Is there a way to automount a network share when it becomes online ?

fstab:
//192.168.1.50/XXXbase /mnt/XXX cifs
username=??,password=????,rw,uid=??,gid=??,auto,iocharset=utf8,nobrl,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,_netdev,noperm,x-systemd.after=network-online.target
0 0
also tried with stripped down fstab:
//192.168.1.50/XXXbase /mnt/XXX cifs
username=??,password=????,rw,auto,iocharset=utf8,nobrl,gid=??,uid=??,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,_netdev,noperm

I wasted a whole day trying to map my NAS ( QNAP)

I did fstab

//192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP cifs
credentials=/home/ed/SAMB,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

No luck.....:-)

You should work on the interactive form of the command, until you get the ingredients right.

sudo mount -t cifs ...

sudo umount ...

and verify the basics of a mount work. By working interactively, you
get results immediately.

Is this way of doing it "case-sensitive" ?

The ingredients should be adjusted, to give the best chance of success.

The step of using /etc/fstab, is just a rearrangement of things you've
already proved work.

That sounds like a solid plan, however I didn't attend the Hogwarts
School of Witchcraft and don't know the magic words.

Don't know, I copied this from a youtube lady where it worked.
It doesn't work here and I might have some very well hidden samba
settings from the past....No idea where samba is hiding its (user)settings.

Thanks Paul, you point me in a direction.
Now I get :

ed@ed-Z170X-Gaming-3-MemCard:~$ sudo mount -t cifs
192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP
[sudo] password for ed:
mount.cifs: bad UNC (192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED)

ed@ed-Z170X-Gaming-3-MemCard:~$ sudo mount -t cifs
//192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP
Password for root@//192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED:
mount error(13): Permission denied
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel
log messages (dmesg)
ed@ed-Z170X-Gaming-3-MemCard:~$

The second try ask for a root password but it does not ask for a user
and the user?

Is that the root password on the QNAP they want ???

You should be able to use your QNAP user password. Like Edmund:12345678
for the mount, instead of Root:QNAPRootPassword. The mount, should be the
mount of a share tree, rather than a mount of a physical disk inside the QNAP.
The QNAP OS is supposed to hide the physical aspects of the drive inside
the QNAP, and just present the contents as various file systems. That's
why I might try QNAP Edmund:12345678 first, rather than the QNAP root.

In any case, that may give you some ideas of other credentials to offer.

You're getting closer...

Paul

Well I think so, what else.
BUT!! the user "root" is disabled for obvious reasons which I will
explain anyway.
In order to make hacking a lot more difficult, user "root" is disabled
and another user with root rights is created, that user is "Ed"
So my QNAP can be accessed with user "Ed" and password "Edmund12345678"

>
> You should be able to use your QNAP user password. Like Edmund:12345678

Shit you guessed it! :-)

It is a share.

When I enter :
ed@ed-Z170X-Gaming-3-MemCard:~$ sudo mount -t cifs
//192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP

I get a response :
Password for root@//192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED:

When I enter my password "Edmund1234678"
I get the response :
mount error(13): Permission denied
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel
log messages (dmesg)

There should be a way to give my username and password (maybe
domainname) in one command but how?

sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP username=Ed
password=Edmund12345678

Doesn't work either.

Would the arguments on the end, need comma-separation ?

sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP username=Ed,password=Edmund12345678

There will likely be other comma-separated items to add to the
end of the mount command, to make it a practical usable mount.

The amount shown currently, is just enough to pass the credential barrier.
We want to get the mount to take, before passing the useful parameters.

Have you tried without the sudo, or is the username on the QNAP actually
'Ed' not 'ed'?

Have you looked at 'man mount.cifs' and credentials file?

Username and password are correct, although it is not what is mentioned
here.

The man pages are above my head, but I am trying.
First I want avoid a credentials-file and give user and password
directly, hoping to get a useful -response- instead of nothing happens
without any feedback.

OK, got mine to work. I don't know if this helped or not.

sudo apt install samba
sudo apt install cifs-utils psmisc

And this did not encourage me in any case.

cat /proc/filesystems # maybe this uses fuse or something instead ???

This is what worked for me.

sudo mount -t cifs -o username=bullwinkle,password=12345678 //192.168.1.2/ramdrive /mnt

Summary: I forgot the -o ... Grrr.

You need to get the share exported on the NAS, I think they call it share
folder, and ensure Ed has permissions to wrx. Log in to the NAS and work the
GUI menu.

Should "sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP"

be "sudo mount -t cifs 192.168.1.112:/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP"

Think logically as much as possible.

The share folder on the NAS has to be avaliable, with the correct
pernmissions an owners.

The user acessing the files on the NAS needs to be a user of samba.

Then the share folder needs to be mounted fron the client.

No colon for samba shares; colon for sshfs shares.
In Windows it is \\machine-name\share-name; obv. in Linux it is
//machine-name/share-name. Conversion is done by mount.cifs

It means you have an exclamation mark in your invocation.

Perhaps something you are doing, is getting expanded, and
the expansion has "!" in it ???

In the shell...

!! Execute last command [ that is two exclamation marks by the way... ]

ls !$ Use the end argument, from the previous command, as a target to be listdirred.

There are various pairs using the exclamation, as shortcuts in bash shell.

The vanilla .profile or other dot files provided for usage
with your shell, do not normally have "tricky stuff" added.
It is up to the user to add stuff like that to the profile files.

alias h history

would be an example of a tricky thing to add to the environment,
so you can type "h" and review the history of stuff you've already
executed. But perhaps "alias" was a csh thing. You can tell I don't
waste my time on stuff like that now. I do, however, use the
exclamation occasionally for bash stuff.

!123 # Execute history item 123 again
!! # Execute the last history item again

Big thank you and all responders!

this fstab does the job

//192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP cifs
username=Ed,password=EDMUND12345678,uid=1000 0 0

Of course the username and password now can be stored on a save place
but after 2 days, it is finally working.

If you had asked for a solution that used /etc/fstab, you would have got
the relevant answer much sooner.

Why didn't you give it to me then after my first post about it?

==============
I wasted a whole day trying to map my NAS ( QNAP)

I did fstab

//192.168.1.112/QNAP-SHARED /media/QNAP cifs
credentials=/home/ed/SAMB,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

No luck.....:-)
