Can anyone post any game that can be downloaded and played locally without internet. These are for my wife, who's not a
gamer.
Card games first. Board games... maybe. First Person Shooter maybe for me.

We have access the the MS games pack or whatever it's called but too many ads.

Thanks.

That's probably the biggest collection of "scavenged" games,
games where the follow-on versions had too many adverts.
The game binary had to be edited, to prevent the OS
from blocking them. That's why they're in that collection -- they
are edited.

That may be true in general, but in the specific case that I posted
about, they work exactly like the Windows 7 games that I played on my
laptop until this past December, and there's nary an ad to be seen.
Malwarebytes and Windows Defender had no problems with them.

I had a cheat sheet of the diffs between before and after. The just edited like 2-3 bytes.
Anyway, I'll dig those out for sure, they were good simple no hassle games.

Speaking of cheats, I enabled the Debug menu in Win 7's MS Hearts game
so that I can flip everyone's cards to see what they're holding. Other
menu items under Debug are Win, Lose, and Autoplay.

That would certainly help your win/loss record, but does kinda take the fun

That reminds me of something I meant to ask: _how_ did you implement
the debug menu, Char? A command-line argument or something?

Directions are here:

<https://www.askvg.com/enable-hidden-secret-debug-menu-in-microsoft-hearts-game-in-windows-7/>

I did the manual method, where I used Resource Hacker to edit the mui
file. They also offer a pre-edited mui download, but it looks like
people have trouble with that one.

FTR, I use Win 7's Hearts game in 7, 8.x, and 10. I don't have 11 yet.

My record was 48% win before the hack. With the hack, I'm at 88%, so it
does help but I mostly use it because the 3 machine players frequently
appear to act as a team against the single human player, so this tips
the table back toward level and restores the fun. I don't enjoy playing
3 against 1. In fact, that's why I went looking for such a hack in the
first place.

Hmm. Can you see a flaw in the following argument? (This is just an
intellectual exercise in probability. I fully support your hacking a
game for your own use in whatever way you want.)

If all four players have equal abilities, and the cards are
thoroughly "shuffled", then over the long run each player should have
25% wins. If the three robo-players are co-operating against you,
they should be able to hold you significantly under 25%.

But you were getting 48%, which means they were getting 52%, or about
17% each. I think that suggests that either they're not trying to co-
operate against you, or if they are then they're getting in each
other's way, or you're so much better than they are that even by
cheating they can't win against you more than half the time. :-)

I wonder just how much of the robots' strategy _is_ strategy and how
much is pulling a random card (within the choices that the rules
allow). In particular, I wonder what the algorithm is for selecting
the three discards at the start of a hand.

I don't think it's at all likely that all four players would ever have
equal capabilities, since one of those four is the human player. In
addition, I don't see evidence that the three robo players have equal
capabilities, at least not at the same time; i.e., within a given game.
If you put the game on autoplay, you get to see that the 3 robo players
are like three small boats on a rough sea. One goes up and does well,
the others go down and do poorly, as the waves roll on. It's extremely
rare that a game is close in scoring. Instead, one player will have a
very low (good) score while another player will have a very high (bad)
score. The other two players will usually be middle of the road. The
only variable seems to be which player takes which of those roles in a
given game. (None of this addresses my claim of collusion, by the way.)

With that said, if I were to accept your premise, then yes, you'd be
correct in your analysis. I see no reason to accept it, though, except
as the basis of a theoretical discussion.

That's not what's happening. The win percentage doesn't look like you
think it should because of some of the behavioral rules programmed into
the game. For example, once you decide to look at everyone's cards you
quickly see that the robo players are highly averse to taking a single
point, even to the extent of allowing another player to 'shoot the moon,
thus earning 0 points for that player and causing the other 3 players to
each take 26 points. You get to see that behavior, and others, when you
see everyone's cards and you see how they play. A second example is that
the robo players 'count cards', something a human player can't easily do
because of the speed of the game.

>I wonder just how much of the robots' strategy _is_ strategy and how
>much is pulling a random card (within the choices that the rules

>the three discards at the start of a hand.

Regarding the 3 passed cards, (not discards), a few patterns emerge over
time. When I look at what each of the robo players is going to pass, I
see things like 3 high hearts, or the A-K-Q of spades, or perhaps 3
aces. If patterns such as those aren't possible, they'll include a
smaller heart, typically.

I hesitate to call the robo play "strategy". It seems to be entirely
rules-based. When I can see the cards being held in each hand, I can
very reliably predict which card each player will play. I'm very rarely
surprised. You might wonder, with that much insight, why isn't my win
percentage much higher? It's because sometimes you get dealt a crap hand
and there's nothing you can do.

Over the years since Win 7 was mainstream, I don't know how many Hearts
games I've played because I tend to reset the stats whenever the number
of games played gets to be about 3000. I'm at 1590 in the current run,
so I'm just over half way to another reset. If I had to guess, I'd say
I've played 25-30K, which seems like a lot, but it's over a long period
of years. I also play a checkers game, and I reset that one when I reach
somewhere between 5000-7500 games. A game of checkers lasts about 90
seconds, so you can do a lot of those in a short time. I tend to play
during conference calls, especially when other people are talking, but
also when I'm talking. There are a lot of conference calls, with most of
them lasting for 8-12 hours, so there's a lot of time to play.
Fortunately, Hearts and checkers don't require any brain power so
they're good choices for mindless activity.
