Unless the microphone he's trying to use is internally connected to
a different sound chip entirely, which would be weird, everything I
said still applies.

On my system I have several possible sound input sources. A web cam ,
the 'monitor of built in analogue sound system' and so on..

The OP states the mike works under winders, but not Linux - that
suggests the BIOS is not at fault, but linux software is...
