Why do some of the pictures I take with my phone, which I've viewing
through the PC, have the extension .vehc , and not the .jpg extension.

Facebook now requires a selfie to enrol, and I took one FB says it can't
upload it, check my internet connection. It's good. Could it be that
it doesn't like the extension? How do I make sure my Xioami phone uses
..jpg in the first place, which it often does?

Or I could use an online converter? Is there any problem inposting my
picture to one of those online converters. They are free, so how do they
make money -- selling my image?

BTW, the extension to view this file is/was free acc. to some webpage,
from the microsoft store, but it actually cost $1.05!! And the results
so far very strange. Not a photo but something with 4 tabs, none of
them photos and one of them just a bunch of numbers.

Previous text, leads to second question:
I've been backing up all my phone photos to my laptop, but yesterday one
was missing!!

That's when I noticed that I've been backing up the phone's internal
storage, but I don't think I ever backed up the ssd card in the phone.
By golly it had about 500 pictures going back for years.

How does it decide whether to store a file interally or externally? I
still have quite a bit of room in the internal storage. Is it holding
that back for apps etc? I haven't been asked where I want it store,
and I use the built-in camera app 99.5% if the time. I used it for the
selfie.

Problem solved. I opened the .heic photo in mspaint and then used resize
40%, 40%, and 80% of previous size, until it looked small enough, and
then saved it as .jpg.

Still pretty big and top of my head seemed cut off on the FB webpage,
but it said okay. I'm waiting for them to say I've been approved.

This question is still important.

I don't know what that was, it was after I clicked on one photo, but now
it's displaying the photos without my doing anything special.

In the camera app setup you choose which storage to use.

it's a newer and more compact format.

<https://source.android.com/devices/camera/heif>
Devices running Android 10 support the HEIC compressed image
format, a high efficiency video encoding (HEVC) specific brand of
the high efficiency image file format (HEIF) as specified in ISO/IEC
23008-12. HEIC-encoded images offer better image quality with
smaller file sizes as compared to JPEG files.

there should be an option to use jpg.

Sure enough. And it says the SD card. It's remotely conceivable I
myself switched it to the SD card. Okay, not so remotely

If so, I was in the settings for another reason and just did that on the
spur of the moment. Then forgot.

So i sent the picture into FBook and I guess I have to wait until they
review it. it's been an hour!

You'd probably preserve more quality by doing a single resize by 12.8%

Since many new current computers have a buit in SD card reader, the
easiest way to transfer the data to your computer would by a direct from
card to computer transfer.

IF it is one of the small cards, get an adapter, place it in the slot in
your computer and transfer using Windows File Explorer.

Depending on the card, you can buy a card reader for about $10, at any
office suppy or computer store. Make sure the reader is for you card,
or if it is one of the tiny card you have an adaptor.

Put the card in the card reader, plug the card reader into the USB port
and transfer them where ever you want using file explorer.

I have two cameras that that have cards, I plug the cards in the card
reader and transfer the pictures as stated above. It takes a couple of
minutes to transfer a GB of data.

Even if it doesn't have one (mine doesn't, but my previous one did),
you can buy a USB card reader for just a few dollars. That's the way
I've always done it.

Useful information. .heic photos are some sort of iPhone abomination
and my linux installation couldn't open one that was sent to me with
anything at all. The simple solution is to bitch at the sender :-(

If a desktop rather than a laptop, and it definitely doesn't have a card
slot anywhere, then rather than an external USB card reader, you can get
one that will go into a floppy-drive-sized hole if your case has such a
hole, or a CD-drive-sized hole (above or below the existing CD/DVD
drive). These readers usually have slots for a wide variety of card
types (sometimes including the tiny ones, so you don't need an adaptor)
- often an extra USB socket as well. Obviously, they need to connect to
the motherboard somehow - either they'll have a USB plug which at worst
you poke out the back and plug into an existing USB socket, or a USB
header that'll plug onto a spare such header on the mobo (mobos often
have more such than the front of your case uses). Same sort of price as
the external readers.

False. They're an MPEG format designed as improvement over jpegs.

Apple are simply an early adopter.

Update your linux or install the heif library appropriate for your distro.
There's no reason why linux can't read them.

no they very definitely aren't.

heic is a new industry standard image format which compresses smaller
than jpeg and is supported by apple, google, microsoft, adobe, canon,
sony and many others.

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Image_File_Format>

a much better and more effective solution is upgrade your linux install
because heic/hevc will become more common as time goes on.

according to the above link, ubuntu 20.04 and later supports it, as
does android 8 and later and windows 10 1803 and later. note that
they're all at least 2 years old.

if you don't upgrade, you're going to have problems exchanging files
with others, who may bitch at you because you're still using an older
format that is lesser quality and doesn't compress as much. you may
also have problems with photos from your own android phone and various
web sites.

You can open it with GIMP.

Your GIMP would have to be pretty old, to not have it.

GIMP 2.6 does not have support for it.

A later GIMP does (2.10 in this example).

https://i.postimg.cc/ZRWpTL1q/GIMP-opens-Apple-formats.gif

The example.heic sample file I used, is from this page.

https://github.com/strukturag/libheif/tree/master/examples

The example file is noteworthy, in that it contains two
image frames, and you select one of the frames, to edit.

There is at least one other tool, that only shows the first
image, and will not divulge that a second image is present.

GIMP at least has a selector window, to deal with the new format,
and allow you to select the frame you want. Some sample files,
have a lot of frames in them (because the format is a kind of
movie container).

That does not guarantee that GIMP can open every variant that
an iApple can make, but it's a start. Even on Slack, you should
have some version of GIMP.

At a guess, you need Slack 15.

https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=slackware

Slack 15 Slack 14.2

GIMP 2.10.30 2.8.16

I just downloaded it, and I'm testing on openSUSE Leap 15.3. It is a
small installation, I don't have everything here.

- Thunar does not recognize it.
- showFoto displays one foto. Does not mention a second.
- Dolphin doesn't recognize it.
- Gwenview can't open it.
- Image Viewer (Gnome) can't open it.
- Ristreto can't open it.
- Gimp can't open it (version 2.10)
- Command "file" does not recognize it:

cer@Elesar:~/Downloads> file example.heic
example.heic: ISO Media
cer@Elesar:~/Downloads>

- identify (Imagemagick suite) recognizes but can not process it.

cer@Elesar:~/Downloads> identify example.heic
identify: no decode delegate for this image format `HEIC' @
error/constitute.c/ReadImage/512.
cer@Elesar:~/Downloads>

It is possible that there are newer versions on the Graphics repository
that can handle this format, but I'm not going to try on this computer.
I'll try back home.

Anyway, Leap is very conservative with updates, it is an LTS version.
Tumbleweed should behave differently.

I searched "vehc" in wikipedia and came out empty.

Wait, it is "example.heic". Why does the subject line say .vehc?

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Image_File_Format>

*High Efficiency Image File Format*

High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) is a container format for
storing individual images and image sequences. The standard covers
multimedia files that can also include other media streams, such as
timed text, audio and video.[citation needed]

HEIF can store images encoded with multiple coding formats, for example
both SDR and HDR images. HEVC is an image and video encoding format and
the default image codec used with HEIF. HEIF files containing
HEVC-encoded images are also known as HEIC files. Such files require
less storage space than the equivalent quality JPEG.[1][2]

HEIF files are a special case of the ISO Base Media File Format
(ISOBMFF, ISO/IEC 14496-12), first defined in 2001 as a shared part of
MP4 and JPEG 2000. Introduced in 2015, it was developed by the Moving
Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and is defined as Part 12 within the MPEG-H
media suite (ISO/IEC 23008-12).

HEIF was adopted by Apple in 2017 with the introduction of iOS 11.

If a .heic file can be a video, I'm not sure image viewers can handle them.

hevc is the corresponding video format, which is widely supported.

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Video_Coding>
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also known as H.265 and
MPEG-H Part 2, is a video compression standard designed as part
of the MPEG-H project as a successor to the widely used Advanced
Video Coding (AVC, H.264, or MPEG-4 Part 10). In comparison to AVC,
HEVC offers from 25% to 50% better data compression at the same level
of video quality, or substantially improved video quality at the same
bit rate. It supports resolutions up to 8192x4320, including 8K UHD,
and unlike the primarily 8-bit AVC, HEVC's higher fidelity Main 10
profile has been incorporated into nearly all supporting hardware.

You need a slightly newer GIMP package.

Tumbleweed 15.3
gimp (2.10.30) 2.10.30 2.10.12

Searching for "heif" libraries as Chris suggests seems to be the way.

Apparently I just need to add two packages from packman (using
distrowatch on openSUSE has complications).

gdk-pixbuf-loader-libheif - GDK PixBuf Loader for libheif
gimp-plugin-heif - Plugin for GIMP to load HEIF files

Now gimp opens the sample file with its two images.

That they are in Packman is often an indicator that there is some
licensing issue. Indeed:

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Efficiency_Image_File_Format#Patent_licensing>

HEIF itself is a container that may not be subject to additional royalty
fees for commercial ISOBMFF licensees. Note however that Nokia also
grants its patents on a royalty-free basis for non-commercial
purposes.[60] When containing images and image sequences encoded in a
particular format (e.g. HEVC or AVC) its use becomes subject to the
licensing of patents on the coding format.[61][62][63]

But:

It's great for the industry to jump on a new standard...
when it's going to cost 7 billion people $0.99 each
for the license :-/ Boneheads.

I don't recollect us paying a fee for JPG. That seems to work.

And you might remember what happened to GIF. Something
with patent issues, that was kicked to the curb for
years, because of issues like this. Nobody even blinks now.

except that end users won't need to pay anything extra because all of
the major operating systems natively support heif/hevc.

> I don't recollect us paying a fee for JPG. That seems to work.

hardware manufacturers and/or software developers normally pay for any
licensing fees that might be needed for whatever formats or technology
they use. it's *very* rare that the costs are passed along to the user.

and then there's microsoft, who created their proprietary wma/wmv
formats, which had *very* expensive licensing fees. the formats were
reverse engineered, but not perfectly.

They are always passed to customers. One way or the other. Commercial
enterprises are not the *Red Cross*.
