They cling to their attacks and ignore the message time and time again.

Can't agree with you. The most important thing is always about the right
tool for the job, as long as there are choices.

Ranking might in the end wipe out all choices, leaving the chosen one
that might not do everything. It's a very dangerous move.

I do not know what is desired there.

As is very clear, I tend to respond to those who are trolling (though I tend
to avoid actually labeling someone a troll). I can see people associating me
with such folks, though. I am not offended by it.

Personal attacks from those who troll show their own insecurity. They cannot use reason to show the message to be wrong so they try to feel somehow superior by attacking the messenger.

They cling to their attacks and ignore the message time and time again.

Getting advice on Usenet is often a good idea for two reasons:

1. It usually lets you rule out the choices that are junk.

2. Usenet advice usually comes from more than one person, and that
usually means that there are several decent choices to investigate.

But any piece of advice should be thought of as just advice from one
person, not as a product that is guaranteed to be the best.

When paying attention to newsgroup advice, it's also very important to
only look at advice from someone whose posts you've seen before and
you know and respect. There are trolls in newsgroups, and there also
those who aren't trolls, but who know very little about what they're
talking about. Be very careful about whose recommendation consider.

My recommendation is to try as many products as you can (if they're
freeware or come with free trials), and especially those products that
are recommended by people you respect.

And when you consider someone's recommendation, be aware that we all
work in different ways and have different likes and dislikes. A
feature that's important to me isn't necessarily important to you.
Just because one person thinks a product is a good choice doesn't mean
everyone else will. That's why it's always important to make your own
choices. Use someone else's recommendation as guidance in helping you
make your own choice, nothing more

Two examples of that:

Most people think Chrome is the best browser. I think it's one of the
worst and Firefox is much better.

Most people think Microsoft Word is the best word processor. I think
it's one of the worst and WordPerfect is much better.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to use Firefox or WordPerfect; : I'm
just pointing out that we are all different and don't necessarily make
the same choices.
