When I open the lid of my provided laptop, I get a nice picture. I can
hit a key in which case I get a password prompt, or I can hover over one
of two pieces of text - usually top left and roughly middle, or I can
(IIRR) click on the top right one. If I do that last, I am told what the
picture is of, and (every three or four times - or days, I open it about
once a day) the chance to say if I like it.

Until sometime in the last week or so, hovering over the other two spots
has given me more information about what the picture is of (like "this
is the highest waterfall in ..." - that sort of thing; not a lot, but
interesting.) But now, instead, they offer me productivity tips that
have nothing to do with the picture ("would you like to streamline your
contacts", that sort of thing). Which I have the feeling are leading to
an attempt to sell me something.

Anyone else noticed this change? Or always been getting the tips rather
than the interesting info? Or what?

Play dirty. If a fellow contestant asks the audience if they've got any
requests for what he or she should play, reply, "Yeah... Monopoly."

There is a freeware program called 'shutup 10' also works on Win 11.
It comes from O&O S software, a good company. I have had it on all my
10 & now 11 machines. It stops plenty of crap fro MS. Has plenty of
options, but I usually just do their settings.

Would it restore the interesting-info snippets? I thought prog.s of that
nature just rather brutally (and effectively) stopped nags, some
updates, and things - not restored things.

The O&O is a repackager of UI settings and registry values.

It is not attacking the system viscerally, deleting DLLs,
doing binary patches to unsigned binaries or anything like that.

Consequently, all it is, is a switch box with a large
number of switches on it.

Scrolling through the MSFT GUI is intended to drive
you crazy, by comparison.

Settings : "Tailored experience" ???

They couldn't just label it "Our Spam Setting" now could they :-)

Where it starts:

https://www.tenforums.com/attachments/tutorials/224277d1547055773-turn-off-tailored-experiences-diagnostic-data-windows-10-a-privacy_settings-1.jpg

The screen itself could be called Windows Spotlight.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/82156-reset-re-register-windows-spotlight-windows-10-a.html

It's hard to remember the names for these things, because
"annoy me with your spam" is not likely to be the label
on the control switches.

Unfortunately, I'm not supposed to install any software on the machine.

I was really just wondering if the change in the startup picture
hover-over texts was a general change.

I vaguely remember a name something like that being mentioned when I
asked sometime in the last year or few what had stopped the picture
changing (it was stuck on one showing looking out to sea from a cave).
It's back to changing every few starts now, I cant remember whether it
was something I did or got better on its own. (I'm not very good at
this, am I!)

Just for interest: This morning, I got one picture, still with the
productivity hints rather than the extra information about what was in
the picture. I did something (I'm pretty sure it _wasn't_ click on the
"I like this picture" bit), and the picture changed - and the two areas
I can hover over are back to giving me extra information snippets about
what's in the picture.

(One of the pictures - not sure whether the first or the second - was of
a lighthouse somewhere.)

I used to dream of the day when linux was as stable as windows. Never did I
imagine that parity would be achieved by windows declining into the chaos that
engulfs and stifles linux.
