I have many ebooks and would like to have some kind of computer index,
does such a beast exist? Some of the books are very old translations,
think Lucretius. I have Calibre, there anything better?

That is a good article; it is undated, but 'digging' at the site shows
me it is from 2018 May.

In the article he says:

I wonder how the dev went in the past 5 y for the two unnamed and what
they are.

Thank you Mike. I installed Lucidor and like Buko but it does not run,

Take a look there? Why?

Three programs are compared in that ancient article: Buka, Calibre,
Lucidor.

Buka supports only PDF format and hasn't been updated since May 2017.

Calibre's "usage statistics are collected whenever a user starts
calibre. Every Calibre installation has a randomly generated ID, this
ID remains unchanged by upgrades and even an uninstall/re-install."
https://calibre-ebook.com/dynamic/calibre-usage

Lucidor hasn't been updated since February 2019 and requires that Pale
Moon (a webbrowser) is installed.
"Unfortunately the necessary support for running Lucidor has been
removed from Firefox."
https://www.lucidor.org/lucidor/download.php

Possible alternatives:

"Koodo Reader is an all-in-one ebook reader that can help you better
manage and study your ebooks. It's free and open-source."
(numerous formats)
https://github.com/troyeguo/koodo-reader
and
https://sourceforge.net/projects/koodo-reader/files/

"Thorium Reader is the EPUB reader of choice for Windows 10 and 11,
MacOS and Linux.(...) This is the perfect tools for heavy readers,
library patrons and students."
(epub, pdf; daisy)
https://www.edrlab.org/software/thorium-reader/
and
https://github.com/edrlab/thorium-reader/
and (downloads)
https://github.com/edrlab/thorium-reader/releases/tag/v2.2.0

BTW, I use a file manager for organizing e-books, Sigil for editing
epubs and Lucidor for reading epubs on my PC/laptop.

The problem w/ just taking some .deb which says that it is appropriate
for Deb and Ub is that it isn't compiled for YOUR v. of LM/Ub. Often
the .deb is from some years back for some much earlier v.

I always look for what is in the repo/s or a .ppa. Neither of those
exist for Lucidor. I haven't checked Buko.

The lucidor site has a link to its source code; you could compile it for
your distro v. Also the site indicates a 'dependency' on Pale Moon.

Etopian is *supposed to be* a hosting and wordpress site; looks like
they aren't doing their job.

Here's what the page looked like a year ago:

https://web.archive.org/web/20220520062044/https://www.etopian.com/software/bookono/

This may be the most recent that works Aug
https://web.archive.org/web/20220817092616/https://www.etopian.com/software/bookono/

If I were going to test that, I would test it on something like a live
KDE Neon which has uptodate Qt. Plus, it will save your system from
loading all of that Qt on LM.

No; but personally, w/ an installed system, I don't 'go around'
installing 'this and that' just to see how it works. I spend a lot of
my 'time' in live systems, persistent or non-, so I would use one of my
non-persistent live systems to 'experiment' w/ something 'unknown' -
especially something which isn't even in my distro version's repo/s or a
sensible .ppa.

So, it doesn't make any 'sense' to my conservatism to add Qt or any
experimental package like BookOno which requires it to a LM install.
And also requires /another/ browser package. That is a lot of junk.

I have a Ventoy stick w/ a number of different .iso/s incl a May release
of Neon, which is now up to Jun 22 release.

You have convinced me that Book organizers other than Calibre are a
wasteland in the grand Linux world. Perhaps there are other ways to
tackle this problem of organizing ebooks/information. I would like to
know if someone has tackled the unique identifier that Calibre must use
to to be functional, and what is contained in that identifier.

I don't think what you said 'frames' my opinion on this. If I were
looking for something which improved on Calibre's weaknesses which, I
would be testing my interests on a live system.

Again 'personally', that behavior wouldn't bother me as much as it does
others.

This would be a good time for harry to drop in and elucidate his
thoughts about Calibre and that unique id, that phones home with your
entire library and how is that info makes money for some one. Have you
touched good French brandy? Do you remember your dreams Mike? Do you
always have your finger on your mouse, ever ready to understand while
contemplating which live version you can jump to with only a press of
your mouse button, are you right handed?

What bothers me has no cure or treatment,

This is Calibre's transparency about the function of the unique ID,
which info can be found on the calibre page which reports the number of
unique users, which is what it is all about:

> Usage statistics are collected whenever a user starts calibre. Every
> calibre installation has a randomly generated ID, this ID remains
> unchanged by upgrades and even an uninstall/re-install. This ID is
> used to collect usage statistics. Only this ID is stored, no other

So, according to that, when you install calibre a unique ID is created
which 'sticks' to the user's install, unchanging. Then, in the future,
whenever the user starts calibre, calibre phones home and reports "user
#nnnn started calibre".

As a result, calibre knows that 2.7 mil unique users have started
calibre at least once in the last 60 days and it also knows what % are
apparently located in what country, what v of calibre, and what OS.

So, if you care if calibre knows that your calibre unique ID# has
started calibre in the last 60 d, what version it is, what country it
is, and what OS it is, then you would be unhappy about that. Presumably
if you/one wanted to 'thwart' that reportage, it seems that you might be
able to do it w/ such as a firewall which controls outgoing per app.

I have not experimented w/ any of this. You could likely do that w/
such as wireshark or snort and then the firewall trick.
