My default graphics file viewer and converter XnView MP is supposed to
support the AVIF format.
https://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/

However, when I try to open an AVIF file I get a "File can't be
loaded!" message.
Any ideas why?
Anyone else here having this problem?

AVIF sample images:
https://soundtrackstv.com/sample-avif-files-download-example-avif-file/

BTW, Mint's Xviewer can load and convert AVIF files.

I don't see 'AVIF' mentioned on the linked page. However
https://avif.io/blog/tutorials/xnview/ indicates it should be supported
as of version 0.96 (released in June of 2020, according to their change
archive).

Doesn't look like it's in the repos.
Which version are you running?

What about the size of the files ?

Are these real AVIF files ?

*******

apt search avifenc

sudo apt install avifenc # hopefully also pulls in libavif

avifenc test.png test.avif

Then, load test.avif into your tool that needs a test.

OT
I need to organize a huge collection of pictures and tried everything I
could find.
NONE of them can do the first thing I need, sorting the pictures by
year. All programs have interesting half baked options, the half baked
part makes them all pretty useless for what I want.
I am afraid I have to install windows and see if there is something
available that I can use.

FWIW I get the "File can't be loaded" message with my XNView MP 1.5.4. I
tried a different avif file at
<https://aomediacodec.github.io/av1-avif/testFiles/Link-U/kimono.mirror-vertical.avif>
and got the same message. No problems opening with Xviewer or Pix.

Kinda small.
I like this one https://libre-software.net/image/avif-test/
It's a bit bigger, but as said, xviewer does it's job.
pix even opens it. I don't use pix but it's installed.

You can "transfer" the EXIF date-taken, to the date stamp
of the file system, using EXIFtool.

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4410557

"How can I make date taken the default for all my pictures?

Exiftool

See copying examples in the documentation.

exiftool '-FileModifyDate<DateTimeOriginal' dir

Use the original date from the meta information to set the
same file's filesystem modification date for all images in a directory.
"

Naturally, you want a firewall between your original photo collection,
and the computer which will be testing this. As otherwise, it
could make a mess.

*******

This is an example of doing it with File Explorer in Windows.

[Picture]

https://i.postimg.cc/htCRrZR8/sort-by-date-taken.gif

Some example steps to make that possible.

1) Click the column header line, click the box next to "Date Taken"
to add a column for it.
2) Set up the federated search Indexer, and index the entire computer.
This populated the inverted index with EXIF metadata, amongst other things.
It took me *two weeks* to tune that. To generate an inverted index
on a computer with 1 million files takes *24 hours*.
3) Now, go back to your File Explorer window, enter the extensions you want
to find on the entire computer, and they will arrive with the Date Taken field.
If you need to sub-range the search results, you should be able to do that,
but I don't know the syntax (it will put up a date-selector when you enter
the correct search language keyword for it).

I hope you can see from this, that the Windows computer has a steep
investment at first, just so you can show someone a picture like that.

If you do <ctrl> A and "select all" then <ctrl> C to "Copy", you can now
pull all those photos from whatever partition(s) the search found them in.
And put them on your USB stick or whatever.

There's a possibility EXIFTool will do this job, before the kettle has
boiled, versus the above Windows description.

Sure, there are a bunch of third-party utilities in Windows, but nobody
will give you an honest appraisal, and you'll be testing them for the
next week or two.

Thanks Paul,
If I cannot find a better solution I take a closer look at it.
There must be a program that has such basic options ready and build in,
I don't think I am the first in the world who made a mess of his
pictures collection.

XnView MP 1.5.4, the current version.

"XnView MP supports more than 500 image formats"
https://www.xnview.com/en/image_formats/

It's not in the repos afaik. XnView MP is freeware for personal use
(closed source). Downloads:
https://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/#downloads

Xviewer is fine for viewing and converting graphics, but XnView MP has
more features and options.

Makes no difference. XnView MP can't load it and keeps me wondering
why it can't handle these files, contrary to the list of supported
file formats. Perhaps only the Linux build has this problem.

If you do "ldd" on the executable, does it list any
sort of "AVIF" library as a dependency ? Normally with
an image application (imagemagick), you expect to see
things like "libjpeg.so", "libpng.so", and so on, a
whole bunch of image formats as libraries.

But, maybe that's just bad advice for the year 2023, the
year of "bodge everything".

"Does FFmpeg currently support AVIF?"

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/73030273/does-ffmpeg-currently-support-avif

"Yes, AVIF muxing support was added on 13th May 2022 to the master branch.
So you need a git build since that date. Or wait for v5.1 which
should be out in a few days." [Gyan]

Now, getting support in libffmpeg would only be part of the story,
because the software still has to recognize the format and pass it
to the FFMPEG library for conversion.

But for the other formats, there are discrete libraries included in the .deb .
And maybe using "ldd" on the main executable, would show what it has
for a library manifest. When we see libffmpeg, we don't really know what
is being used for, because it has a tiny bit of functional overlap with
the other libraries.

Summary:

1) Modern enough version of libffmpeg.so . Libraries like that,
may not be as "capable" as the entire application would be, and
the person building the library, can exclude anything they want
(like say, the ASCII Art library). That's how you go from 90MB to 12MB.

2) Actual call in code, to trigger AVIF handling.

The format support list is here.

Thanks for your efforts.
I'll use Mint's Xview for AVIF files until the XnView MP guy fixes the
problem.

I would say the capability is well down the list, somewhere.

HEIF doesn't work either.

On other platforms, HEIF costs $0.99 for support, and it's
not the money, it's exposing a credit card for such an amount
that makes the idea a non-starter.

That's a licensing fee so you can decode something :-/ Knuckleheads.

If it was your intention to simply view the file, FireFox opens the file
to view. Right click the Download and it opens in FF.

An old problem, never fixed.

"AVIF in reading will be supported with libheif in next version"
Pierre

libheif1 is installed here; useless.

The program is having some kind of problem with
its file identification code (MIME or /etc/magic related).

It's not really possible to tell what "support" it has, if
it is not feeding the file to the right library. The poor JPEG
library is probably tired of attempting to parse every
image format under the sun, by itself :-)

Perhaps that is the solution to the problem - replace the
JPEG library with a bootleg piece of code that does all the
analysis and parsing instead :-)
