Got your test message from AIOE, and later from ES to my individual.net
server.

http://www.eternal-september.org/serverstatus.php?language=en

Doesn't show zero volume, so their servers were up and handling some
traffic.

Too late now, but next time maybe do a traceroute to see if a host in
the route between you and ES went dead or became super slow.

ES does seem very slow, though. I just newly subscribed to
eternal-september.support, and retrieving 6K+ articles is taking a long
time. In the time to write up this reply while checking with a
tracerout along with an interruption, only about 500 articles were
retrieved; however, instead of retrieving just the overview headers, I
retrieve full articles (headers+body) which lets me test on all headers,
not just the overview headers, for more robust filtering.

Did a traceroute to news.eternal-september.org. Nothing unusual. There
was a sudden increase in delay, but that's due to routing along the
undersea cable between continents (New York to France), and no big jumps
thereafter.

I'm not bothered about E-S now that it's back, but I do like Paganini which
has been fine up until today.

Several binary services have perfectly serviceable text groups too,
some with retention up to 17 years. A $5, 10GB non-expiring block
account would last most text Usenetters a lifetime, as Branimir said.

https://usenet-news.net/index1.php?url=get

You're buying a bandwidth block with no expiration. It's not 10GB
lifetime. It's 10GB until you use it up much like your dinner: it's on
your plate until you eat it up, and then have to buy more to fill your
plate again.

To be honest, I've never bothered to measure my bandwidth consumption
with any of my Usenet providers. Never needed to. I only visit
text-only newsgroups, no binaries, so my bandwidth consumption should be
pretty low. However, when subscribing to a new newsgroup, all messages
get downloaded, and some newsgroups are still damn busy (lots of
volume). I'd have to get something to monitor just my NNTP bandwidth
consumption since my NNTP client doesn't do that. I see they have a
user login page. Maybe bandwidth consumption could be monitored there
to know how much of the block quota is left.

They mention "subscription" at their site. I don't want them
automatically charging my Paypal when a block quota gets used up. I
want to buy a block, and then *I* decide later if I want to buy another
block.

If your block account is getting used up quickly, can you buy more
bandwidth to have to added to what you already have (like rollover
minutes for some phone carriers), or do you get another account to
separately use the new block?

You don't have to download binaries, just use text :P
Binaries are just option :P

Since you have an account with them, and if you use their login page to
get into your account, do they show remaining quota in your account, so
you can guage your rate of consumption?
