Hi All,

Fedora 34
mate-desktop-1.26.0-1.fc34.x86_64

When I am in Mate, after a period of inactivity, I
get this annoying lock screen (if that is what it
is called).

https://ibb.co/5G7Qt73

I have set the screen saver to no lock and turned
power and hibernate off.

It does not happen when I am in Xfce 4.14

How do I rid myself of this annoyance?

Many thanks,
-T

Then it doesn't happen.

The key sctrl panel-> screensaver->unlock when idle

Works on all my 3 MATE machines.

Don't use desktop environments.

Just launch a window manager, i.e., Fvwm2, and configure it to your
liking. It won't do anything behind your back that *you* did not
explicitly configure it to do.

While I agree with you fully (using fvwm myself), most people
want fancy :) Of course fvwm can be made to look like anything
and be very fancy with a bit if work.

To the OP, there are plenty of fvwm configs out there with prints
if you do want to try fvwm. BTW, fvwm3 is the new version and
it is quite stable.

I'd like someone to shed some light on the difference between "window
manager" and "desktop environment". I have naively always thought they
were the same thing.
I use the standard Ubuntu 20.04 with, I believe, Gnome. Where does that
fall into?

Thanks

GNOME is a desktop environment, and desktop environments usually
include a window manager, albeit not always. GNOME has already come
with many different window managers over the years, from Enlightenment
— which nowadays is a complete desktop environment in its own right —
over Sawfish to Mutter, and whatever else they fancy.

A desktop environment is a complete and more integrated environment,
with a whole set of applications that share the same look & feel.

A window manager is much more rudimentary and doesn't concern itself
with whatever applications the user might be interested in. It simply
allows for — as the name says — window management: window decorations
with window operations buttons, window placement, movement, resizing,
and switching between open windows. Some include a panel with a task
bar of some sorts, but not all do, and most have some sort of menu that
can be invoked by clicking on a panel button or right-clicking on the
desktop background.

Hi Rich,

For those of us that are not so adventurous, is there
a way to tell Mate not to do this?

Some googling tells me

gsettings set org.mate.screensaver lock-enabled false

typed in a terminal.

Hi Andreas,

I found the stinking screensaver had been set to lock
yet again. I am wondering if updates are doing this.
I must have set the stinker to false 30 times now!

$ /usr/bin/gsettings get org.mate.screensaver lock-enabled
false

Thank you for the command line method. Me think
"start up" would be a good place to run it!

Go to your local hardware store, inquire about
a tool called a "Five-Pound Sledge" ....

Guarenteed to deal with your locked screen :-)

The problem T, is that first of all Mate doesn't do this, in te first
place, and secondly, its T for Troll.

The default option, after years of answering your posts, is that you are
either plain lying or have done something to make it happen and left
out the details

You don't need to use it in any "start up". Once executed, it is active
for all future session.

Just execute the line

gsettings set org.mate.screensaver lock-enabled false

in a terminal. That's all there is.

Ah, but T has already enabled something obscure that changes that line
every time it boots.

So instead of finding out why he is the only man in the whole world
whose screensaver resets to lock-enabled, he is looking for a way to
reverse the *results* of his ignorant fiddling, rather than undo what he
fiddled with.

Fine, if it works for him.

That might still be a default on his system (like in "it's not his

Pun intended.

I experimented with it in the screen save UI and the
command line and the UI both update each other.

I am wondering who turned it back on. I am thinking
it was an update to the screen saver. I will check
the names of my updates a little closer, then double chect with

/usr/bin/gsettings get org.mate.screensaver lock-enabled

After thinking it through a bit, putting it into
start up would be a nightmare to find if I ever
wanted it to lock
So me thinks I will just write a start up program
that will tell me what it is. If I get fancy, have
it allow me to select what I want.

I did some New Cussing at Deb BullsEye today.

Decidedly NOT ready for prime time. A good
third of the stuff I need to use either wasn't
there or didn't work.

Deb didn't used to release until they had a dead
SOLID product. Now ...

Oh, and VirtualBox said I needed to "sign" a bunch
of kernel modules so UEFI would be happy with them -
even though the machine wasn't UEFI (I skip that crap
as much as possible).

Might have to go back to Mint ... even though I don't
really like the odd, non-standard, way 'Buntu derivs
do things.

VB is handier - and often faster.

ANYWAY, I just hosed the attempted BullsEye partition
and installed MINT today. It, and all the software,
works properly. Don't care for some of the weird
'Buntu irregularities, but (a) IT WORKS and (b)
in-place version upgrades work much better. Now
have a nice shiny LXDE Mint LTS install.

Brute-force copied my old home directory on top
of the one made in Mint (minus a few touchy
config files). All is well. Hours to re-install
a fair selection of the apps I had before alas.
Had to hose my old FireFox profile though.

DID bring over the VB config files - and all my
old 'machines' were there and waiting, didn't
have to 'add' a single one. DID have to tweak
the main binary though or only root could
start VB.

For some reason Mint came with an old, 2.0.6,
version of Lazarus. Had to tweak a recent pgm
in a few places - the newest way of initializing
random-length array vars didn't work and the
splitstring() function wasn't there (just a few
lines to make my own though based on tStringHelper
options that WERE there). There's always my old
Field() function if that didn't work ... borrowed
that idea from a PICK-OS derivative decades ago.

READING ascii-delimited fields/subfields/subsubfields
is EASY - but try EDITING the damned things. "Context"
comes in big-time, the "What do you REALLY want to
do here ?". There doesn't seem to be a "general
purpose solution" and I tried it half a dozen ways.

Until recently I did a lot of Python3, often using
Tk for GUIs, but I've gone back to Delphi, so to
speak, and you can make really good GUIs super-fast
with Laz - fairly portable too. CodeBlocks/C for
services and such though. I even have a VM of DOS2 -
with the IBM Pascal compiler suite on it :-) I like
Pascal. Got CodeBlocks set up to use gdc and dmd
compilers today too - try my hand at a little 'D'.

In six months or so I'll have another go at upgrading
Buster to BullsEye. By then they'll probably have it
more sorted out. ACCIDENTLY went from Stretch to Buster
(think I got the Buster repos mixed in there), and it
went much more smoothly than my Buster->BullsEye.
