I'm wondering if anyone can make sense of this. A simple
youtube video. It worked on a phone. In Media Player Classic
I get this message as it plays the audio but no video:

The following pin(s) failed to find a connectable filter:
LAV Splitter Source (internal)::Video

In the latest VLC there's no message, but it also plays
only the audio. https://youtu.be/KfGymftI8CI

Do I need to download updated codecs that don't come
with VLC? Where would I find such a thing?

Plays OK on my VLC, under Windows 7 32 bit. (VLC is "3.0.18 Vetinari".)
I don't remember it updating itself for a while. I think I may have
extra CoDecs - such as the K-Lite CoDec pack - but I haven't downloaded
any such for a while; the most recent I have of that (17.5.5) I seem to
have downloaded 2023-5-1. (I'm not sure if VLC uses external CoDecs
anyway - I believe it may only use its own ones.)

On my system, it also plays on (I think all of these _do_ use whatever
CoDecs they can find on the system): MPC-HC 2.0.0.32, IrfanView 4.62,
and Windows Media Player (which of course doesn't make it easy - or
maybe possible - to check its version number). It _won't_ play on DivX
player.

As I say, I'm not sure if VLC uses CoDecs that aren't part of it, but at
least some of the others do, so it might be worth getting some; the
K-Lite pack is a reasonable collection (Google it - I can't remember
where I got my version from).

ffprobe some.mp4

FFProbe can show you the lineup of streams. TV tuner recordings
are particularly complicated by cruft streams being included, which
tend to "confuse" video players. You will be using ffprobe, to better
understand the mystery meat you have on hand.

I have some videos recorded off a TV tuner in Media Center,
that do not play correctly unless you specify the stream.
Different TV channels on the tuner, have different stream setups.
ast is audio stream from stream number two
vst is video stream from stream number three
The need to specify coordinates ? Dunno. But I wouldn't be doing
that if the automation worked properly, so it could be some
metadata is broken. I frequently record commands, without making
any notes about them.

ffplay -ast 2 -vst 3 -x 704 -y 480 some.wtv

*******

If you're on WinXP, ffmpeg 3.3.3 might be OK.
It was around version 4.x.x that some weird DLL
activity occurred, and nightlies I tested (back then)
were missing stuff.

Fortunately Zeranoe got archived, so the materials
that were on there, are still available.

Ah, it hadn't occurred to me that Newyana2 (_is_ that an old friend by a
new name?) might have captured it with a TV tuner or similar recorder;
I'd assumed some download utility, as he said it was "A simple youtube
video". If done with some sort of real-time recorder, then my other post
is probably not too relevant.

When you have a failure with video, you lean on the forensics
for inspiration.

I don't know what is wrong with his video.

How I learned to play video off my TV tuner, was by starting
by looking with ffprobe, and seeing one TV station had
four streams multiplexed in, the other had five streams.
I was under the impression there were standards or something :-)

The tools I was using, did not seem to like this.

Then I learned you could use stream numbers on FFplay, to get
things to play that VLC could not figure out.

Maya has at least two computers. His nym might not be the
same on them. So yes, that is someone familiar :-)

yt-dlp in "default best mode", returns (after re-mux)

Name: law.webm <=== (I shortened the name to save typing)
Size: 39,380,977 bytes (37 MiB)
SHA1: BF7758379D5F48DDA521D9AFA54234912ED25318 <=== can't be sure this will be preserved

FFProbe sez:

Stream #0:0 Video: vp9 <=== potential trouble
Stream #0:1 Audio: opus, 48KHz

A lot of players will not have VP9 capability.

FFMPEG on the other hand, has VP9 kit in it,

ffplay law.webm

should be sufficient. You would have to check Wiki
for the year-of-introduction of VP9, to see what softwares
are likely to have the format.

VP9 Initial release June 17, 2013 [this could be a googlean format]

Extended from VP8

Otherwise, transcode to a more common video stream format.

Even yt-dlp could have a command line parameter for transcoding
to a useful video codec standard.

Thanks to both of you.

No TV tuner or anything similar on this end. 3dyd, which
someone here suggested and turns out to be a very solid
piece of software. I tried another download, asking it to
convert using default settings. It gave me an AVI that works.

I updated K-Lite and their version of MPC. No help
there. The latest VLC doesn't handle it. But 3dyd worked.
I suppose it would probably be OK on Win10, since it works
on an Android cellphone. But so far these are the only files
I've come across with a problem.
