When I control + alt + delete to find what's hanging I often see msedge.exe
running and even though it may not be the offender, why is it running?

I never use it.

How can I kill it once and for all please?

Delete the Windows OS completely or use an old windows OS pre Edge.

Yes, those who really dislike Edge (for whatever unpecified reason)
always have the option of running Linux as their Operating System
rather than Windows.

Hey, I have Linux and Edge. I only use to when I see an article about some feature MS is adding. I like to see what
they did.

I use Edge all the time but it only runs when I want it.

Start Edge, open Settings, turn off run at startup and in background.

A major update of Edge yesterday with lots of totally unnecessary
features.

There's a good list here, and it hints at the
difficulties ahead of you. There is armor plate.

https://woshub.com/uninstall-disable-microsoft-edge/

This command is a traditional Chrome/Chromium method.
The Setup.exe accesses a 150+ megabyte ZIP file next
to the Setup.exe file, and that contains the materials
and methods for removal. Note that Microsoft has modified
the current versions of MSEdge, so the Setup.exe does not
work to do that any more. Apparently, a Setup.exe borrowed
from an old version will work.

Sample:

cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\103.0.1264.37\Installer"

And run the command to remove Microsoft Edge:

setup.exe --uninstall --system-level --verbose-logging --force-uninstall

It is unnecessary to do this, as the webengine is not a
vehicle to pester you. The article seems intent on wedging stuff,
and maybe in the long run, this is for the best (as MS could
only bloat this puppy for nefarious purpose). Because MS have been
such assholes recently, I no longer consider "some conspiracy theory"
to be outside of the norm.

cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeWebView\Application\103.0.1204.37\Installer\

Run the removal command:

setup.exe --uninstall --msedgewebview --system-level --verbose-logging

The GPEDIT at the bottom of that web page, is a flavor of an SRP. But it is still
messy because it throws a toast when triggered. But it is a kind of "better way",
because no matter how many Patch Tuesdays or Windows Upgrades that mess with
your head, an SRP is more likely to persist.

MSEdge is a giant waste of space, because it keeps multiple versions
around. Stuff is sprayed all over the place (the way you would expect).
Macrium is similarly a space hog, and for the same (OS design based) reasons.
Copiea and copies of stuff, out the wazoo.

*******

Todays Patch Tuesday was delightfully destructive.
It rebooted while I was taking a nap. It ruined what
I was working on. Thanks.

Paul

I wonder how I got several of my Win10 PCs to never update automatically.

Never updates, never reboots by itself.

In fact, just last night, on one of them, I was installing some s/w, and afterwards, the
installer says it needs to reboot.

So I go to reboot, and after startin git, I remembered, "damn!! That 'Reboot to Update'
icon was showing in the system tray".

But, it just restarted, and didn't do any updates.

To contrast that, I have a Win10 laptop I was using, that was running PuTTY, to log debug
messages from a network device connected through SSH. After leaving it running
overnight, I come in in the morning to find that the laptop updated, and rebooted, and I had
very little info that it was supposed to capture!!

An option? Yes, however it's not an option that interests me.

I have a much simpler option that works fine for me: don't run Edge
and use Firefox instead.

Normal fpr the most part.
One can, open Edge and disable on startup and also continue running
background processes. Edge can not be uninstalled.

Window includes applications that rely on Edge whether its the default
browser or not.

Something along the lines "i don't use iexplorer". But then MS did
forcer it in earlier Windows versions.
Just wait, until MS does force Edge (and maybe autostart of it) onto
every newer windows version (maybe to tell the majority that it ist
essential to use cloud neworking).
I hope they don't, but looking to other MS products (Office), it
seems, they go ways I dont like.

I can't understand why anyone would use Windows for their personal use.

Why would anyone use an operating system they have no control
over, and have to fight with and complain about constantly?

With a Linux operating system you have complete control, and can install
it on any computer you choose, new or old.

I have Windows and Linux (sort of as a hobby). Then you have Apple's

as in many things, the less you *know* the more your *pay*.

Ubuntu - Software Updates starts 30 seconds after you boot.
- Snaps shoved at you
- Xorg, Wayland, XWayland, PulseAudio, Pipewire,
variable print quality, some printer driver support but not all

To give another example, Alan over in the Ubuntu/Mint groups,
is in the process of "building an older version of SAMBA",
because an *Update* broke his file sharing. Well, no matter
where you live in the ecosystem, you hear that story
on a regular basis. And that's an example of someone, trying
to solve their Linux problem, but heading in the wrong direction.
But it does not change the fact, somebody broke it, and
did not bother to test that authentication works (PAM or
equivalent seems to be broken, because I can reproduce here).
I changed the SAMBA config and got mine working, but then,
I also lowered my security level.

And don't tell me that NFS comes with its own Sparkle Pony
and will somehow be better than SAMBA. We used to hammer that crap,
back in my Unix days. Same old, same old "it's not working
today" thing.

Every OS has time-wasters, they're just "different" time wasters.

Paul

A very bad thing to do, In my opinion. It's just looking for trouble.

You may run into an occasional web page that doesn't work with your
choice of browser, and you need to run Edge to get to it.

Most important, some future Windows update is likely to cause problems
if Edge is missing,

It's much better to do as I do: just change your default browser to
Firefox, or whatever browser you prefer. Having Edge installed but not
being used is a much better choice.

I moved to Linux when Windows 8 came out and have never used Windows
again.

I have tried many different distributions and have settled on MX Linux,
which I think is the best and easiest to just start using without much
effort.

The latest MX Linux has a goofy desktop background, which is easy to
change just by right clicking on the desktop.

The only other thing I didn't like about it was the default position of
the panel was on the left side. By using the tool Mr Tweak, it can be
placed where ever you want it.

When installing you don't need to setup a root password. I don't have
one and have never needed it. I think Xfce is the best.

If you would like to try it, it's here: https://mxlinux.org/

People stopped using Ubuntu when they found out is was spyware. It
dropped from the number one download on Distrowatch to number 8.

I'm sure every distribution has problems, but none I have used have as
many as Windows.

I have been using MX Linux for a few years and have had no problems.

So far I am very happy with removing Edge completely, using Firefox as
browser. Windows and Office Update continues to work (and I disabled
automatic update using Group Policy).

If your work couples tightly with Micro$oft, it's surely better keeping
Edge.

If you're happy, fine. My point is simply that one of these days you
may not be so happy. And since there is almost no real advantage to
removing it completely, in my view it's a bad thing to do. As I said,
I think it's much better to just change the default browser to
whichever you prefer.

Maybe you'll never have the kind of problem I warn against, but
there's a risk that some day you will, and there's no good reason to
run that risk.

I also run Firefox, which I greatly prefer to Edge, Chrome, and the
many others I've tried. But every now and then I run into a web page I
need (usually with a financial institution) that doesn't work with
Firefox, and I'm glad that Edge is still installed.

Today I downloaded Edge and successfully installed it back into my Win
