After kernel updates I have to:

Recomplile drivers for my TBS TV card
Update my signature file (below).

Can the latter be automated? A script perhaps?

The last line of you sig will not change often so you can hard code it.
But the other items can be pulled from the system in a shell script. So yes, it can just re-write where ever you put
the original.

Okay I did some work for you.
Mint 21.1, kernel 5.15.0-72-generic, Cinnamon 5.6.7

for me:
awk -F= '/PRETTY/ {print $2}' /etc/os-release | sed "s/\"//g" returns Linux Mint 21.1
uname -r returns 5.15.0-72-generic
cinnamon --version returns Cinnamon 5.6.8

So just string these all together and add a few comas and such and you got it.

PS looks like your Sinnamon is one # light.

Likely due to your frequent mentions of tv. It seems that you frequently
have problems with your tv viewing whilst using a computer running
Linux. That last time I recall was your having some problem with Myth
TV. To me tv has been hijacked by the government special agents that
project a narrative that is designed to keep the population drunk and
blind to what is going on, as they say 'they will never notice their
slide into slavery because of mtv. Linux is the total opposite and
empowers you or I with the tools to rise to the, put into other words,
while you narrowly struggle to get your tv up and running, there are are
places that people are dropping bombs and the hells and nightmares of
wars are exploding while you passively ignore what is going on. I use
Linux not only for pleasure but also to grasp the news to what is going
on planet earth.

I cannot get the life if me set the sylpheed configuration to run a script for signature.

My info above was based on the fact that I use Thunderbird email. TB uses a fixed file as a signature.
I thought you'd write a script you could call upon any upgrade to change that file, even though a text editor works
really great!
I know nothing about Sylpheed.

As a test of your environment, try this:

sudo cp /usr/bin/xed /usr/local/bin/sylpheed

Now, using your Mint menu, elect to start sylpheed from menu.
What do you notice ? Why, xed started instead.

If your $PATH has /usr/local/bin ahead of /usr/bin,
you could load a script called "sylpheed" into /usr/local/bin
to intercept raw attempts to load the real sylpheed.

*******

Next, craft a script for your new /usr/local/bin/sylpheed script project.
The script will take the place of our fluffed "xed" attempt.

echo Hello > ~/.signature
/usr/bin/sylpheed $@

The first line of script, computes a new signature file.
You substitute your best ideas for computation of the
signature file there.

The last line of the script, causes the execution of the real file,
passing all arguments to it. Be careful, that nothing in the
script, upsets the arguments, or you may need a local variable
to store the arguments or so.

This is a "wrapper" script, and our insertion method is
an attempt to prevent the fouling of the tree during upgrades.

I don't know if this is the best answer, or if there are
still holes in it. I could not particularly find leverage
points in the program itself.

It is past time you learned, because TB is collapsing.
Sylpheed

Like the good women from the Check republic said to me no money no honey. I watched one of those Denzel Washington movies last night, called The Equalizer, gut rushing from out of Hollywood, have you watched it? It is available at bitchute- https://www.bitchute.com/video/sZJul4zk4DOb/

Tell me DW, does the end always have to be some Russian Oligarch, or are the Oligarchs in the US or China or Israel given special dispensation? Tell me are you a proud decedent of some legacy that you can add to your memories that you carry into the unexplained.

So will you come clean, do you operate some hotel where you provide free tv for your patrons, but if, you are some wheel chair bound striving with your talent, it is raining here now and the the thunder and lightening threaten power outing, if this message gets through with sylpheed and the electrical nature of our world, consider the possibility that your good memories are what you can bring through the vail of the great mystery.

There used to be a bunch of people, with
a crazy number of tuners and storage. It was
a hobby, and they recorded all sorts of stuff.

At one time, satellites were unencrypted, and
you could just point a dish into the sky and start
recording.

Someone in my neighborhood, had *two* twelve foot dishes
in the front yard, and that person was DXing satellites
(because they weren't encrypted).

Today, there is very little left in the sky which is
not encrypted. The family with the two dishes in the front yard ?
Dishes gone. Because there is nothing for them to do.

There are other places to pick up signal. In Toronto, if
you were in an apartment building, with enough elevation,
there might be fifty channels available OTA. It's still
possible to possess a whack of tuners and "record everything".

But in terms of broad numbers, people aren't buying tuners
like they used to, and a lot of the smaller companies are
no longer making stuff. If you were to look at Newegg, you
might not be able to tell whether Silicon Dust is still
in business or not (make Ethernet tuners to sit on your LAN).

Not many tuners have a provision for a cable card, making it
harder to record cable TV using cable card. (The cable card
has a decryption key or the like, so the tuner can decode
cable as plaintext video content.) As far as I know, all of
the channels on cable are encrypted now, which is why if
I were to connect my tuner to a hunk of cable, I would get
nada from it (electrical noise).

Alan at least has a couple sources of Freeview to record.
And in many countries, there is still unencrypted high-quality
OTA signals available (like the situation I described in Toronto).

I'm pleased to report that Europe remains different. Most satellite
output is Free and Unencrypted. This is handy here in Ireland because I,
an Englishman, can watch most of the mainstream British channels. There
is even a form of CNN here, but no Fox because they probably don't know
where Europe is (and "It's full of Trump-haters, Muslims and Socialists
anyway").

My Polish neighbour has a second dish, pointing vaguely towards Warsaw.

Your point is well made and I retract my question. Although the larger
question one may ask is if much of the OTA material is only a vehicle
for commercials/advertisements. My self I cut my cable 2 years ago, and
now only watch the local news in the morning. And since as you point out
"Archiving" is very important, because eventually every bit of accurate
information will be behind a paywall.

I no longer watch TV myself.
Because the channels I have available, are a wasteland.

My other PC has a dual-tuner in it, but it's not being used.
In an "emergency", I might fire it up. In Linux, you can try
out "w_scan" to find frequencies with signal present. And
VLC has a mode of operation, where it can use a tuner,
as long as you have a "frequency" to tell it to use. Thus,
the combo of w_scan and VLC, is enough to make a tuner work.
This likely requires a V4L driver for the tuner card. So for
my card, the recipe is:

driver for card (V4L standard perhaps)
Linux fw file for card (not in distro, my card requires manual install of fw)
w_scan ("proves the tuner is there and operational")
VLC (actually watch TV)

The VLC tuner option does not work on the Windows version
of VLC, but it does work on the Linux version.

At one time, specific tuners had standalone TV programs for
them. I had a standalone program for a famous Brooktree chip,
that did all the necessary work. But that tuner card was
NTSC analog only, and once all the analog signals disappeared
here, that tuner card was rendered useless. It's possible
a program like TVTime on Linux, could have used that old card.

The dual tuner has the digital tuners on it (MPEG output from the TV station).
The nice thing about digital TV, is the output is already
"compressed" and can just be written to disk as is. About 2MB/sec.

The old analog tuner was pixmaps, arrived at 20MB/sec, and needed
the CPU to process the video before writing it out. And if you
go back far enough in time, the PCI bus lacked the bandwidth
to run any large number of tuners. The bus is not a limitation
today fortunately. Some of the last tuner cards, were quad digital,
so 8MB/sec would be the output.

The old analog tuner card, could also be used with security cameras
(CCTV). But hardly anyone uses the old CCTV cameras any more, as
the resolution is so poor (720x480 recording format). My dual tuner
card can record just about anything, but I don't know if I have the
adapter cables for all of it. I can do baseband video
on the dual tuner, but have never tested that. There might not be
software to do it even. The dual tuner can do analog TV, digital TV,
doesn't support cable card, can do Composite and SVideo analog.
A tuner card purchased today (if you can still find one), might only
have the digital TV function and may have dumped the rest of the options.

So as of today, on the computer end at least, it's getting a bit
harder to find a good selection of kit. This is why the
Silicon Dust tuner sitting on the Ethernet is an option
(if they're still being made). The nice thing about that idea,
is any PC could have the MythTV front end on it, just pulling
packets from the Ethernet tuner. You're spared the nuisance of
screwing cards into the PC.

PC motherboards also don't have a lot of slots any more,
which makes the hobby a wee bit more difficult for some.
All those NVMe sleds, spoil other uses of the PC.
