Contemplating whether or not to buy a Steam Deck? It's neat tech, to
be sure, but the big question is: will my games play on it? Now you
can find out before you buy with Valve's own Steam Deck compatibility
guide. https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeck/mygames

The tool checks your library and divides it into 'Verified",
"Playable" and "Not Playable" (and untested). Verified are games that
work without any issues, Playable run with some problems (either
in-game bugs or some tinkering needed to get them to start), and "Not
Playable"... well, I'll let you figure that out for yourself.

The results, in my case, aren't too surprising; only about 10% of my
library qualifies. There are a few 'big-name' titles that work -
"Dying Light", "Hitman (2016)", "Alien Isolation" but by and far the
bulk of the titles are the smaller Indie games.

Roughly 15% of my games qualify as "Playable" (including, quite
amusingly, Valve's own "Team Fortress 2"). You'll find games like
"Star Wars Fallen Order", "Grand Theft Auto 5" and "Shadow of the Tomb
Raider" in this section (sadly, "American Truck Simulator" also fails
to verify and is classified only as "playable". I need my big trucks!)
This section includes fewer small Indie games and more 'big-name'
titles, but most of these games are older titles.

And then we got the "Not Playable". The numbers here initially looked
quite good - less than 5%! - until I noticed the fine print: nearly
3/4 of my library remained untested. Ouch. Its hard to determine any
commonalities between the games in this list; it's a mix of old and
new, triple-A and Indie and everything in-between.

Still, it's a useful tool if you really are considering a Steam Deck.

I did quite some testing on my steam library in Linux in the last weeks.
Roughly 80-90% of my library were playable.
another 3-4% were playable with some additional wine hacks like
installing addtional dlls via wine/protonhacks etc...
So the compatibility in fact is pretty good, Valve simply has not tested
yet a ton of games.

Either you have a very small Steam library, restricted playtesting to
10 second sniff test, have invented some sort of time lapse technology
that you're not telling us about, or have an interesting combination
of all of the above... :)...

Seriously though I cannot imagine testing 90% of the games in my steam
library. Just waiting for the things to load would probably take six
months of full time work.

750 games... not really that small and yes I gave it a run test,
starts... play for 10 minutes and off to the next one.
However I did not test my entire pile of shame, only the titles which
really interest me, there were so many titles which came in via bundles,
free offers etc.. which do not really interest me at all. So in the end
I probably tested 150-200 games but I do not have any multiplayer games
which takes anti cheat out of euation so that already is a huge pile of
games which is not playable or at least only partially playable.
Most games in my library really ran out of the box and played well.
There were some giving me problems
Some games from EA which enforced their stupid origin launcher which
broke the steam controller for me (due to the intermediate layer)
Then Rockstar with their shoved launcher as well
Some older titles, like Velvet Assassin (that title has problems in
windows as well, the fix is the same as in windows)
And some japanese titles using WMV videos... aka Ace Attourney
Chronicles being a majof offender here. Those were fixable via wine hacks.

Nope I think I gave the wrong impression see above, I did not test my
entire lib, just the pile I am really interested in.

To be more precise the 80-90% is an estimate given on the games I have
tested so far, that pretty much is the same value ProtonDB gives out for
gold and platinum status. So 90% of a personal steam library playable is
not a too shabby value for a new handheld device. (I know basically a pc
etc...)

One of the problems I found with the Steam controller is a lot of the
games I played are really set-up around a mouse + KB. Even when they do
have controller support I just found it all feels rather clunky.
Possibly as I just never grow up with consoles so it's all a bit alien
to me.

It's making more sense now. For me, the Steam Deck a pass, though.
One of the things I like about the Nintendo Switch is the immediacy
and not worrying about whether a title will run on it or not, but I
can see a certain appeal of the Steam Deck for those who have a
frequent use case for a portable device (I only use the portability
aspect of the Switch on rare occasions), an existing Steam library and
the time/patience to figure out which games work on it.

I think with the Elgato StreamDeck already having such a similar name
(even though the StreamDeck is not a gaming system), Valve would have
been better off from a marketing perspective to pick a word other than
"Deck" to tack on the end of it.

Thats the beauty of the SC, the trackpad basically emulates a trackball
really well even with the haptics. The only games I see where this could
be an issue on the SC is a fast paced mouse centric game like dota 2,
but maybe thats also just a problem of getting used to.
The Steam Deck has a touch display on top of it. and a usb port... guess
this is what we call "Die Eierlegende Wollmilchsau" (eg laying woll milk
pig) of controllers (in german)

I just found it clunky for quite a few of the games I like to play. I
did think playing Field of Glory II on the big TV screen would be fun
but it was just painful. Even something as simple as Disco Elysium, oh I
have to move my thumb around to get to the right response.

The funny thing though is that the biggest complaint seems to be that
not every game runs... but they look at the wrong angle, the "console"
starts with 600+ verifyable playable titles and thousands which yet have
to be verified and are playable.
But I expected that this would become an issue "again" I must say.

I kinda agree and even though I can see why people will make comparisons
with the Switch I just don't feel they're aimed at the same market.

As an aside it'll be interesting to see how dev's react to a game that
currently doesn't work and also how many of them will ensure that games
going forward do work on release.

So I just did a check for official compatibility of my library on the
Steam page, and so far 65 titles of my library are verified and 60 are
marked as playable, the bigger bunch has yet to be tested, but even then
I can start with 125 officially supported games to begin with the day I
will get it (probably more, valve is dropping the verified games in
batches)

Well at least some devs are patching their games for the Steam Deck as I
had two games updated this morning. I did like this patch note.

"This update brings full Steam Deck compatibility to the Windows and
Linux versions. The macOS version is already fully compatible, in that
it correctly does not run on Steam Deck."

Well it is a chance especially for smaller devs and indies to get early
exposions of their titles giving the smaller list of games, you could
see that with the show off your games videos almost all of them were
done by indie devs and some of them got a huge exposure of their
otherwise unknown games.
This was a genius move by Valve to do that upfront (devs who got the
devkits were allowed to show their only working games in videos)

Some developers are doing the opposite. Bungie has announced that
"Destiny 2" is not Steam Deck compatible and they have no intention of
making it so. In fact, anyone trying to hack the game so it will run
on the game on Steam Deck risks losing their account.

(This is largely due to the anti-cheat software used in "Destiny 2".
The anti-cheat software itself (which was written by a third-party)
has been updated to work with Linux/Proton, but Bungie hasn't taken
advantage of these updates, so the version used in "Destiny 2" can't
run under Linux. The base game runs fine via the Proton compatibility
shim, so if you disable the anti-cheat, you can play the game, but
obviously Bungie doesn't want to encourage people to play the game
this way. Still, the obvious solution would be to update the
anti-cheat software...)

Did another check 78 games are now verified from my list... Not sure how
many are playable at this stage.
So the numbers are ramping up.
