I ran across this while looking for another computer. I thought you
Windows 10 users might be interested.

It's a four year old model, and it's cheap.

For <$300 and refurbished it's got a lot of updated items. USB C, 1.5TB drive space. Won't run Win 11 I don't think.

With an i5 chip, I don't think it will run Windows 11. The other
specs look decent.

One thing is worrying, though: "This product may not have been
manufacturer certified but has been professionally inspected, tested
and cleaned by Walmart Restored Program Sellers and Suppliers." I
would be a little nervous about the extent to which Walmart would
refurbish a computer.

But there's nothing wrong with refurb units in general. In December
2021 I bought a refurb Optiplex from Discount Electronics
<https://discountelectronics.com/>

i7, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, optical drive, several USB 3.0 ports.
Including a 23" monitor and shipping, with 1-year warranty, it was
just over $600. A friend who is an independent IT guy has bought from
them for years for his clients, and there have been no problems.

The USB C is likely to be hooked to a USB3.0 port.
The storage is a 500GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. When buying
a refurb with an SSD, you don't really know what kind
of mileage it has on it.

And machines like that, they use the Intel graphics (HD530),
rather than coming with a video card. You're playing The SIMS
and not Crysis :-)

But at least it has a quad core processor, and that's what the
current generation of off-lease refurbs brings to the table.
The CPUs don't have MBEC (for Win11), but they're still
perfectly good for Windows 10. That particular machine has
a Skylake processor, so perfect for Windows 7.

fyi..it's not the i5, it' the generation of the processor - 6th gen

I'm not interested in a new computer, and if I were, that wouldn't
meet my needs, but for some people it looks like a great deal. Even if
some refurbished component failed and had to be replaced, the total
cost would still be low.

It comes with a 1-year warranty, but apparently no monitor, keyboard,
and mouse, so those need to be added to the price. Choose cheap ones
($75 monitor, $15 keyboard, and $10 mouse) and the total cost is
$319--still a good deal.

Yeah, these are just drop-ship. Walmart "only makes money"
and does not contribute to the exercise. Those clever
staff you see at the Walmart, did not lay a finger on
that puppy :-)

Many companies "vend" the same stuff, so they're all just
drop-shipping something.

I got lucky here, and discovered my refurb, was actually
refurbed in town. I found out the vendor name, drove there
and paid cash. And the "bazaar" store attempting to make
money off the transaction, didn't get a penny :-) That's why
normally, they would neglect to mention a detail like that.
It meant I got the product in ten minutes, and I didn't have to
wait days for some courier.

My thoughts also. 6th gen. is old! The model may be 4 years but the cpu is
a lot older.

It has a quad core processor, and by refurb standards (considering price),
it's a pretty good deal. The previous generation of refurbs were mostly
dual core ones.

If you're thinking of upgrading it, the SFF doesn't have a very big
power supply in it.

Walmart actually sells a decent wireless mouse, in its Onn brand, for
just under $10. (I assume it's Walmart's brand, because I've never
seen an Onn for sale outside Walmart, but I could be wrong.)

I had gone through a string of Amazon Basics mice, each of which
failed right around the one-year mark. The youngest of my three Onn
mice is 15 months old, and still going strong. (I have three because
they're so cleap it's not worth moving a wireless receiver from one
computer to another, as opposed to having one plugged permanently in
each computer.)

Out of curiosity, I just looked on Amazon.com. They have an ONN Travel
Mouse with Retractable Cord for $30.

And by the way, returning to me previous point about price, I also see
that Amazon has a Verbatim Wired USB Computer Mouse. It's only$6 and
gets 4.5 stars.

Two points about my personal mouse preferences (I may have made both
points here before):

1. I never understand the appeal of a wireless mouse. I actually
prefer a wired mouse for two reasons:

a. No need to replace batteries periodically.
b. I tend to knock a wireless mouse off my desk
and onto the floor, where it breaks.

2. I greatly prefer a vertical mouse to the more traditional
horizontal ones. I find them much more comfortable. I use and like the
Anker Ergonomic Optical USB Wired Vertical Mouse (it comes either
wired or wireless). It's $22 on Amazon.com, more expensive than yours,
but still not a lot of money. If you or anyone else here have never
tried a vertical mouse, I recommend that you at least try one.

I haven't bought refurb computers. I bought a refurb HP printer and a
refurb LG monitor. At least, what the web page of the vendors said
"refurb", but it actually meant that the box was opened, and repackaged
very early. Maybe not even switched on. The shop merely checked that
everything was alright, perhaps did a factory reset.

In this case, I believe the checking was done by both vendors.

I'm happy with both purchases so far.

I use one with a tablet.

This way, it doesn't occupy the single USB-micro port. This tablet must
be used with a mouse, because it fell from the bed, cracked its glass,
and touches do not work.

The battery lasts well over a year. In fact, it came with a package of
two batteries, and it is now using the second.

Actually, I am sensitive to low-level stimuli, such as the drag of a
mouse wire. Using a wireless mouse prevents that distraction.

The carpeted floor is just a plus when I clumsily knock the mouse off
my standing desk.

Good to know about such stores.

Here'ws a nice looking laptop.

https://discountelectronics.com/windows-11-ready-dell-latitude-i5-ssd-13-business-laptop

It offers win11 for $30 addtional.

What about 11 is better than 10?

Are they things I would ever use?

Right now I have desktop and laptop win10 computers and afaik, there's
nothing I can't do, at least that I want to do.

8th gen Kaby Lake processor. 1.6GHz ?

Shockingly, it is on the Windows 11 compatibility list.

Being a Latitude, the machine probably has a TPM (for Secure Boot).

I would stick with Windows 10 on a machine like that. As it is
less likely to receive a mod you don't like, on Patch Tuesday.

And you would not pay $30, since a free upgrade to Win11 would be free.
Receiving a copy of W10, covers you for W10 and W11. You could
even dual-boot if you wanted to, by getting it with W10.

Before Patch Tuesday, my W11 machine had a half-height Taskbar.
After Patch Tuesday, it got a wasteful full-height Taskbar
which I cannot adjust. That's an example of an <cough> improvement.

And if I want to use my webcam, I use it on Windows 7. As my webcam
has been buggered since FrameServe was introduced (cannot switch
to full resolution).

Modern OSes are for rich guys with money to burn. I should
buy a new webcam because <assholes>.

In my mind, the most important thing is that it will continue getting
security updates longer than Windows 10 will.

Windows 10 is already no longer getting feature updates, though what
I've read about the feature updates to Windows 11 doesn't make me
feel like I'm missing anything important.

I also don't think you're missing anything terribly important.

To me, the most important thing is that as new hardware and new
software is released, someone with an older version of Windows may
find that he wants something new that won't work with the Windows
version he has.

That's probably not yet true, but it will start to happen in the
future, You'll want a new printer that doesn't have a driver for 10,
you'll want the latest version of program X, that won't run on 10,
etc.

Also since the upgrade from 10 to 11 is free, there's really no
downside to upgrading if your hardware supports 11.
