Hi All,

W10-22H2 Home (I hate the home edition)

I had a customer today with this issue:

Permanently delete confirmation pops up even though disabled in Recycle
Bin properties

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/permanently-delete-confirmation-pops-up-even/e22fbacf-50b7-4c26-ab8f-4d72ffc343bb

Every thing I deleted was permanently deleted, despite the recycle bin
property settings.

The standard stuff did not work:

How To Fix Deleted Files not Showing in Recycle Bin Issue in Windows 10

https://tnakaj.bluejeanblues.net/how-to-fix-deleted-files-not-showing-in-recycle-bin-issue-in-windows-10/

AAAAAHHHH !!!!!

Then it occurred to me to look into the recycle bin itself:
C:\$Recycle.bin

No where to be found. Hmmm. So I recreated to from
cmd-administrator. No joy just yet.

Then I open $Recycle.bin in Windows explorer and dragged
a file into it. It bitched about need admin privileges, so
I gave it to it. And it worked.

And a "Recycle bin" entry popped up in the recycle bin.
And guess what started working again! Even lasted
through a reboot. (No more asking for privileges either.)

Double AAAAAHHHH!!!!

Another "One Off" Windows 10/11 bummer. Bet I
never see another one like this! I have never
seen so many One Offs since Windows 10.

For future reference, there's a structure inside the Recycle Bin.

If you use NFI.exe, you can "see" this.

.\nfi c: > D:\nfi_c_out.txt # 161,794,702 bytes

notepad D:\nfi_c_out.txt

Then you can see the SIDs in there. Your non-admin users
each have a parking spot in the bin, and then it is less likely
a permissions issue will exist.

\$Recycle.Bin
\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-1212121212-121212121-1212121212-1000
\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-18
\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-2323232323-2323232323-232323232-1001
\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-3434343434-3434343434-343434343-1001
\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-4545454545-4545454545-4545454545-1000

Trying to navigate there, is likely to be Access Denied.

Which is the reason for using nfi.exe as administrator, to get there.

Items in the recycle bin "appear in pairs". If you spot an
orphan file in there (not paired), then chances are that
will stay there forever.

I periodically clean out the orphans with Treesize Free.

I have seen that when I am booted off a Fedora USB.
I always wondered that was about. Thank you!
I have cleared out everything in C:\$Recycle.bin with
Fedora before too. Start over fresh.
In this instance Windows would not recreate the
missing C:\$Recycle.bin
