I have started getting the message 'Reconnect your drive'
I should mention at this point I have an external HDD which has been
running under Macrium Reflect Free.
I have switched the message off in Control Panel which seems to work for
a while then the message appears again after a few days, perhaps after a
restart?
Is there something I should do beyond stop being paranoid?

Remote possibility, but try reseating both ends of the USB cable to
clean the contacts.

It could be coming from File History.

https://www.tenforums.com/performance-maintenance/70336-how-can-i-stop-windows-10-baloney-pop-up-action-center.html

One other thread, File History seemed to be triggered
by a Macrium Reflect restore (which would affect
file state for a large number of files).

Perhaps anything which makes File History think a single
file has changed "thousands of times", creates a lot of
storage space requirement for File History (so any of the
useless versions can be retrieved).

Based on the fossil record, it's not a USB hard drive issue,
it's some inadvertent interactions between softwares (one
software making work for a second software).

Mm. I could have sworn the remote drive light was on last time I got the
erroe message. Just now it was off and reseating the cable has started
the lamp flashing.
Just got to wait and see now.

I looked at that link by essenbe. I don't have a setting 'Alarms and
Clock' as described, but if I got a reading as described by 'Y' in the
second article, I would not understand it anyhow

Are you using, or have you used, File History ?

You have to set it up, for it to be an issue.
Nothing happens if you have not set it up.

*******

The choices for debug, would be Eventvwr.msc and Procmon.exe .
Event Viewer is a bitch to deal with. Apparently you can
somehow log certain USB events, but if you do, you practically
need a third party log viewer for presentation.

The problem with Procmon for this, is for "dataful" tracing,
like trying to figure out why a backup is breaking, the trace
can end up being a large large number of gigabytes. And the
ability to scroll through the output, or work with it, has been
degrading with the newer versions to the point it becomes
impossible to work with.

That's why I'm limiting myself to asking questions about
your usage pattern.

USB drives which are bus-powered, can be power limited.
The fuse may open, before the rotating drive gets up to speed.
If you use a USB to SATA converter and an SSD drive, those
are pretty close to the power limit for USB2, so really
need all the power USB3 has to offer (5V @ 900mA).
