I have a Logitech M570 wireless trackball mouse and its unifying receiver.
Yesterday I spent several hours trying to get my Acer laptop to start
seeing the mouse again. And I tried everything, including all the things
the Logitech support person had me try last time this occurred (about a
year ago) Finally I took the battery out of the mouse, unplugged the
receiver, and powered my laptop off and left it that way overnight.
Reconnected everything this morning and still no go. But this time when I
ran the unifying receiver software it actually saw the mouse, and
everything started working again. Now tonight it started getting wonky
again, but then cleared up.
Anyone else having problems like this?
What does it mean when the green LED below the battery meter blins and/or
stays lit?
TIA

I've used those mice (and their predecessors) for decades and never had
a problem like that. I currently use an M575 which has BT so avoids the
USB-A receiver. Useful when most things now are USB-C.

It could be a hardware fault. Try a different USB port and/or laptop?
The logitech receiver can be bought separately so you can get a new one
to try out?

Otherwise, not sure what to suggest.

I have used two M705 and their recievers for years. Both mice are
still working (replaced some switches inside one). One reciever (guess
10 years old) started acting up, and finally died totally. Bought a
new reciever and now happy working mice all over the place :-)

I have an M305 mouse. Usually the green LED solid just means it's on, or at least when it's asleep and then you touch
first move it, the light comes on for a few seconds. If it blinks, I think it means low battery.
I'm running Linux and they show the battery level of the mouse as well as the laptop battery (same app). Not sure if
Windows does that too, but the mouse evidently can report battery level.

You removed the battery. Did you insert a different and new battery?
"Reconnected everything" sounds like you reused the same old battery.
Using an alkaline battery, and not a carbon one? After inserting a new
battery, spin the battery in the compartment to wipe the contacts. Did
you flip the on/off switch under the mouse (turn it off and back on)?
Possible the switch isn't locked into position.

Got any other 2.4GHz devices near the mouse, like a cordless phone?
2.4GHz is a busy channel used by lots of wireless devices, including the
wifi radio in the laptop. Does the mouse have an open line-of-sight
path to the USB dongle? Is the USB dongle on the same side of the
laptop as the mouse? How far from the laptop is the wireless mouse?
Anyone else around also using a wireless mouse?

Doesn't the mouse have a reset to make it [re]negotiate a handshake to
link up to the USB receiver? The manual shows a button underneath the
mouse, but no description what it is for.

What does wonky mean? Loss of connection again, or irregular onscreen
mouse cursor movement when rolling the ball on the mouse? If wonky
means irregular movement, have you popped out the ball to clean it and
the rollers it rides on using isopropyl alcohol?

Is the USB receiver plugged directly into the laptop, or into a hub?

Receiver is into USB port on side of laptop. Mouse is about a foot away
in front of the laptop.
I use a rechargable in the mouse. Swapped it with an alkaline a couple
times so the contacts should be clean.
Left it with receiver unplugged and battery out over night. Still didn't
work in the morning. Then later in the morning it started working. Worked
for a couple hours till I let it sit for a while while I did other
things. So back to trackpad - I hate trackbads!
Got a new M575 arriving tomorrow. Hopefully it will have a new unifying
receiver in with it. I also updated the software to the latest versions,
just to touch all the bases. We'll se what happens when the new mouse
gets here.

But what other 2.4GHz are around the laptop that can interfere with the
USB dongle also using 2.4GHz? No matter how close the mouse is to the
USB dongle, a cordless phone, microwave, or other 2.4GHz device can
still interfere, and so can another 2.4GHz wireless mouse (we had one
guy watch his mouse move without him touching because someone the floor
above him was moving their wireless mouse).

Is the rechargeable battery back in the mouse? They can be recharged a
limited number of times, each time having less capacity. You can remove
them to measure their unloaded voltage, or even measure their voltage
in-circuit, but they may not be able to deliver the minimum amps under
load, and the load could vary. Try a fresh alkaline battery in the
mouse, like an unused (new) one whose shelf life expires in 5 years, or
more.

When did the discussion move to touchpads? Your mouse is a trackBALL.
Or are you combining the laptop's touchpad into this discussion? If so,
have you tried disabling the laptop's touchpad while testing the
USB-attached transceiver with the wireless trackball mouse? Just have
one pointing device enabled at a time while testing. Many laptops have
a button or Fn+key combo to enable/disable the touchpad.

Logitech unifying USB receiver
https://www.newegg.com/p/0EP-0002-00018
$10

Logitech M575 wireless trackball
https://www.newegg.com/logitech-m575/p/0TP-000C-01CN4
$50

Just getting the USB receiver would've been a lot cheaper. Suspect you
really wanted to get a whole new kit. Well, if just the USB receiver
fixes the problem, you've got a spare trackball. I usually have 1 or 2
spare mice in storage awaiting for when I destroy the current one.

It does. It also has bluetooth which works just as well.

First, I have used the same table-top positioning in re location of
receiver and cell phone in reference to laptop for the last two years, so
I don't think 2.4 ghz is the problem. As a matter of fact it decided to
start working again this morning, so not much left to troubleshoot.

I used my ATSinc Mini=MBT to stress teset the Li-Ion cell and it tested
at 805 capacity, so it's not voltage drop. Again, it is now working with
the same cell.

I trieed pairing with Bluetooth this morning and it started working. To
see if that was the solution I unpluged the receiver and it stopped
working immediately, so receiver is good.

Right now I'm thinking there is some sort of environment intermittant tha
has developed. My replacement has arrived, so I'm going to wait until it
dies again, then swap the receiver to see if that fixes the problem. If
it does I will leave it in for a wee or so to see if the problem pops up
again. If it dosn't I'll just leave it in.

If it doesn't fix the problem I'w try the new mouse, with the same
testing pattern.using the old receiver. Again, extended test period if
that works.

If all else fails go with both new mouse and receiver. If it works, fine.
If it doesn't I'll have to ponder a while on what else it can be.

I also just stress-tested the alkaline cell with the Mini-mtb and it
rated 100%. For those of you not familiar with the ZTSinc testors, they
don't just read cell voltage, they have a patented method of stress
testing the cell to report the percentage of capacity left. I have used
one for years and they are very accurate.

Cordless phone and Microwave were mentioned.

If Wi-Fi Router was also, I missed it. Could be that someone else in the
community reconfigured their 2.4GHz stuff.

My Logitech M525 mouse and unifying receiver never stumbled with desktop
PCs, but then I got this laptop. And a USB-A dock, because the laptop
has only USB-C ports. And got a 2.4GHz router.

Now the mouse cursor sometimes acts jumpy. I suspect the problem is the
USB dock.

Intel has a white paper, on how USB3 emissions can wipe out
2.4GHz wireless devices.

Route the USB3 cable on the side opposite the mouse or mice.

If your USB3 storage device, comes off that connector
on the plastic front fascia of your PC... don't do that.
Move the cable and the peripheral to the back, where the
ground plane is better.

The USB3 5Ghz operation, produces a broad spectral peak around
2.5GHz (info in white paper). This is apparently a "data pattern"
spectral peak, rather than a narrow (spread spectrum)
USB clock-type peak. Usually data peaks of this sort are
20dB down, compared to how pesky a clock peak can be.

The Intel white paper blames the grounding scheme on
some USB3 peripherals, but I wonder just how much improvement
can be made by redesign. I would have predicted the USB3
cable would continue to emit, even if the peripheral was in a
Faraday cage.

While some USB2 cables have used ferrites (and USB2 signals
happen to not interfere with 2.4Ghz wireless), I don't know
if any USB3 cables have ferrites. The example I can find
here (where the ferrite removes common mode noise, like
common mode on the shield), the cable is rather expensive.

I've had that. It's usually a line-of-sight problem. Move the receiver
nearer or towards the mouse. on a previous dock the USB-A socket was at the
back and I often get intermittent cursor issues.

A desktop PC was having that problem with another Logitech receiver
plugged in at the back, behind the steel case. I thought the desk was
too glossy for the mouse's optics, until moving the receiver to the
front fixed everything.

But this laptop has the USB-C ports, dock, receiver, and mouse all
close together on the left side.

I normlly use rechargable, but swapped in an alkiline. Did tht several
times so the contacts should be clean. I pulled the receiver and the
battery overnight. Still didn't work this morning, then did later when I
tried it again. Worked for a couple hours, sat while I did other things,
then didn't work.
Receiver is about a foot from the mouse.Wi-Fi is off

I just turned off the router's 2.4GHz, turned on 5GHz.

The dock and receiver are now over on the right.
Sinistral.

I added a short USB2 cable *between* the Logitech receiver and the
dock's USB port. (In my imagination, that will change everything.)

Wow, I wouldn't want to pay that amount for a whole dock. Maybe my
"dock" is more of a hub, just 4 USB ports, and ethernet port.

A Tripp-Lite. Plastic case, usually feels slightly warm. I think the
ethernet port is wasting 288 mA for no real reason. The dock, with just
Logitech receiver attached, seems to use as much battery as the whole
rest of the laptop.

Thanks for the ideas.
