After working on something I will revive MythTV on my second screen to watch the new s etc.

Today, although I could see the video, there was no sound.
Pulseaudio's pavucontrol showed all the right things but i could not rercover sound.
I re-booted (as I always endc up doing) after this happens.

This doesn't happen every day but it is frequent.

I am posting this in case someone has seen this before.

MythTV is a television recording device.

It does not write the news cast its own self.

It just records whatever you have connected to your tuner.

This means that MythTV is a "delayed TV set".

*******

Loss of sound, could be related to the hardware device involved.

If you use "HDMI with audio" for example, and the sound is coming
out of the viewing device speakers, if the video card driver does
a "VPU reset", this could have consequences for the audio selection dialog.
Which might automatically remove the (temporarily defunct) device
and select some other item instead. All without human help.

Software cannot be expected to select a <defunct> audio device
for more than a microsecond, before the software resolves the
issue. Even if the decision made, does no good at all.

I think I will wait until this happens again and try to run Audacity or
stream something from a browser. That might reveal where not to look.

Most of my work has to be done on Windows applications.
I run those via VirtualBox.

I mention this because the order in which Vbox, Firefox and Mythtv are
executed may haver a bearing.

Yesterday it happened again. I ran up BBC iPlayer from Firefox and the
sound was fine but I could not get it back under MythTV even though it
showed up under pavucontrol.

Well, it's a zoo, that's for sure. Plenty of variables and stuff to try.
But will it work ? Dunno.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1387154/using-alsa-on-firefox-instead-of-pulseaudio

"Since Firefox version >=52, the browser has dropped support for ALSA
and depends solely on PulseAudio for sound requirements"

"This known issue can be solved by installing apulse, the PulseAudio emulation for ALSA package."

3. Modify Exec=firefox %u to Exec=/usr/bin/apulse firefox %u and save the file.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/69512206/how-to-make-firefox-use-alsa-audio-output-pipewire

The first problem then, is deciding what exactly, is blowing up
the sound. If you knew that, that would be worth a lot.

But you cannot rely on the "compatibility" written on the tin.
It might not be real. Some things might well support alsa/pulse/pipewire,
and others really only support one option.

*******

Does the MythTV have a forum ?

What do the people over there recommend, to control the variability of audio ?
Those would be the people with the most MythTV-as-variable experience.

I don't really want to turn your OS into a bowl of spaghetti, as a workaround.
But if you must have experiments to try, there are experiments.
