Volume Mixer is always in use here.

I just noticed... Now you can click on the icon above the slider to get to
Properties (if any) for that item.

Wonder when that was included.

W10, I only get a choice of output devices, no 'Properties',

This is Windows 10.

Digital Audio, the first item... Clicking on its icon opens the Digital
Audio Properties.

The second item, System Sounds, opens the main audio Properties dialogue
that includes Playback, Recording, Sounds, and Communications.

The third item, TextAloudMP3, does nothing when clicking on its icon.

The fourth item, Microphone (a USB microphone), opens its Properties.

And so on and so forth depending on how many items are listed in Volume Mixer.

That can't be specific to my system.
It's something Microsoft threw in there at some point in time.
