That seems rather excessive simply to hear "he served 1914-18, he was
discharged <date> and his service consisted of commanding HMS <rather
small ship>"

Since we're discussing my mother's paternal grandfather there could be
an issue of verifying the connection though his first middle name (he
had two) is my middle name. My >son< bears his 3 first names but not
his surname.
