I'm currently using LMDE 5 with Cinnamon and finding it just as good for
my domestic and small office situation as LM.

Because it may well become unsupported in less than a year's time, I am
only using it as a secondary system and 'Live' from a HDD rather than a
conventional install. Debian's Live scripts are more versatile than
Ubuntu's Casper ones and it is much easier to Save Changes on LMDE than
on LM. (I have set a password and some bookmarks point to key
directories on my primary system, which is LM 19.3. )

With kind regards,
David in Co Longford

Interesting, but why do you think it'll become unsupported? From the LM
blog it looks like they are working on LMDE 6. Or were you referring to
only 32-bit support?

Not what you said/asked, but...

LM the Ub has 'policy'/configuration advantages over Ub, ie snap,
flatpak, Mint tools
LM the Deb has advantages and disadvantages compared to other Deb
deriv/s. It has LM tools, it is a LM Cinnamon; as a Deb stable it has
advantages and disadvantages compared to other Debs such as those which
are testing.

Deb testing is more 'up-to-date' and also more 'rolling' than Deb
stable, eg compare/contrast the Sparky Deb/s which come in various
DE/WMs and in stable vs testing.

Both LMDE and Sparky have advantages over 'base' Debs in terms of
free/non-free but now Deb is becoming 'looser' re non-free opportunities
for use.

Why're you running an EOL version as "primary system" ?

Hi Dan,

It only became EOL last April and I haven't got around to upgrading yet. :-D

When I do, I think I'll go for LMDE 6 and in the meantime use my Live
‘Poor Man's Install’ of LMDE for any risky behaviour!

Cheers,

Not LMDE, but I recently installed Debian 12.1 from the Live USB Cinnamon
USB. It now includes the non-free repository by default. Not a whole lot
different than installing Linux Mint Cinnamon 21. But this is the first
install that I've used that defaults to kernel 6.1.xxx. So I guess it's more
on the "edge" than Linux Mint. (I think "Bookworm" is the new Debian Stable,
though, not the testing version.)

Speaking of 'edge', the LMDE 6 plans include:

And, Sparky Linux's current roller testing v is 6.3

I guess this is more important for those who use cutting edge hardware. I'm
pretty much the opposite but it's still interesting. I'll probably try out
LMDE 6 when it comes out — not sure about the Edge version, seems kind of
opposite of Linux Mint's stable release tradition. (But I understand why
they're doing it.)

I might take a look at this one to see how it works on the old, underpowered
laptops I still have (but need to get rid of).

Thanks for the heads up.

Sparky has a lot of choices, two groups, the stable and the testing
roller and lots of different DEs, or a WM or a CLI. No default Cinnamon.

I've downloaded the Stable Mate version and will try it out. Thanks.
