Apple, Google & Microsoft want to kill the password with Passkey standard

Apple, Google, and Microsoft are launching a "joint effort" to kill the
password.

The major OS vendors want to "expand support for a common passwordless
sign-in standard created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web
Consortium."

The standard is being called either a "multi-device FIDO credential" or
just a "passkey."

Instead of a long string of characters, this new scheme would have the app
or website you're logging in to push a request to your phone for
authentication. From there, you'd need to unlock the phone, authenticate
with some kind of pin or biometric, and then you're on your way.

This sounds like a familiar system for anyone with phone-based two-factor
authentication set up, but this is a replacement for the password rather
than an additional factor.

Some push 2FA systems work over the Internet, but this new FIDO scheme
works over Bluetooth. As the whitepaper explains, "Bluetooth requires
physical proximity, which means that we now have a phishing-resistant way
to leverage the user's phone during authentication." Bluetooth has a
terrible reputation for compatibility, and I'm not sure "security" has ever
been a real concern, but the FIDO alliance notes that Bluetooth is just "to
verify physical proximity" and that the actual sign-in process "does not
depend on Bluetooth security properties."

That means both devices will need Bluetooth on board, which is a given for
most smartphones and laptops but could be a tough ask for older desktop
PCs.

Don’t worry about it, MS will fuck it up. They always do. Apple and Google
will co-operate right until it looks as though one of them will get an
advantage, and/or until MS screws up. Then they’ll stop and the whole thing
will become three mutually incompatible projects... until MS wakes up, and
joins up with Apple to fight the Google menace. (“We hate each other. We
hate them more.”) Then there’ll be two projects, until Google’a project
joins the legions of canceled GoogleThings and Google implements the Apple/MS
method. Give it at leadt five years, more likely 10, by which time there’ll
be something else new and shiny and the three of them will go for that,
instead.

Mobile phone SMS is still fairly usable!

Why do I have to buy an expensive smartphone that runs cryto-apps which
itself can be a security problem? What if I lost my expensive
smartphone? Would I have to wait for a re-certification, maybe via the
police, to continue doing my online business?

In the end, good old passwords are fine.

Indeed. What I told a shop owner just yesterday :-)

It's hard to explain to people, why you will not
be "vetting your very existence" with 2FA. I have to
go to a great deal of trouble to do business with them.

I don't care if 98% of the population is hooked on
smartphones. I'm part of the other 2%. The part that
can cross the street, without "staring at my toes"
while doing so. When I cross the street, I'm looking
at the traffic... because I have no smartphone.

I had one jackass stop in the middle of a crosswalk in
traffic, just so he could read an SMS or look at
fluffy cat photos. I really wish Darwin would
straighten these people out for me.

Same here, I have an Alcatel Flip Phone 3 which cost me $75.00 new with
a small 3 inch screen, The only use it gets is to call for cabs when I
am at the Doc or hospital, also if my son or I are in hospital then it
is used to call home, no one else has the phone number, in any case it
is turned off when not in use.
I don't text or receive text so I won't die crossing the street looking
at my thumbs. :-)

I have a mobile phone but it doesn't get used as an audio telephone or
to send or receive SMS. Why? Because there's no cellular connectivity
where I live and the telcos tell us that "it's not cost effective" for
them to invest in improved coverage. My phone is primarily used for my
shopping list. Much more convenient than the scraps of paper I used to use.

I'm comfortable with 2FA; the problem I have is with organisations that
will ONLY use SMS for the authentication.

So if you don't have a smartphone you are SOL. (I don't have one and
never will.)

This is off topic to the password issue but I just wanted to help you.

Where I live, there is no cable on the power poles, just the telephone
(which nobody uses anymore) and the power lines. There isn't even water.
Nor sewage. Nor gas pipelines.

The government doesn't want us living here so they even added 40 acre
zoning so that you'd need 80 acres to subdivide (79 acres won't do).

Yet everyone has perfect cell phone coverage _inside_ the house (not
outside, but inside). Why?

Because all the carriers will supply, usually for free, a femtocell.
Or a cellular repeater (I have both).

Back on topic, I hate 2FA with a passion. I wish they'd keep my cellphone
out of their business.

IMO 2FA is a data collection method, a way of obtaining more data about
individuals.
