Had a weird one. Google failed me, but I figured out a workaround on my
own:

"xxxx" (user name) is already a member of group "Administrators":

You can not add a user to group Administrators because Windows thinks
the user is already a member of group Administrators.

1) create a new user. If you can add "Administrators" to the
new user, then "xxxx" user's profile is corrupted.

2) if migrating to a new user's profile is not an option, try
the following work around:

3) create a new group called "Admins"

4) add "administrator" (no "s" at the end) to the new group

5) add "Admins" to "xxxx's" group memberships

6) reboot

7) recheck "xxxx's" group memberships. Both "Admin" and
"Administrators" should now appear.
