Epic's giving us two games today. That sounds exciting, but note that
they've offered both of these free before, so you probably already
have them in your library. Epic just doesn't seem to be putting much
effort into making these give-aways exciting anymore; I wonder why ;-)

Game 1: Total War: Warhammer
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/total-war-warhammer

The title says it all: it's a Total War game set in the Warhammer
fantasy universe. I've always enjoyed the Total War games more in
theory than practice (have they finally added an "auto-fight battle"
mode that actually shows you the combat rather than just a summary
screen? I might give it another look if so), and never much cared for
the non-40K Warhammer franchise (space marines beats knight any day),
so this one is of limited interest to me. But this is considered one
of the better Warhammer games available, so if you enjoy that sort of
thing, it's worth nabbing.

Note that there is also a number of free add-ons you can claim. These
aren't Epic-exclusive freebies; they just a bunch of $0 expansions
offered to anyone no matter where you buy the game. Still, might as
well stock up...
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/total-war-warhammer--grombrindal-white-dwarf
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/total-war-warhammer--isabella-von-carstein
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/total-war-warhammer--jade-wizard
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/total-war-warhammer--bretonnia
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/total-war-warhammer--grey-wizard
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/total-war-warhammer--wurrzag
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/total-war-warhammer--assembly-kit

Game 2: City of Brass
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/city-of-brass
An Arabian Nights-themed first-person action game, and another
duplicate freebie. Cutesy graphics and unexciting combat largely
devoid of character. Not my thing.

Well, anyway, if you don't have these games already, you have a week
before these are gone and replaced by new, equally unimpressive
offerings. The excitement is palpable; can you feel it? ;-)

(side note: Epic client still sucks for buying. No way to open in tabs
or multiple windows, no indicators if a game is owned or on wish list
or in the cart, and back button always takes you to the store page
instead of, you know, back one page. Real quality software)

I have always been a little interested in the WarHammer series. They
seem to get a lot of coverage and cover promotion on PC Gamer.

I think I will add base one listed above.

Thanks Spalls.

Thank you Spalls.

There is also a pinball game for free on the same page above the two
you mentioned called Pinball FX. After you grab it, you can grab
something else for it for free called the 'Starter Customizing Kit'.

The only one I've put sometime into was Medieval:TW and it was certainly
impressive for its time as it took tabletop wargaming to the PC but
actually used the capabilities of a PC for playing a battle instead of
just replicating a tabletop. The problem I found though was once you
started getting in the battles it became apparent that there really
wasn't a lot of depth to them and quite often then best tactic was just
to take all your forces and smash into the enemy. To be far though that
kinda how warfare at the time worked so once you've engaged your troops
that's it.

The other problem I had, and this is a me problem, is that I wasn't that
interested in the strategic layer and also I like my games to do one
thing but do that thing well. It's the same problem I had with XCOM. Am
I playing a tactical combat game or a base management game.

I always preferred the strategic element to these games more, but in
general I agree with the sentiment. I found individually guiding the
troops (whether soldier-by-soldier in XCom or en mass in Total War)
just a bit more micro-management than I enjoyed. Sure, at first the
spectacle of the battle was fun, but that enjoyment never lasted over
the whole game; by the sixth or seventh battle I started finding the
whole thing too repetitive.

Sadly, the strategic elements of the Total War series were always
second-fiddle to the tactical combat, which is why I never stuck
around with the franchise very long and instead migrated back to
'proper' 4X games. As I said, I might have played them longer had the
game resolved the battles automatically but actually played them out
visually instead of just presenting a 'battle results' screen; the
added visual flair of watching the units slam into one another -
without me having to bother with the fiddlesome controls - may have
added enough spectacle to make the limited strategic aspects more
palatable.

You can actually give control to the AI during battles, and then sit
back watch your units slam into the enemy. You may be dispointed at
how badly the AI controls your units though.
