Yes, as much as we love Linux or Windows, (can't speak for Mac) it's never smooth.
I do say I think I have less issues here, but then I can get around on this OS in a split second.

Linux Mint Cinnamon suits my OS needs pretty well and I can live with
its imperfections. The idea of an OS or other complex software without
flaws is fiction. I haven't used a Mac since the 1990s, but MS
Windows, oh! the horror...

Well there nothing wrong with the way you put it, my question is
because as per usual, any form of critic on “linux” results in
people attacking the messenger or explaining it away.

IMO this is a really silly and it is most definitely not helping
anyone ever. There is a lot to say about “linux” stupidities
and releasing new releases without EVER!!!! fixing a single bug
is one of them.

When a LinuxMint developer makes a change to a package they
control the source of, you expect a release note.

And there are release notes.

If a kernel.org submission fixes a USB driver, look at
how many levels are involved, for your proposed "bug buster
percolation model".

In my wildest imagination, I could not envisage a way that
every detail could percolate to the user, every source line
that Edmund cares about, would magically flash in front of
his eyes for approval.

As an example of this, look at Firefox browser. 300,000 files ?
A hundred different text file types. Most are not source
(test benches). It's unlikely that a single human, has read
every file in the tarball. Only ChatGPT could write a summary
of changes from release to release. Most of the work there,
involves adding new bugs (rolling release model).

There *is* a lot of information exposed. You can compile a
lot of things from their Debian origins. (An agent like a LLM
probably could access a hundred web sites and build a bugfixed list.)

apt-get source firefox # Not on Ubuntu (snap), not on LM (custom Mozilla contract)
# Only via tarball or mercurial or other method (I have done this)

apt-get source gparted # this should work and should include Debian patch file.

If you look in a source folder that is produced by running that,
you can get some info on the package.

But pulling from all the bugtrackers ? I would not know where to begin.

Change the background image.

Without a license, only the Personalize menu does not work. But you can
get around the background image, as there is a right-click shell entry
that causes the selected image to be used as a background. That's
how I get a "solid color" image on my test screens, instead of the
various awful default backgrounds.

Yes, the antialiasing is bad. The twits use three different
methods on the same screen presentation (none, ClearType, GrayscaleType).
That's not helping. It makes me want to shop for a 4K screen, which
I have no intention of doing. When you check the color of the
central black pixels, they're not black, they're gray, and that
too is not helping.

But I have power tools here. Archive manager ? Get outta here. Decompression example.

[Picture]

https://i.postimg.cc/R0yJjBDd/third-party-software-makes-up-for-the-rest.gif

To compare compression on Linux versus Windows, would take
a lot more runs, and it's just too damn hot in here for
any more of those runs today. I would pick a Linux drive and
a Windows drive, and compare BZ2 to 7z on the same hardware,
as a test case.

A semi-intelligent way to do it, would be to include a bug fix file
with each software project. For the kernel, it might mean every
Broadcom Wifi code module, would have a bug fix file. The premise
would be, a large file count increase in the size of the slash file
system.

It still does not curate the information in a useful way. If
Edmund does not have a "USB sheep shears model 1234" connected
to a computer, why should Edmund be saddled with keeping
a file stored on the disk for it ?

And we know from other experiences of this sort (supporting X languages
requires X files in every package), that some things we've done
in the past, just don't scale well.

Yet, if we don't deliver the files directly, and use a "pull" model,
where the OS keeps a pointer to every bug file, that would be a quite
complex thing to execute well.

I could live with how it looks, it's the whole intrusiveness of Windows
that makes me want to stay with Linux forever. Just about every couple
of minutes there is a pop-up, a warning, a notification, a request, a
hint, a report, a reminder... it just never ends. It's like it
deliberately wants to break your focus.

Plus the fact that Windows officially has total control over your
machine and what you do with it (read the EULA) and that it reports just
about everything to MS.

Yes, I use Windows for work (have to), but I completely agree that it's
a horror story all the way. I really can't imagine having this on my
computer at home.

Microsoft wants all of your information, that's why they use a key
logger. How can anyone knowing this keep using that operating system?

I moved to Linux Mint when Windows 8 came out. I'm now using MX Linux.
